Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac - "Oh Well", Live@ Music Mash 1969

  • Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac throwing it down on the BBC's Monster Music Mash in 1969. With a little more work, I think this could have been at least as recognizable of a blues-rock hit as Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog".

Said by others who actually knew him, Peter Green was so self-effacing he named his band after his friends, drummer and bassist Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. The only guitarist to give B.B. King the cold sweats. Fantastic guitarist who will be greatly missed.

I don't think the band underappreciated him, Christine always spoke well of him. Technically all of the originals have been forgotten by the Nick's Buckingham fans. Kirwan was however very problematic, Green had trouble with him as did the rest, hence why he was booted out after that episode of refusing to play on a show just to prove a point. Hell he was so mentally unstable he lived in the streets during the 80s and died in a homeless shelter. His three solo albums are really good tho. Hell all of the Spencer, Green and Kirwan solo stuff is great tbh.

Fleetwood Mac with "Oh Well", followed by John McLaughlin's "A Love Supreme", then maybe something from Sopwith Camel, like..."Fazon", ending with a taste of Miles Davis from "Bitches Brew"...and on it went. Everybody has their favourite white blues guitarist from that era and each one has his merits. Clapton invented "the sound" (Les Paul into a cranked Marshall) and Page really invented Heavy Metal. Jeff Beck had his moments too and it's great to see that he's still playing creative music now and not just resting on his laurels. But my favourite is Peter Green. He could rock with the rest but he also had the most delicate touch of all of them. Listen to him playing a slow minor blues like "I've Got A Good Mind To Give Up Living" or "First Time Alone" on John Mayall's "Blues From Laurel Canyon" and you realise that he really had the blues. B B KIng famously said that he was the only white blues guitarist who gave him the cold sweats and I'm with him on that.

RIP Peter Greene. Even the great BB King saw and knew his greatness! I love there sound! My mom made me listen to this in the 70’s when I was a kid. I am thankful for that!

Kirwan and Green knew they had something good. Their rivalry drove them to be the best, even if it made them lock horns and just hate each other, which is a shame, given the high-quality sound their dual guitar riffs produced. This sound defines Fleetwood Mac for me. Thanks for posting!

Kirwan and Green didn't hate each other, as far as I know. But if you were talking about Kirwan and Bob Welch, it would be understandable.

@@rabootocoelhinho5698 Kirwan and Green had a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for each other. They apparently had bitter disagreements at times, but always managed to produce magic. They were both going through a lot at the time, and both reflected fondly on each other in interviews at later points in their lives.
