Making a Handmade Leather Deck Case for Magic: The Gathering
Sometimes you need to have a super nice deck case for your favorite Magic: The Gathering commander deck. So here it is! Follow along as we make a beautiful full leather deck case for our MTG commander deck from start to finish. We'll hand cut, hand sew, saddle stitch, burnish, make piping and edge banding, and have fun doing it all. Keep it casual and omit all the luxury details for a utilitarian leather deck case, or use exotic leathers and multiple seams for a super luxe feel!
Ohhh... Theres my Monday project settled. Thanks, Eric! 🤩
Funny: I'm a card store owner (MTG, Brazil) and I was looking for a new hobby, when my brother suggested leatherworking...
After i watched he video "How to Start Leather Crafting", the next one was this. =D
Thanks for the tips for a beginner! It really makes me want to buy a lot of tools before I even start, but I will stick to your tip of starting little by little. 😁
Your "squeezey things" are called sheet metal hand-seaming pliers. They're handy for tons of things... like leather.
It's 2:30 AM for me. And I'm watching you. Thanks to you, Eric. I started playing with leather. I'm slowly developing my skills and I love it. I need to take a break for one day and for the whole time I was thinking about next projects and so on.
I just wanna thank you. You are the best!
Greetings from Poland😅
Looks like I've got some christmas presents to make for my friends who play! Thank you so much Eric!!
This is a beautiful design! I've been toying with trying to come up with a deck box design for leather for years and nothing I've done comes close to this. Love the simplicity and the look. Picking up the template right now!
YES!!! Been waiting for this video since you posted the first one on IG!!!
❤ Thank you 😊
Outstanding! There's a lot to learn and practice here. Thanks!
Great video. A little extra work and you have a nice trim. Preciate cha'. 👍
Thanks for the inspiration 🎉
I’ve been watching other people make these forever, but I assumed it was so niche that you’d never make one. I’m glad I was wrong!
if this was just a little bigger and had felt lining this could be a camera lense pouch!
perfect timing, i was looking exactly at making one for myself lmao
Ayyy MTG!
Shop tour please!!!
Thank you for doing the edge banding, I've been looking for a good tutorial on that. Is there a reason you didn't glue the strip to the base? I'll have to try it both ways and see which I prefer. Did you use the 4 oz leather for the edge banding? It looks much thinner. Thanks!
beautiful design I'm in the process of doing a case myself and I always love to see how others do the same project.
However, as a warning, most Magic players prefer rigid cases as the cards could bend otherwise. I would love to see how would your approach be, I'm going to try to place some rigid plastic in between layers of leather
Another possibility is a rigid box that sits inside 🤔?
My son plays, and he worries about his cards bending, so he puts them in binders, boxes, and thin plastic cases. But this case should be okay as long as the cards are tightly packed in them. I will have to test it out.😊
what! I was just talking to my MTG group about wanting to do something like this
Do you have a recommendation for skiving knife?
I'd wager if a crafter really wanted to flex they could do a French seam make a bi-leather front and back panel with edge binding... Or even 3 leathers and do like a red white and blue
What is the surface you're skiving/punching on, please? It looks like a coarse surfaced stone, which seems Like it would be hard on skiving knife edges? 😳
Single or double sleeved commander deck for the pattern sizing
either or!
Will you be offering these on your site at some point? They look fantastic
Shoot me a DM on instagram, I've been making them custom for a little while now if you'd like one :)
