Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
When the people listen to you, don't you know it means a lot?
Because you've got to work so hard for everything you've got
Can't rest on your laurels now - not when you've got none
You'll find yourself in the gutter, right back where you came from
[Verse 2]
Someone told me being in the know is the main thing
We all need the security that belonging brings
Can't stand on your own in these times against all the odds
You all just fall behind like all the other sods
[Chorus]
You slap our backs and pretend you knew about
All the things that we were gonna do
What you're gonna do?
What you're gonna do when it's over
[Verse 4]
You're all on your own now - don't you think that it's a shame
But you're the only one responsible to take the blame
So what you're gonna do when the novelty is gone?
Yeah, what you're gonna do when the novelty is gone?
[Chorus]
You slap our backs and pretend you knew about
All the things that we were gonna do
What you're gonna do?
What you're gonna do when it's over?

Everything about this song is pure perfection. Ask yourself, What ya gonna do when the Novelty has gone.
Poetry of those who do not quite fit into this world. How refreshing for those who struggle functionally in it
I heard this the first time in my brother’s attic room on a small record player. Sometime in 1979. Never had heard anything like it. I was mesmerised.
i dont think this was released til much later... its not on unknown pleasures, it was added later a a live version. came on the single with atmosphere

Me too it blew my mind
Very similar introduction to Joy Division. My brother was into them in the early eighties he had one of those little tape decks lol. Compared to todays sound systems it must have sounded tinny as f*ck but back then to us it sounded great
He could have heard it on the B side to Transmission.
The guitar from 3:10 to 3:20 is one of best things in all of Joy Division and that is no small thing.
I feel sorry for those who never discovered this gem of a song.
BIT Arrogant that!
I am 58 in mid March, and an 'original 1977 pUnK rOcKeR ! I Bought the 7" single of Transmission soon after it's release ( I was still at school, so money was tight) I am still into this band so much to this day and have learnt their tunes on guitar!
I am also born and bred in Manchester, but none of these points make me better qualified to comment on this band or any other, be they from Manchester or any other GREAT BRITISH City or town! It is a Gem of a song, I discovered it in 1979, when it was being demoed on 'THE JOHN PEEL SHOW' in 1979! Music is a journey and so it should be! Cheers and Love ! dx
It's a matter of worthiness...songs like this discorver will eventually discover you if you're worthy
@@diegoragone2191guess I'm worthy @____@ cause just discovered this awesome song
one of their lesser known songs but an absolute banger, you could argue the same for 80% of their music. A deeply underappreciated band in many regards.
Funny enough this is actually my first time listening to this song from JD and damm it's a good one!
Same!
A mi me paso lo mismo!
i dont mean to be so off topic but does someone know a method to get back into an instagram account..?
I stupidly lost my password. I appreciate any tips you can give me!
Immortal song 🎶
It's my favorite song by them, the very first JD song I played when I joined a band in the '80s. I love the guitar parts, so much fun to rock out on stage.

This is one of the best Joy Division songs there is....and a B side.....great music and the lyrics are brutally honest...spot on....
The absolute best song ever written by Joy division. Bass is fantastic and lyrics are heartfelt. Not to mention bernards guitar and fantastic percussion of Stephen Morris, best song ever written

This one of my favorite songs. It is driving and has a good delivery.
I first heard this on 99.1 with Weasel as D-J, when it was released.
Tremendous, non stoppable delivery.
I have loved this song since I first heard it in late 1979. I was very ill at the time - still struggling with it ! - but this band have always helped.
I could binge listen to some of joy divisions’s music foreverrrr🤟🤟
Love and miss this band soo much.

It says here that this was taken from their first studio album - not quite true,it's taken of course from "Transmission" as the B-side.
Also says it was released on 7th October 1979. When it was actually the 15th of June I think.
Was never on a studio album. Just B side of Transmission, first JD factory records single. Middle of 1979, I think. I heard it late 1979. Friend of big brother had the 7”.
@@hvhvgitaar yep, absolutely true, but I think they're just uploading lyric videos to all of Joy Divisions output, which is great, and a big improvement on those reimagined videos.
Máster piece! Joy División forever
I’d never heard of them in USA until watching Normal People. Since then I’ve heard them mentioned repeatedly. So many good artists’ favorite band. They were terrific. So sad about the singer’s suicide.

Ditto. Except I'm 53 and teaching my southpaw wife to play it on her new left-hand bass! Been riffing away on this on me bass since 1983!

Cant get this out of my head during a comedown anhedonia.
I hear hints of many metal bands in it, ac dc, rob halford, accept, even iron maiden, and others, a little bit of early 80's metal sound, maybe they were inspired by joy division or this was late 70's general metal beginnings among many.

Funny how I never listened to this when it was the B side due to the intro. It always sounded a bit Hollies Long Cool Woman … particularly the guitar. (Go take a listen). But I’ve found myself listening to JD again a lot after 42 years, including 88’s Substance. Sheeet… this is easily one of their best.

