I love you guys so much I gotta agree with the safety concerns others have expressed. Paul, people are more likely to fall the older they get. You're no spring chicken anymore, pal. Don't take those chances. Put up side rails and even wear a safety belt if you can. I've had several friends fall. Some suffered serious injury that he's still paying for. Another dear friend fell twice and the 2nd fall took his life. You're worth more than that. Waste a little time and be safe even if it's inconvenient.

Just be careful with those heights! My dad fell from over 20 feet this last September and was airlifted with 7 broken ribs, fractured back and collapsed lungs (among other smaller injuries). He had been painting on ladders for over 30 years and never fell…until he did. He is doing well considering but he could have easily been ☠️

Another great video but I am concerned about some things and surprised how some people have voiced their opinions on here. I am a semi retired commercial painter that have worked on all types of structures. I have been following you guys for a long time. The main concern, as others have voiced, is over your scaffolding set up and no railings. One respectful tip when you’re going to spray outdoors is to start early before the winds pick up. Your choice of paint is great. SW Emerald is an excellent paint. As far as the color that is always a very personal choice. I can’t believe someone commented on the color you picked. One other tip in the very high traffic areas you may want to use a primer, like downstairs door frames and maybe around where you have a water spigot. I know the manufacturers say one thing but as you guys well know by experience that they are not always right in all instances. Otherwise I love you guys videos I stop whatever I am doing to watch your videos and try to learn from you or your guests. Keep up the great work and I’ll be waiting for your next video. 😊

Retired painting contracto with over 40 years here: Some comments, I would not be spraying with all the wind you had . I prefer to brush and roll the facias, with 2 coats, gives a better solid paint application than 2 light spray coats and you don't need a bunch of guys holding spray shields and plastic , and you can save a bunch of money on blue tape and time putting it on . Hanging your cutting brush on the side of the bucket in warm/hot weather will result in your bristles covered with dried out paint in a short time, requiring you to clean the brush with a wire brush as you move along the job . I would keep the brush in the paint . Very important, do not bend your wrist when spraying, keep spray gun perpendicular to the work surface , and you will have less overspray if the gun was a little closer to the work . Last suggestion, on the window trim, I would have caulked first and then painted all the trim, that way you see one exact color and sheen instead of one color of caulk and one color of trim color .
I know you guys aren't pro painters but the job still turned out nicely .

As a painter who sprays the changes I would have made are: Use paper masking on the metal roof fascia and have my assistant use a 3 inch wiz roller to quickly role it smooth behind me, once I'm done that strip, and catch any drips or misses made because of the wind. It will take the assistant less that a minute to role it even where it needs it. You want to have an assistant near by to catch any over spray and move step ladders out of the way. Oh yes wear cloves and a long sleeve shirt. have back up glasses ready as well. That is also the assistants responsibility. Also a 3 foot extension or even the 12 inch (?) extension arm would have helped at the peak. I thought the same as you with the paint brush thing, keep it in the paint and or throw a wet rag over the bucket when you put it down. Besides that they made a good job. Definitely should have taped that plastic down. that was a mistake and left the windows covered as well. I know they wanted to see it finished. Paint all one colour then change your paint colour. Over all his spray technique isn't to bad. Practice practice practice.

@@drewcama2488 Assuming that you're just a normal person with no contacts in professional contracting or painting and you want the exterior of your house painted, you're either gonna end up with exactly shoddy the job that he described or pay much more than 5 thousand dollars to a large company or, if you're lucky, a combination of both. All jobs are about speed and money to any contractor I've ever met. They do not care about the finished product or if they do it doesn't come across in their work. Now, I'm sure there are some good ones out there, but like I said, if you don't know the business intimately you have no way of finding out which ones are the good ones. I wish more contractors made youtube channels for this reason so you could actually see what kind of work they do. I'd hire StudPack to do just about anything and pay them whatever they said it would cost because you can see the body of Paul's work. Even when he makes a mistake it either doesn't affect anything or he goes back and fixes it. From the perspective of this average homeowner - the average contractor is not worth their weight.

    • @ILruffian
      @ILruffian 2 месяца назад +3

The Emerald interior is great as well. I like it better than Benjamin Moore Aura. If you start with a smooth wall (e.g. skim coated) and you control the environmental conditions, in the room to slow drying, you can roll it with a microfiber roller and the result is a look that is damn close to an airless spray finish. Again, you have to start with smooth walls to begin with. If a putzy mothafucka previously rolled the place with a 3/4" inch roller, any paint is going to look like trash unless you skim coat the walls.
I still use Ben More Scuff-X for interior trim. But Emerald matte is a winner on drywall indoors.

We get a great deal on that so I've been trying it out but I haven't experienced long term results yet. I know they've got gallery now, trying to decide what I'll use on my kitchen coming up.. the urethane does take awhile to off gas though which is tough when you keep places sealed when it's cold.@@ILruffian

@@scyarch1136I like Emerald over Aura only due to my specific quirk of absolutely hating stipple. Even with extender and microfiber roller sleeve, I just cannot get Aura to lay down as smooth. That said, the new reformulation of Aura (2022) made it a lot better to work with. Coverage is nuts, even in something like Chantilly Lace.
I wouldn't go near Emerald or any other paint for cabinets. Slow drying and not as tough. Those should be 1K or 2K poly. I tried SW Gallery Series. Have not gotten it to work out yet. I keep getting pinholes (similar to orange peel, but not the same thing). Although I'm probably going to give it one more try, the real answer is likely going to be Centurion or Envirolak. I hear exceptionally good things about the latter. Only problem is sourcing it. All of these 2K polys are near impossible to get.

