    I finally felt good about cleaning my fan, finding a simple and noob friendly method.
    THEN i looked at the comments and saw all of these specific technical warnings saying to not do this, make sure to do that, and now im just as stressed. I have no idea how to do anything with computers, and even after googling extensively I haven't been able to find anything that says any type of estimate for how much it might cost to have a professional do it. AARGH

    For those of you who didn't figure out this fellow would most likely clean his bed afterward also appear to have nothing else to do but try to criticize someone who obviously was trying to offer very clear instructions on how to clean a lap top fan.
    I think the rest of us found the video useful and appreciate the care shockdoctor took in preparing and presenting it.

    Great video but WARNING! NEVER let your fan freewheel when cleaning it. This can generate a low current voltage that can zap sensitive components.

    compressed air in a can? seriously, i've never even known you could buy that.
    priceless piece of advice coming up: instead of spending several bucks on something as omnipresent as 'air' you might as well use your pair of lungs to what I will call 'inhale' a portion of said air, aim your lips (which you will have to purse in some way so that only a little air at a time can get through) at the part of the laptop you want to rid of dust and 'exhale' sharply. You're very welcome.

    Hi, I went to Tesco,s and bought the compressed air can ;I took the covers off ,took the batt. off, shot the air onto the fan the dust came off [4.5years of dust] I put it all back together ;on start up the fan could not be heard! there is now cold air coming from the vents. thr Acer lap top is now much quicker to upload and has has speeded up! Well done and Many Thanks
    Your the Man! Dave.

    Good advise. My laptop is three years old and I routinely vacuum the fan intake with a small shop vac. Takes a minute and you can see in the first few seconds all the dust exit the fan. No need to take it apart. Runs like new every time.

    @KHAN1350 i have the dv7t also. there is a cover that goes around the entire outside of the bottom to access the fan

  • @qinella
    @qinella 14 лет назад

    I'd definitely recommend doing this outside and certainly not on your bed. Once that dust gets airborne, it's going to be a pain to vacuum up. Also, you should put a Q-tip in between the fan spokes to keep it from spinning. The air can make the fan move too fast and damage it.

    If it doesn't help, try getting i8kfan to help regulate the temperature. Also getting NHC or some other similar software to undervolt your processor should help as well. Look on google for these as well as a tutorial to safely undervolt a laptop's processor. I did all of that on my Latitude D400 and the temps went from 188 to 200 degrees F to 140 to 127 degrees F.

    HP etc. could learn a few tricks from dell. Dell: "Ah well let's make the fan easily accessible". HP:" Let's put the fan under the motherboard so the user has to remove EVERYTHING before they can get to the fan *insert evil laughter*".

  • @shockdoctor1992
    @shockdoctor1992  14 лет назад

    you can just spray the air right into the fan from the outside but it is much more effective if you take off the covering so you can get all throughout it and get every bit of dirt and dust out.

    @MrDeivi1994 this aint my upload, I just a friendly tech guy that was aiding some help. I have a compaq nc6350 and a DV9208NR, and both does have access ports to the fan like the dell XPS, because the fan cover is a new concept and xps are newer then ours. But yeah when in doubt don't do something because you may mess up. All the inspirions have is just vents same problem with many laptops. Cleaning it with a port door make things hella easier but still can be clean just in the vents with time

  • @MrEunderhill
    @MrEunderhill 12 лет назад

    On my older Dell, You just pull the keyboard to get to the fan. The compressed air tends to cool down the heat sink way down and the fan won't run for a while until it heats back up.

  • @mistargrr
    @mistargrr 11 лет назад

    Once your computer starts to turn off by itself without warning or even freezes, that's when you know that your computer is overheating.
    You could minimize heat generated by lowering your maximum processor state from 100% to 99% or even 75%, depending on how much memory (RAM) you need. Right-click the battery icon > Power Options > Change advanced power settings > Processor power management > Maximum processor state. Otherwise, get some fans and clear the dust inside too.

