a manual box is better, when ur new DSG will brake you will understand.. its squishy and it costs so much, take a simple manual its stronger and if it brakes u just change and not expensive price at all compared to the DSG or automatic
The recent recalls in regards to the DSG gearboxes were mainly associated with the mass produced, cheaply made 7-Speed boxes that were found in the Polo's e.t.c. The DQ250 DSG box found in the Golf's e.t.c is extremely hardy and reliable. And if you're worried there are always tuners out there with available upgrades to the gearbox to better suit your needs.

This golf with 220 hp takes 21,4 seconds to 200 kmh, which is 3 seconds faster than a peugeot 308 GTi with 270 hp, and the same time as a Cupra 280 hp.. Lets not forget that the golf is slightly heavier than those two cars..
Unfortuntately I have not driven the Golf 7 GTD yet, this is still on my sheet. The GTI should definatley be quicker but quite a bit, but the GTD has the torque and feels quicker. So I would recommend for you to take the "Sound" package that adds a sound generator in the exhaust and you have the best of both worlds!?
DSG remaps usually feature the remove of the autoupshifting and the remove of the kick-down (auto downshifting when you press hard the throttle). Kickdown is something that annoys some people as they say it also happens in Manual mode, but I have no problems at all, as in Manual you can really go full throttle in 6th at 2000 rpm wthout engaging kickdown. To engage kickdown in Manual you must press a 'button' that is in the floor under the pedal, this is, go full thtottle and then press even more

This dropping of rpm seems to be typical for some Hyundai automatic models, an "old" Terracan I drove a few days back did the same Thing. The DSG stays in gear and rpm's are dropping gradually when Lifting you foot from the acceleration pedal, just as any other automatic Version within the VW Group.
fuel Efficiency is very good in my opinion. I hardly got mor than 10.5 Liter even with very fast driving. Manged to achieve 6.5 on country roads which is acutally amazing for this amount of power!
Thanks for your comment! I think the driver was flooring it because we tried two times in the same speed range. Don't know if it was DSG or manual, but either way it lost by 40-70 m, don't know the exact distance. I think fuel delivers some extra horsepower as you said. I use a special style in gear change, it's not easy. Have full revs/ full throttle between gear changes, therefore the revs keep quite high after changing up and the car keeps accelerating. You can break the gearbox with that :)

Every day driving like with any other car I would think around 7.5-8 Liters /100 km. If you want to have a bit fun probably 8.5 - 9.0. More than 10 only if you really hit it!
Thanks for your message. First of all I think that the 211 hp engine in the Seat (and many other VW/Audi models) ist a very good one that usually deliver more hp than the 211. So the horsepower difference between your FR and the 7 GTI might not be that much or even on pair. The high octane fuel definately makes some horsepower in the higher rev range (5-8hp). And you never know if that person in the GTI was really flooring it. Drag? DSG vs. manual? bad against good Driver;-)? I don't know.
in 2004 Civic type R were taking 19 sec from 0 to 200Kmh For a golf GTI to take 21 Sec to achieve 200 KMH is simply acceptable considering weight difference
It does have 250hp actually, you will notice it if you dyno run it (performance pack only), geez, 10 years ago when the R32 came out, I was like wow a V6 3.2 has 250 hp. Now, a GTI with Inline 4 2.0 Turbo has 250 hp, 350 nm compared to 320 nm with the r32. And of course it accelerates quicker