You can paint cabinets with super high end coatings using that Graco x7. I used a graco x5 to do built ins in my dining room and office using the x5 with a tritech 370 fine finish gun and gold 310 and 308 tritech fine finish tips. I used renner 765 1k for my projects since they are low traffic, but for a kitchen or bathroom I would use renner 688 2k topcoat and renner 651 2k primer. Elite fine finish is in Texas. The guy that runs it is Luis I think who used to be inside sales I think at Surfprep but he knows his stuff. High end finishing is usually $200-230 per linear foot so you could save some dough by diy’ing if you had the desire. It’s not rocket science but definitely takes some planning and practice. I’m a doctor but build cabinets and do high end finishing for fun. I took a class from Dennis Rodrigues (midway interiors on RUclips) and Eric reason (also excellent RUclips resource). These two dudes are at the cutting edge for cabinet finishing with the state of the art wood coatings. I took notes from them and became pretty good friends with Dennis who always helps me out with random questions I have. Good luck.

Your shield, cover with masking paper then it never gets all over the actual shield and can be reused multiple jobs. Second, get a smaller tip…I like fine finish even outside!! Less overspray.
I like to start at the bottom of the ship lap and work my way up. You don’t have to start at the bottom of the building but the bottom of a section of boards…say ten board s at a time, I’ll start at the bottom and go up, making sure I’m hitting the bottom edge with each pass as I progress upwards.
Mini roller is your friend.i use those 4 inch that go on wire frame all the time. They allow you to paint inside corners, are easy to control where the paint is going and lay off a beautiful finish.
Microfiber if you’re really wanting perfect.

The actual best part was not having to mask the roof line, and the gutters painted so good with an egg shell texture, that I had to wipe my eye with a tissue. I got the hand held Graco, because I figured if I didn't burn it out on the first house I could use it on my house next year, and I need to do ceilings. I used 5 gallons on a 2500sqft home, so I should be good for 3-4 more houses before it needs a rebuild.
Props on your garage/house. It looks great. Sherwin Williams lasts a freeking long time.

Hey guys just a tip from a painter, I like to spray exteriors with a LP Graco tip, the black ones specially the the bigger sizes create a lot of overspray. The green LP tips require much less pressure thus creating much less overspray. I use LP 415 for interior walls, LP417 for exterior walls, FFLP310 for doors and a FFLP308 for cabinets. I only use bigger spray tips on interior projects where you can mask everything, not worry about over spray and just spray like a mad man. For the LP and FFLP you need the blue tip guard, they will not fit on the orange one.

The bucket works fine but I am a fan of coffee cans as they have a nice handle you can hold and they come with a lid to seal the paint between coats. Nice color pick.

Neither are as good as using a gallon paint can. I wash out my cans and re-use them, or you can buy empties at the store. They are more compact than that plastic bucket, but the real deal maker is they have the built in drip edge - which catches excess and allows it to stay in the groove and not drip down the side of the plastic bucket.

Get some HandyPails before painting the house. They have an adjustable hand strap, a magnet to hold your brush, are easy to clean, and come in different sizes. I use one at my job and it helps a lot when I have to go from room to room and need my other hand to unlock the doors between them.

funny how you guys do it so different over the pond , being a painter myself i use both hands in certain situations when i have to use the right hand ,then change over tomy left and how we cut to the edge of the wood ,including how we do by the windows without getting paint on them .
Such a joy watching others do it so differently no matter the job gets done no matter how differently we all do it.
you calking or painting with sealant , there is a easier way you cut the top of the nozzle at a 45 degree angle to give you a perfect line without smoothing it out with your finger no matter which way you do it .

Just a tip about syringes. I do this for my fountain pens. If you hold the tip down into the paint / ink, and pull the piston back, you will inevitably have air in the syringe. Prime it with that paint / ink then pull it out, point it tip up at the sky, the paint / ink will settle against the piston head, and then compress the syringe to get all the air out until you start spewing paint / ink. You've now bled the syringe. Put it back into the paint / ink, and retract the piston to fill the syringe.

The weak link in Sherwin Williams exterior paint is the pigments used for tinting. You can go into ANY residential neighborhood and pick out a SW coated house. Extreme fading
SW states you can expect 50% color fade in year 1. They state a lifetime of their coating is 8 years on average. That’s what your lifetime coating is rated.
Now, you can also discover Benjamin Moore uses acrylic pigments that do not fade nearly as bad. I’ve done thousands of homes and can tell you Regal High Build will outperform Emerald and Duration for both new and residential repaint.
    Save your money.

Your assumption is incorrect. I have applied thousands, hundreds of thousands of gallons actually in my 38 years in the coatings industry. As both class 1 and Class 2 coatings, that would be commercial and automotive to those outside the industry.
If you understand planned obsolescence then you can understand what I stated in the first statement....... the weak link is in the pigments. They know it will fade, expect it to fade by 50% in year 1.
Yes, I know all about SWs R&D. I was involved with Chemical Coatings division as I aided in the development of Gem Lac in the 80’s and currently an independent coatings consultant

Looking great guys! I will say, when I built a shed from scratch a few years back, I didn't like a couple angles on some cuts and figured I'd come back with some caulk to cover it 12' in the air... and my father-in-law said, "Nobody will notice that but you." It's the burden of knowledge! But I realized years later that I didn't caulk it... and even looking for it now, I don't see it hardly at all. Perfectionism is the enemy of progress. It's good to be thorough and do things right, but even the things that "nobody will notice but you" fade over time. Enjoy your creation, take pride in your work, and give yourself some slack. ;-)

I think it’s going amazingly well since you’re doing it all yourselves. Sure a pro painter could do it a little better but not enough difference that your job won’t last just as long. I have been in the improvement/remodeling business since 1976 and think you three should be admired for this venture. I learned every day in my 47 year career as the tools of the trade, techniques and the materials evolved at the same time. GO STUD PACK!
