Anodising is an electro chemical process
It will not chip or peel (but doesn't last forever does it! Anodising does not resist salty water like in my dishwasher or the sea or sea air.)
Anodising is carried out in a sulphuric acid bath, a cathode is mounted to the inside
    Aluminium acts as anode
    Loaded on carrier racks
    -
Anodising is a highly controlled form of oxidation. There are 5 stages (8 really counting the rinsing!)
1 Cleaning to remove grease in an alkali bath, and rinse
2 Etching with caustic or acid bath, and rinse (called: de-smutting)
3 Anodising - current releases the oxygen which grows the anodised layer out of the surface - this generates a lot of heat and the electrolyte must be cooled to maintain the correct temperature.
Time in the bath regulates the thickness. Following this the anodised product is rinsed in de-ionised water to remove all minerals that could produce spotting in the final steps
4 Colouring. The newly created anodised surface is porous! And dies or pigments can be introduced.
5 Sealing. Finally, the pores must be sealed using a nickel acetate.
