Navajo Nation representative here. Been a fan before people even knew you guys. Just wanted to let you know, I might cry before I play the video. Lol. Thank you, Avette Brothers. Im tired of ill-driven divisions. Some of my Natives have turned racist against our other Brown, White, Black Sisters and Brothers. I think that's BS. Hope they find your music and pray to a "God" they believe in, to remember we are all in this together.
Thank YOU for such a tolerant, and beautiful, statement. I am three-fourths Scottish, and 12-13% each of Blackfeet and African-American.
Division has no place in our country, our world... peace will only come through LOVE, respect and tolerance! ❤️
@@jipsigal Thanks 😊. Oh, I wish I had the money to visit Scotland?! 😭 Such a beautiful country. Fun Fact: Navajo's are CRAZY about sheep and mutton. 🙃
I agree %100. We are all brothers, one country. I love people on the content of their character, not skin color. And yes I voted for Trump.
@@mjmrik Thats cool man. Don't matter to me. Keep staying original. Don't buckle the knee for anyone. I voted Democrat. I'm an Anarchist. I hate politicians. I just hate Democrats less. Lmfao
What a beautiful and heartfelt statement. Thank you
Woodie Guthrie wrote this song a response to counter Irving Berlin's popular song at the time "God Bless America" which he decried as a song that embraced America for the individual, rather than one nation for all. Woodie was condemned in his time, along with others like Pete Seeger, for being a communist/socialist. Label him what you will, but this song is written for the people, and may be the greatest song ever written to embrace what we truly should strive for as Americans. This should be our national anthem.
Obamas post inauguration day, there was an outdoor morning celebration where Seeger, Bruce Springsteen, and another, performed this song. Pete of course had his banjo. Woody Guthrie, the whole group of guys, are timeless.
@@professormancaptain4210 The third guy was Pete's grandson, Tao, who inherited his grandfather's clear tenor and musical talent.

@Winston Mosquehill Nothing wrong with that - land should not be private, it belongs to you and me...
So glad y'all did the 4th verse. I don't think enough people use that one. It was beautiful 😭
What's the 4th verse
@@lovegod3218 "There was a big high wall then, that tried to stop me...". This song is from Woody Guthrie. The Avett Brothers are covering it. 🙂
@@caseylewis8768 Thank you I did not know that very appreciated
@@lovegod3218 No problem. Woody Guthrie was the original. But Bob Dylan was the only person to ever out do his idol. Trust me, listen to Bob Dylan. The song that really opened my eyes, and He was the first rapper, was the song "It's Alright Ma(I'm Only Bleeding)". Give that a spin, friend.
@@caseylewis8768 everyone should listen to ol' Bobby D. Especially in the current era of America. The illegitimate king of protest music.
Im an old timer who also plays the banjo and guitar. I've sung this song for years and never tire of it. Love your singing of this classic and the amazing video with it. Keep healing our nation!!! Music has power.
Big Love from the Sunny mountains of Boulder Colorado!!
"In the squares of the city, in the shadow of the steeple
Near the relief office I see my people
And some are grumblin' and all are wonderin'
If this land's still made for you and me"
One of the most powerful and inspiring songs in American folk music.
the fact that the Avett Brothers openly and directly omitted this particular verse is EXACTLY why i hate this version of this tune. this verse is everything. often i sing it a bit different. i sing "some are hungry, and some are wondering: IS this land still made for you and me?" the great American experiment boiled down into not just the moral rage that while some have all, other can't even get a bite to eat. where we, those who till the soil, those who harvest the air and water to help charge our smart phones, those who stand in solidarity with unions, those who were sent to prison for minor drug possession before they could even learn how to do their own taxes, those who learn the choreography of dance trends on tiktok to stave off suicidal idealization, those who still believe that rock n roll can save somebody's soul, we the children of this nation who have not: we don't even know if this place was REALLY made for us. the man who wrote those words all that mess of years ago literally could not imagine an iphone, or Dungeons & Dragons, or Stephen King's twitter feed....but those words he wrote are still so relevant. the Avett Brothers distinctly and specifically omitted them. maybe that's the disgustingly nationalistic Star Spangled Banner is STILL the official national anthem. maybe that's why Colin Kaepernick had to switch careers. then again, maybe asking if this country was even all that great to begin with is the very reason why this song isn't the national anthem and maybe never will be.
In today's flammable society, it is brave to put this song out there. I love it. I know it's history and understand the lyrics. I also believe that America is a fluid nation and what is necessary today may not be appropriate tomorrow. We will never be 💯 united on most issues. We can and should always do better, but sometimes it seems we take huge steps backwards. Love to all!
I just woke up to work, it's 2 A.M and I was gifted with a new song to start my day, I'm sure it's going to be good.
Edit: Cheers from Brazil, Rio de Janeiro to The Avett Brothers and all fans .
Aqueles sao bom de mais. My daughter and I saw them live on a beautiful summer night in Idaho last summer. Cheers to better days and more Avett Bros.