thanks for the explanation, i like dsg only couse car is a bit faster, but dont like that you have not a full control of gearbox, that is a great thing if you can remap it :) D mod is realy great for city driving, just pres a pedal a litle bit and it change by it self al gears, especialy for stop and go thing. I drove few days ago a new B-class, with similar gearbox, and sport mode and pedals shift and and I used for 15 minutes and I liked it.
So if you plan to remap your GTI, better factor in some money for a proper performance-oriented clutch. Other than that, VW manual gearboxes are also prone to some scratching inserting 2nd gear, but have nice feeling overall. DSG is more comfortable for city driving and gives you more confidence attacking corners downshifting aggresibely as it will never misshift throwing you into a delicate situation, and also can give you slightly better acceleration through gears, but can be more boring.
That means that the car never hits the true rev limiter (the ra-ta-ta-ta! noise so common heard with young ricer drivers), it upshifts automatically just shy of reaching the limiter, in manual mode and in S mode at full throttle. In D mode, te changing pont depends on your driving, usually varying between 200 rpm and 4000 rpm. But then if you don't like auto-upshifting at the limitar and want to really hit the limiter, then there are DSG remaps that include this feature.
Want to share my experience on the highway. Have a Seat Leon 2.0 TSI FR 211 model 2012 stock. Had an acceleration test with a Golf GTI VII, don't know if it was 217 or 227 hp Performance. Started with tachometer speed 140 until approx. 200 km/h. Strangely my Seat accelerated way better, we tried two times. Have been using high octane fuel octane 99+, don't know if it was the reason. From 210-240 km/h it was quite even. Good weather conditions + 18 C. Any ideas why VW GTI was slow??
...and they say it can reduce fuel compsumption. OF course you can deactivate this feature. It is strange, as we all know that a car in a long gear, when you lift throttle, the car does not consume fuel (the OBC shows 0.0), while at tickover it indeed consumes a slight amount of fuel, but VW has some tricky technical explanation that I cannot recall that justified that gliding mode could slightly reduce compsumptionon motorway :P
I have a SantaFe auto and when I take the foot of the acceleration pedal the rpm drops fast to 1k, and it's not upshifting because it does the same thing in 5th gear and even in tiptronic mode, my question, is the dsg act the same, or when you lift the foot of the acceleration pedal the gear stays engaged and the rpm drops gradualy, like a manual

Yep, i would assume if it a DSG gearbox, it wouldnt downshift knowing that it is potentially destructive to the engine, but if it is a dedicated manual car, i guess you could, but there goes your engine lol.

Well, we've had DSG in GTI, GTD, R32 and Audi's for the last 7 years without any Problems and those cars made up to 100.000 km each. I would say the DSG's are not less reliable than other modern automatic transmissions.
It is reliable for being an auto box, but as any other complex mechanism compared to a more simpler variant, there are more chances that something go wrong, nothing new here. What i mean is that it is reliable, but could be less reliable than a manual gearbox, as the latter does not have any of the electrohydraulic and electronic stuff that DSG has.
Sportauto's Christian Gebhardt(Channel: cc8186) did 259 km/h on speedo /watch?v=tfcF80cDyc0, but with the performance-version Wahnsinn, mit 220PS in knapp über 21 Sekunden(nach Tacho) ist schon sensationell, da fährt er jeder Konkurrenz davon. The VW tachometer is especially misleading, 210 km/h is real 200 and 260 is real 247 approximately. So 0-210 (real 200) is about 25 second or just a bit less. Good but not 21,6 seconds like S3 or TTs engines for exemple.

Actually couldn't try it out due to the traffic conditions. But judging from the decent pull I would expect this go up to 260 km/h on speedometer.

+Benjamin Jung i have 1998 integra 1'8 220hp+. Without turbo. It has 190 stock, but it is easily tunable to 220.

What kind of MPG are you getting with regular driving?
Why does it have a six speed gearbox when it can exceed 200kmh in 4th? Maybe it should have a lower final drive ratio.

GTI seems to absolutely demolish 80-145km (50-90mph), relative to its power to weight ratio

Well, we've had DSG in GTI, GTD, R32 and Audi's for the last 7 years without any Problems and those cars made up to 100.000 km each. I would say the DSG's are not less reliable than other modern automatic transmissions.
It is reliable for being an auto box, but as any other complex mechanism compared to a more simpler variant, there are more chances that something go wrong, nothing new here. What i mean is that it is reliable, but could be less reliable than a manual gearbox, as the latter does not have any of the electrohydraulic and electronic stuff that DSG has.

Wahnsinn, mit 220PS in knapp über 21 Sekunden(nach Tacho) ist schon sensationell, da fährt er jeder Konkurrenz davon. Was mich ja wundert ist, dass er im 2. und 4. Gang schon bei 6200 Umdrehungen hochschaltet im 1. und 3. aber erst bei ca. 6800...

Nächstes Mal könntest Du wenigstens die geschätzen 100 bzw. 200 lt. GPS messen.... es bringt nicht wirklich viel bei 200 laut Tacho zu stoppen, wenn man weiß dass die VW Tachos bei 200 knapp 10 km/h Vorlauf haben.

The VW tachometer is especially misleading, 210 km/h is real 200 and 260 is real 247 approximately. So 0-210 (real 200) is about 25 second or just a bit less. Good but not 21,6 seconds like S3 or TTs engines for exemple.