  • @ctmedic09
    @ctmedic09 11 лет назад

    A couple of things. This is great if you just want to do a routine clean. However, if you are noticing overheating you should really detach the fan from the heatsnyc and clean it fully. Second you should never do this on a bed or anywhere you can produce static. On wrong move and you can short out the system. Also, make sure if you do it this way to have some high quality thermal paste to replace it. This combo will reduce your internal temp drastically. Just did it and went down 23 C

    Staples is a store that sells material for your office. It sells computers, hardware, books and i think it should have compressed air for computer cleanup too.

  • @shockdoctor1992
    @shockdoctor1992  14 лет назад

    @Deraco1 that is a very good point. also you still want to use short bursts of air as not to accidentally spray the liquid form of the air onto anything as this can damage both the computer and your skin

  • @Gorf1234
    @Gorf1234 12 лет назад

    No - in fact one thing you should always do (which this video does not show) is disconnect the fan's power connector from the motherboard before blowing air on it. You can't disconnect the plug without removing the cover.
    If you just blow air into the vents, you can't tell if the dust comes out of the opposite vent or distributes itself over the motherboard.

  • @TriskaidekaPunk
    @TriskaidekaPunk 13 лет назад

    @MrDeivi1994 a soft tooth brush, just dont use a hair dryer(too hot) or a air house on a compressor(too strong), and if you touch it with you hands say to grab big pieces of dust, wear gloves because of static discharge and the oils on you skin can premature the board components. But if you are able to take the blower fan out easily and away form the computer(like the fan has a quick disconnect and not soldered) a hair dyer would be fine on it bc most blowers have a sealed lubed or ball bearing

    First, there is no fan in the back, that is the exhaust vent. Second, use an air hose or Q-TIPS, it works 100% better.

    I would just like to give some pointers on this.
    Make sure you never spin up the fan to fast or you can create an electric current that could harm your laptop. It's best to hold the fan still.
    Not all laptops open as easy to get to the cpu fan. Some require you to disasemble it completly. So if you open it arrange all screws you get out by lenght and width and remember where they go.
    Also make sure the fan engine still works properly. Give it a little spin and it should bounce back & forwar

  • @YuHoUkkola
    @YuHoUkkola 11 лет назад

    Air can is best option for cleaning. Just make sure you ceep bursts short, because if you make fan spin too fast it will get damaged. So, short bursts of air is best way to clean it.

  • @kakajunn20
    @kakajunn20 11 лет назад

    if you put vacuum cleaner too close to the fan it might be statically charged, the main advantage of compressed air is the speed of the airflow is so massive, that it blows out any dust inside the fan. I recommend compressed air, it doest cost too much either, got mine for 4€ of 400ml compressed air and that was enough to clean 3 laptops, and there is still 15% left in it.

  • @wewillrockyou1986
    @wewillrockyou1986 11 лет назад

    You should avoid letting the fan move if you did. My two laptops (MSi GT60 and Macbook late 2008) allowed me to remove the fan and its housing. I took a new paint brush (the ones kids use to paint on paper) and brushed the fan blades and housing while sucking the dust that that picked up with my vacuum cleaner. If you do end up needing to spin the fan for some reason make sure it is disconnected from the mother board.

  • @memd777
    @memd777 12 лет назад

    You should do it only if you have less pressure inside (i.e., if you have very low amount of air left), shaking will increase the pressure of the compressed air. More the pressure, more the speed of flow of air.

  • @shockdoctor1992
    @shockdoctor1992  14 лет назад

    @MrFerraridevil NO the spray is not to disinfect the area or kill anything it is simply to dislodge the stuck pieces of dirt and dust

  • @circlemoyer
    @circlemoyer 12 лет назад

    @OllieSaer4983 no. because the fan isn't built to spin in that way, so you, in effect, damage the fan. You also just push the dust around inside the case, which makes it very ineffective.

    you do need to use it in a certain time frame. eventually all the pressure leaks out and it becomes useless. i still say opening up the bottom is the best way to clean the fan but if you feel its too complicated dont try it because you may break somthing.