*Surreal Justice*
Trust the world and you shall reap its rewards.
Reality is a modern art movement.
Speak honestly and people will love you for it.
The vast truth is more twisted, misaligned, gnarled, and formless.
Creativity breaks the rules then rearranges them.
Integrity in engineering sells products not advertising.

*The Puzzle of Gendering*
The gendering of male and female aspects into nature and man-made concepts is a big tradition that has seeped right into the languages of mankind. The puzzle of gendering, however, is not as simple as it appears and not always related to social constructs but to Creation or evolution. This is because, regardless of whether one believes in Creation of God or that of a Darwinian report, the aspects of male and female were not split apart evenly in either Creation or cell division or the spirit. This is what imparts the physical attraction of male and female. The major enduring question is to find which aspects were "switched at birth" so to speak that impart this attraction and confuse the simple gendering process. A female is rarely destructive or violent. That is a good place to begin as to which male processes are actually feminine.

*The Gulper’s Die* “Faces in the Devil Grass Fires”
Question:
You have a long stretch of desert to cross and only a gallon of water. You know that if you sip a little every day you can make it across and live to tell about it. Do you sip it every day, or splurge and take gulps knowing you’ll probably die? Be honest, now. Did you gulp? Did you forget to measure at the beginning?
Sip or die, Roland. Sip or die. 😮
The Prince of Wealth and The Fool Who is Blind, but not for you…
One for sip. One for die. One for sip. One for die…
*The Definitive Bully* "Crutches"
Bullying is really a simple definition that people tend to inflate. It is merely when one person uses another as a sort of permanent crutch. This can get especially annoying because of the telepathic interconnectedness in the mind's communication. Bullies tend to have more sexual activity because people tend to avoid authority and the limelight so they can sneak away with each other.
Its over....
*The ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) on Shop Culture* 1902 "Education in the Machine Shops"
"Give me a place to stand, and I will move the Earth." -Archimedes
"If the alchemical poeticism be allowed, even matter, if properly tortured, slain, and resurrected, contains the innate potentiality of revealing the Hermetic mercury of eternal being. With the atomic accelerator at their disposal, modern physicists, indeed, have the capability to change lead into gold." -The Pythagorean Sourcebook and Library
"Great party, isn't it?" -Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining"
-Oberlin Smith
J.D. didn't have one song regular or bad, not the same can be said of New Order
One of their best songs. The solo reminds me of early Oasis. I wonder if Noel Gallagher was directly inspired by this. I know he was a fan.

*The Secret Key to Vampirism* “Interview With An Empty Skull”
The actual truth about real living vampires, despite all rumors and stories, is that they are just airheads with the key to society. Society and its individuals grow slowly more complex over time. The vampires wait for you to get a complex then they open their umbrellas and own you by its simple similes. The mirror of the self will automatically see another as similar or as complex, however vampires remain simple and can also be extremely sharp. This is why witches hate vampires. The witch is complexity. Still one cannot tell them apart. If a vampire family sees you get a complex they’ll probably destroy you. Most of the world is about giving you a complex. This is how they grow so powerful. A vampire bite doesn’t give you a complex it takes it away. The sunlight becomes naturally brighter over time.
Be warned.

*A Competitive Genesis of the Mysteries*
At the end of all knowledge lies the place nobody like to go to. It is the end that justified the beginning. It completes the circle in a recurring idiocy. It is the artistic drop-off point, supposedly so intelligent that it has become irrelevant is a state of mind as warped as it inception. Here it is, the end of all knowledge and ambition as twisted as a Lovecraftian portal. There are two immortals. There are those who complete the way of knowledge and those who never attempt it.
"Herein, lie all the mysteries, but be warned, for they are threefold!"
"As above, so below." -Thoth
1. The end justifies the means. The means justify themselves. These are the two to legal extremes.
2. Two for the makers, one for the fools. Here lies the birth of math and economics.
3. The more you know, the less you show. This especially concerns those who dream.
4. Help to keep the mysteries, for those under them bring treasures.
5. I summon thee for wine, and from wine you are summoned. This concerns the true birth of Jesus.
6. A screen is a screen, no matter how high or how low. A screen is a calling. It screens out those below. As high as the stars or under the dirt, a screen is complexity that those under shall work. This concerns ambition and drive in men.
7. A man who sees only a mirror sees only himself in others. Instead, make the mirror in all its forms. The you will see the other, though owning a man will sometimes send him to the healers, especially when you look at him and he doesn't notice.
8. Females are born of Lilith. They only generate to the lesser.
9. A god is made of paper and reeds. It is here by which they summon the spirits.
10. "As above, so below" has to do with the digestion of information which requires relaxed humility. Christianity tried to monopolize it through humility to the Bible, thus imparting torture to millions.
-Francis Blake
