  • One of the best to ever play. People forget about the great ole timers. Not only was he one of the first really elusive guys, he brought receiving and returning ability to go with his amazing play at running back. He would go on to make the Hall of Fame and is defo up there with the best RBs to play the game!

    I saw him in the NFL Championship game between the Bears and Giants in Wrigley, 1963. He was at the end of his HOF career but he still had it. A real gentleman, there are some players today that could learn a lot from him, meaning, how to act off the field !

    He took a pay cut when he left University of Washington and joined the Niners or so it went. Great guy especially with young fans. The Kezar days were the best and he was the best of the best

    A great player. I remember reading Jim Brown's autobiography "Off My Chest"
    He said Hugh could do things as a running back he never could!

    One of the very best breakaway runners of that era. SF had one of the great backfields ever with him, John Henry Johnson and Joe Perry and TIttle at one time.

      garrison 68 all legends and great in their own time! I have individually highlights for them all on my channel and highlights of the backfield as a whole, please check it out if you’re interested

    Tremendous athlete. Breakaway speed. Great moves. Dangerous in the open field. The very definition of elusive. I'm simply amazed when I watch this video.

    Along with Willie Gallimore, Barry Sanders, and Gale Sayers, Hugh is in that top tier of most exciting, breakaway artists. Though not the greatest of NFL's best all-time runners, he most definitely is among the most exciting ever. Top tier of the greatest runners ever is Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Gale Sayers, Walter Payton, and Marion Motley. But McElhenny was as exciting as football gets! He scored on a long run the first time he touched the ball in the NFL, and averaged 8.1 yards per carry in his rookie season.

      There are lots more top tier runners that I would add to your list: O.J., Tony Dorsett, Marcus Allen, Marshall Faulk, and Ladainian Tomlinson, to name a few.

    Not only speed & strength & elusiveness, but look how he uses his downfield blockers, slowing down at times to let them catch up. This is something you don't see much in the modern game because you don't see downfield blocking the way you do in the old films. Maybe the players are just too fast. But it is a big difference I see in the game when watching old films, even up to the 1970's.

    Though I've only seen his films, it's obvious he was one of the most exciting runners who ever played. We don't see his kind any more, the great breakaway back, but I saw Willie Galimore and Gale Sayers and Barry Sanders, and I think these great breakaway men were football's most exciting players. I'd much rather watch Hugh and these others run than just see another pass thrown.

      Mike Whitney me too man I’d love to see some of these old school exciting backs, Shane a lot of the footage is lost or in archives. Maybe one day, if they can get hold of it, the NFL will release some of the old footage and classic games like these

    This guy was 49ers answer to Gayle Sayers/Barry Sanders when it came to RB. Can you imagine Gore, McElhenny, and Craig as RBs on the 49ers legends team? Then, Perry and Johnson as FBs on that team?!

    Teachable moment at 2:03: a ball carrier was not down when tackled until pinned for three seconds and the referee blew his whistle.

    • @jondoe406
      @jondoe406 4 года назад

      It wasn't about being pinned. Old rules were that forward momentum had to be ceased. NFL later went to being downed by contact for safety reasons.

      @@jondoe406 I am old enough to have watched 1950's NFL. The rules changes from one season to another. There were seasons when the 3-second rule was in place.