    Sometimes airduster alone isnt enough for a computer thats had years of dust accumulation. some laptops are easier than others to clean. iff its easy to access the actuall cpu and heatsinks, clean both to ensure that you computer will maintain a cool temperature. Remeber to reapply the thermal paste once you've cleaned the cpu.

  • @shockdoctor1992
    @shockdoctor1992  14 лет назад

    @pipomenas i actually mentioned that in the video around 4:33 or so. that is the liquid form of the air. it is both very bad for the computer and your skin as it can cause frostbite. it happens if you turn the can upside down or shoot in too long of a burst. make sure you shoot short bursts of air with the can right side up or you can destroy your computer and possibly your skin.

  • @PlatinumMic
    @PlatinumMic 13 лет назад

    @Templehawk : I have to disagree with you. On my laptop, the CPU kept overheating, and the heat sink had been thoroughly cleaned from the outside. It got so bad I had to order a replacement cooling unit. When I opened the machine, and removed the original fan unit, I discovered further build-up that was NOT evident from outside. Flushing that solved the problem, so now I have a spare cooling unit to extend the life of my laptop. Fortunately I only have to lift the keyboard and remove two screws.

    @loremasterzannadee if that is the sound it is making, it is very possible this is all you need to do. try cleaning it out very thoroughly and see what happens. make sure you do it every few months because dust and dirt can easily get sucked into the fan space

    Canned air will loosen the dust particles sticking to the surface of the fan, grill etc. Next time the fan starts, it will blow the loose dirt particles in to the air.

    I just used my vacuum cleaner on full power like a boss :]
    procedure:
    1. screw out the back of your laptop so the vent is more or less accessible
    2. first vacuum the rest of your laptop on very low power so the sucking power doesnt destroy anything.
    3. Than move on to the fan, put your finger on the fan so it cant move while your vacuuming. Than go round the fan sucking all corners of the fan on FULL POWAH.
    4. put the back of your laptop back in it's place and put the screws back in.

    @Templehawk well first of all just spraying through the grates only gets some of the dust and dirt out not all of it. secondly never spray in long bursts thats how the coolant becomes a liquid and freezes the internal workings of the computer. and thirdly why did you watch this video if you have your own solution to the problem?

  • @costellom5
    @costellom5 14 лет назад

    That's now how you get rid of the dust.The dust is nice and stuck in the heatsink and that work with the spray can isn't gonna get it all out.I had to took the vent completly out and clean it.

  • @H704B
    @H704B 11 лет назад

    Well, vacuuming the fan air socket does get the dust out, but you'll face a problem if there are large chunks of dust, as they might get stuck in the socket holes or the fan itself..
    I just tried vacuuming, and large balls of dust clogged up the small holes and the fan, I did manage to get them out with a needle in about an hour or so..
    I wouldn't recommend it unless there is no other way to do it, such as my case :)

    The cover of the fan is the plastic black case the fan lies in it, as you see it here-------> 4:08.
    Remove the screws that holds the fan's case (& the fan of course) on the processor & the graphics card & then open the fan's case (screws probably on it too) & you can see your enemy... DUST.
    BUT, you'll need to 1st clean carefully the contacts on the CPU, the graphics card & the heatsink AND cover them again with fresh thermal grease paste BEFORE you screw the fan on them again...

    oh yes i just found this video randomly by the way but you dont clean a fan in a desktop or a laptop anyday with compressed air because if you use compressed air it just blows the dust further into the parts of the machine and you have a higher chance of failure if you do so the best way to do is to use a vaccum

  • @laustudie
    @laustudie 12 лет назад

    After that:
    5. Let it run for a full night so the fans can work out any remaining dust.
    6. enjoy a dust free laptop.
    ATTENTION:
    Only use this tactic if your lazy and dont care if it "could" break your computer and if the dust in your laptop has build up in huge ammounts. For me it never failed but it's still rather risky especially if you forget to hold the fan while vacuuming.
    Good luck ! :)

  • @techbill2900
    @techbill2900 9 лет назад

    no, the air is drawn in from the bottom and expelled through the back. Most notebooks are not that easy to have access to the fan. with the fan running squirt the "air" in the exhaust port. will clean out the dust well enough. What is inside the can is tetrafluoromethane, yes the liquid will freeze on contact.

