    "...Dennis Miller is embarking on a journey of reinvention, one starting with a quick U-turn from his new standup special.
    “Fake News-Real Jokes,” out Tuesday on Amazon, Google, iTunes and other streaming platforms and as an album, will be followed by a self-described “mental exercise” to see what it’s like to ease away from political humor and try something on the lighter side.
    ...
    The simple goal is “just be funny and not talk about the issues as much,” said Miller, who turns 65 on Saturday.
    ...
    Miller, who describes himself as “socially liberal, fiscally conservative,” mused that Hollywood might be eyeing a makeover of its own after the midterm elections...."*

    Dennis Miller is giving up political comedy? I thought Dennis completely gave up on being funny back in the late '80's/early '90's. And even before then, he really didn't have anything funny, it was all in his little cocky, pseudo-intellectual delivery. Dana Carvey imitating Dennis Miller was funnier than anything Dennis Miller ever said or did in the way of comedy.

    "I'm socially liberal but fiscally conservative" - thank you for mocking this silly expression. I've heard this bullshit repeated by many seemingly well-meaning people over the years, typically as an excuse for voting for Republican politicians (or else Libertarian i.e. Republicans pretending to be different) who are neither of these things. None of the people repeating this have ever been able to explain to me how the politicians they are voting for are, despite their claims, "fiscally conservative" (because they sure as hell aren't socially liberal). Unless by "fiscally conservative" they mean that they run up the deficit by spending money on tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy and on the military industrial complex, instead of on things that could actually benefit everyone else like health care, education, infrastructure, clean energy, gun control, etc., etc. Oh but they will try to take away your Social Security and Medicare after they've passed as many tax cuts as possible and ballooned the deficit, I guess that makes them fiscally conservative lol. And of course those same politicians regularly violate political norms in their attempts to take away rights that you would think someone claiming to be "socially liberal" would care about more than another tax break for the 1%.
    The reality is, there is no such thing as a "socially liberal but fiscally conservative" politician anymore, if indeed there ever was. It's an oxymoron, that person doesn't exist. And the first part of that trope is nothing more than a fig leaf.

    • @mattpliska
      @mattpliska 5 лет назад

      U attempt to say there is no such thing as a socially liberal but fiscal conservative by pointing out that the Republican party isnt. Your falling into a micro vs macro trap. U made a statement that no one could possibly hold these views because they arent visible in mainstream politics is a ridiculous oversimplification. Obviously people with such views exist, as does every imaginable ideological makeup. I've met plenty of people with such beliefs. They oppose the Pentagon's budget and tax cuts that are not accompanied by spending cuts and they never opposed gay marriage or abortion. There arent many politicians like that but people with such beliefs exist.

    • @mattpliska
      @mattpliska 5 лет назад

      @@toddvanfleet8576 they are mutually exclusive what a ridiculous statement. They are probably negatively correlated but they can be present in the same person. Ideologically people who are fiscal conservatives and social liberals exist, I should know I am one. Policy wise most republicans are unable to cur spending for fears of popular resentment but instead pay for their votes by tax cuts, democrats dont raise taxes for fear of popular resentment but instead pay for their votes by programs and other spending. Neither of these are fiscally conservative outcomes, however a fiscally conservative republican could be driven to such outcomes for fear of self-survival as a politician in which spending cuts are not practicable

    I know they've mentioned him, but i wish they would have segments destroying Nick DiPaolo (he used to be occasionally funny, but is one of the most bitter, and misguidedly angry comics of his generation. He attributes all of the the country's woes to political correctness, woke culture and levels his venomous tongue at such topics (his most recent album cover was him giving the finger to a group of BLM protesters (when he found out one of the protesters was shoot and killed by a cop he buckled and changed the pic). If these culture wars were substantial or real in the way he imagines, his comedy might have some relevance. But seeing as they are largely the constructions of embittered, frightened white men, it falls flat. And it just comes across egregiously bigoted. credit goes to Miller for seeing the opening for a right -wing comedian-------he was second rate before he became political but as a "conservative" comedian was one of the best of the two or three in that category--------obviously I'm referring to the "intentional" comedians, not Greene, Gosar, Gaetz, Dear Leader, Graham, Gomer, Rubio, Cruz etc------now, those guys are really funny!

    I was like "who's that unfunny cockhole?", when I watched Joe Dirt for the first time. That's how Dennis and I met.

      J Engelmann I saw him in The Net with Sandra Bullock. He was pretty good. Then again, he didn’t have any comedic lines in his script.

    Can the guy just give up comedy in general? The guy can't get out of making references that only my dad gets.

    Seeing Miller's show will literally be like travelling back in time to a comedy club in the late 1980's.