Random, but really cool!

To the Avett Brothers, to Woody, and to all like minded people... thank you for being a part of the machine that kills fascists
The communist and socialist implications of this song have a fascist nature
@@AtmDriverAtmDriver Fascism is the opposite of socialism. Its extreme Nationalism.
I disagree. Fascism is the opposite of democracy. Socialism is a step in the direction of fascism because it gives the state more control and more power
@@AtmDriverAtmDriver The key features of fascism are tyranny and dictatorship fueled by nationalism, neither of which are inherent in a socialist society.
Per Webster's dictionary:
Fascism - 1: a political philosophy, movement, or regime (such as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition
2: a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control
@@AtmDriverAtmDriver assumption is the killer of truth
Beautiful! The American spirit is still alive folks, you just don't see it mainstreamed. Love from Oklahoma.
There’s a very clear and straightforward history behind this song. It’s not an ambiguous nod to America’s individualistic identity, it’s a politically charged anthem.
The Avett Brothers have a library of music about vulnerability and self-acceptance for the sake of self-improvement. Their catalogue is, without ambiguity, about trying to be better tomorrow than we are today. This is not a political debate, this is an existential stake in the ground.
If you’re a fan of Avett Brothers music and think the statement “tomorrow will be better than today” is a veiled threat then you’re missing the point of their music and dancing to the beat of a false drum.
100% well said
Well put
My man.
The Communists genocided more than Europeans ever killed natives by a factor of 100. So the only way you think this song's political history represents tomorrow being better than today is if you are a sociopath.
Guthrie was an avowed and unapologetic supporter of one of the most horrific men in human history, a man who killed more than even Hitler. Please learn about what type of person you are complimenting before you insult so many victims again.
I have fond memories of listening to this song with my grandpa on his record player. Thanks for your rendition
Literally got goosebumps. Took an oldie and made it your very own. Love you both so much. We all need this song now more than ever.
Goosebumps all over right now!

I love your country and it's people, and watching from here this last 18 months while the country suffer nearly it's greatest schism in over 150 years has been heartbreaking.
Thank you Scott and Seth, this has been a salve for the heart, love your work.

Ikr it honestly makes me wanna cry because of what our nation has become
Woodie Guthrie lives again, I’ve sang this since being a toddler in the 50’s thank you Carolina boys for your kind hearts for to know you are loved is a grace from GOD
I love Woody Guthrie and I love The Avett Brothers. Your soft voices sound so lovely doing this.
Absolutely great. I'm crying tears of joy listening to it this July Fourth weekend. Thank you so much.
Beautiful version of beautiful song !
I remember seeing the Avett Brothers at Red Rocks in CO. What a gorgeous place and evening! They are a blessing and honestly this brought me to tears. I don't like either party and the process is such a dirty business, but at the end of the day we are trying. Don't give up on the USA yet!
Great rendition of an old song. Canada has our own version. From Bonavista to Vancouver Island, from the Arctic Circle to the Great Lake Waters....thank you Scott and Seth!
I remember learning the Canadian version back in the second grade (in Alberta) and honestly didn’t know there was an American version until many years later
I didn't know this, and this is fantastic
anyone else stress watching this over the elections? grateful for these boys always and forever.
Thank y'all for including the last verse. Woody Guthrie's message would have been missed without it.
This song was a beacon of hope when it was originally cut and it could very well be a rallying cry in these trying times when the world at large is looking at a unifying leadership.
The Avett Brothers, through their extensive library of songs, have captured the sentiment and mood of a great nation and citizens from all over in their honest-to-goodness lyrics and their music holds up a mirror to what we are hoping for and everyone hums in agreement. The Avett Brothers are those rare torchbearers of fellowship, and if popular votes are all that matter in the halls of democracy then the millions of views and likes are a testament that the people have made a universal choice that cuts across political leanings. 🤟 ✌️
On Nov 7th, 2020, this song is the most fitting of all for this moment. Thanks much!