  • @Loger01
    @Loger01 10 лет назад +1

    The grid on the back is not intake, it's the exhaust. The fan sucks air in from underneath, and blows it out behind. Important to remember when using laptops, keep them on a FLAT SOLID surface. Putting a laptop on a bed while doing CPU heavy stuff is a death sentance. It's gonna overheat and fry the thermal paste on the hardware components. Once they're fried you're gonna need them replaced (if your PC doesnt die first) and that will cost you. Good luck with your laptop. Also, not all fans are as easily accessed as this one. Using compressed air without taking off the panels will also do the trick, though not as thoroughly.

    Just how to explain it?
    What I tried to do was to reverse the air flow in the fan's case in order to pull out the dust that stucks in there.
    So I took the vacuum's pipe & put it under the laptop at the window where the fan sucks air. At the same time I was spraying inside with compressed air the where air usually comes out (that's at the left of the laptop).
    I reversed the air flow pulling out the dust (with the laptop off of course). All of it I believe...
    You got it now?

    @KanameKashita Sorry no dice on the dv9000, for I have one too, the last thing to really remove, or well the first thing placed in the laptop during assembly is the heatstink and blower fan, so to get to it you will have to remove everything including the entire motherboard assembly out of the laptop, The best bet is get the can of air with the straw and push it in the exhaust/intake vents n short burst, then you could use a vacuum to suck out anything loose. Best luck

  • @airplanetony

  • @TriskaidekaPunk

    @KanameKashita I am saying just like a house hold fan dust get stuck every where, so spray exhaust and intake to knock it all lose, start with exhaust then intake (intake is the one on the bottom). But also the dv9000 is know for damn good graphics card, and for that a short battery, and a lot of heat. So the stock fan is a POS any ways. So an upgrade would be best or get a Evercool-nbfa1-notebook-fan But yeah professional is fine ( at bestbuy), mine is naturally hot......

    I DIDN"T remove not one screw from the laptop.
    I took the vacuum & put it where the fan "breath's" from AND to where the fan's air usually goes out, I sprayed with the compressed air.
    The result was beyond expectations. My laptop started operating normally again !
    I've done this three or four times the last mounth with no negative results on the fan.
    Still I don't say it's safe...

    your going to have to take off the whole compartment surrounding the fan. it is the same process as just the fan (unscrew all the screws holding it in place and take it off.)

    @RomanEmpireHealed Agree with you, this is a superficial cleaning nothing more.. If you what to completly clean the fan u have to clean the "carpet" of dust that is formed between the fan and the heatsink, and for that i use a brush and u have to disasemble the fan from the heatsink!

    I was always taught that blowing compressed air into a computer was bad. Running a mini vacuum over it works better as you're not blowing dust about and into delicate areas. ALSO blowing it into the fan is a bad, BAD idea as it can cause it to overspin an damage those components.
    Go for a mini vacuum instead. Use the compressed air [at angles] for keyboards.

    @hover1977 you probably already fixed the problem but that happened to my desktop and I called a guy over to fix it and all he did was take out one part, blow on it and put it back and that fixed it so make sure you didn't get dust under anything important

    @jimykx2 i wouldnt use a vacuum cleaner. it may be too powerful and could damage the internal workings of your computer. if that is really all you have, be extremely careful and dont expect your coverage to cover it

    I shot some bursts of air through the rear vent of my HP pavilion dv5. With each burst, I could see clouds of dust (I assume) escape from the fan vent on the bottom of my laptop. It used to be constantly blowing and whirring, but now it seems to be a lot calmer/ less inclined to start heating up and start the fan.
    I didn't open my laptop to do this.

    @SkyThunder1 it wont void the warranty unless you do something wrong and break the computer.

    @95jim you want to shoot in short bursts to stop the liquid form of the spray from coming out. this can ruin you computer and possibly give you frostbite