Perfect song. Perfect performance. Perfect video. Perfect timing. 👍✨❤️🇺🇸
Such a wonderful message to be spreading. What ever happened to humanity? This country used to be a place for everyone to live in peace, freedom, and kindness.
Very moving rendition and photography. I learned this song 40 years ago in elementary school. It has more meaning now as our country is so divided.
Beautiful! ❤
I sure do love this country. Thank you. Dallas, TX here.
From Mexico to the New York Island! Pick that banjo o yeah!
Real grass roots version...nicely done.
This should be our new national anthem, enough said.
In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people,
By the relief office I seen my people;
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking
Is this land made for you and me?
When you name a perfect country with no poor and no adversity you let me know. I'd like to know.
I wish they would have included this verse
@@XiongGou OK? It's just the next verse to the song, man, dunno what you're on about
@@XiongGou I think it's more of a drive to be better. You are correct in that no nation is perfect, however that shouldn't keep us from pushing towards that goal.
@@XiongGou When I hear these lyrics/verse, I think of all the Hmong people in the 70's and all the lost Hmong men that committed suicide.
Beautifully done, as always ❤️ thanks for always being a shining light in a sometimes dark world
I love that you included the fourth verse along with the visual representation of the divide in this country, I feel Woody would have enjoyed that.
Woody was a communist, so no doubt he would have loved it.
A great cover, and a really excellent music video.
It is almost creepy how much y’all’s kids embody each of you ✨♥️✨
Thank you 🙏 so much for your beautiful rendition of this beautiful, wonderful, amazing song
Nobody living can ever stop me,
As I go walking that freedom highway;
Nobody living can ever make me turn back
This land was made for you and me.
Maybe in the next 4 years we can start living out this credo
What a glorious gift to wake up to! Thank you, Scott and Seth!!! So nostalgic...made me think of my Daddy, who loved Woody Guthrie. This song is ingrained in my being because he used to sing it so much!!
Great song here. I’m hoping you read this comment and are greatly encouraged by it. Don’t know which rock I’ve had my head under but I just recently heard “No Hard Feelings” for the first time. I’m gob smacked by it. Shared it with good friends today and they forwarded it to their daughter Stephanie. Stephanie’s best friend since high school, Holly, took her life last week. Should be our national anthem.
Ironically Woody ripped this song from When The World's On Fire by The Carter Family.
@@davidmarple4422 The Carter Family recording is of a hymn. Also, he used the melody from the hymn for part of the lines, but not the entirety. "Ripped off" gives a very unfair connotation. First, as I already noted, both he and The Carter Family are borrowing from the same hymn. Secondly this happens ALL THE TIME in folk music. It's not looked at as "ripping off" in the least. It is part of the "we're all in this together" spirit that is part of folk music culture. Pieces of melodies, lines, etc. are borrowed all the time. Bob Dylan did this all the time.
Have not heard this since I was a child! My father always sang this. I got to learn this and cover it. Thanks for sharing guys!!
Thank you for the inspiration
Adore these gentlemen 🥺⚘
Many thanks from Arkansas.
Wow!!! Thanks so much for this!
Man, if only that were the national anthem.
That needs to go viral, somehow.
Can I ask what's wrong with our current national anthem?
@@XiongGou This one feels more upbeat and inclusive. More people-focused, if you know what I mean. And easier to sing! 😊
@@XiongGou well, if we are from the same country, our national anthem is a battle poem about a battle being witnessed by an unaffected aristocratic, and is set to (plagiarizes/samples) and older, long written BRITISH song with no rhythm, stole its tune from another song, and let’s be real: the only person with anything to do with this thread who could sing it is Seth. It has a range of 19 semitones. Go belt it out for love of country. I bet your voice cracks, and it ain’t because of emotion. What’s RIGHT about out current one? What makes it special?
Just my opinion, but the star spangled banner sucks. It's just not a good song, I hate having to listen to it before events. I think it works as a poem, the was FS Key originally intended it before it was set to the tune of a British folk song. Then there's Keys' complicated relationship with slavery....
Got damn hippies 😂😂😂 great cover guys!! Love it.
I love when you have heard for so many years and you can play it and it just makes you/me ugly cry!! And you did the whole entire song and it was so beautiful, and made me smile and cry at the same time. I love watching you guys, and appreciate you musically and as humans!! This was awesome sauce:)
