The pattern day trader (PDT) rule applies to traders that have less than $25,000 in their trading account. If you make four or more day trades within a five-day period using a margin account, you can be considered a pattern day trader.
Many new traders get stuck or blocked from trading by their broker because they don't understand how some of these rules apply. Understanding that a trader only gets three day trades in a rolling five day period may help avoid being blocked from trading. Quite frequently, brokers will lock an account for 90 days after the PDT rule is broken.
For example, if you make three day trades on Monday, you cannot make another day trade until the following Monday. If you make a day trade on Monday, another on Tuesday, and another on Wednesday, you've now used all three of your day trades and you cannot make another one until the following Monday. But that following Monday, you’ll only get that one trade back.
New traders with small accounts often trade volatile stocks to quickly grow their accounts. These traders especially should be paying attention to the PDT rule so they’re not stuck in good trade-turned bad.
Always be aware of how many day trades you’ve made in a 5-day rolling period. Write it down, or keep it in your trading journal.

I am so glad you patiently and clearly explain these little intricacies of the stock world. I had the misunderstanding that it was 3 day trades a day, with NO awareness of the rolling 5 days. Tim S. keeps saying "hold overnight," so I thought if I held overnight, it wouldn't be counted a day trade. I just heard about the rolling 5 day period, today, so of course I needed to look it up to understand it better. I'm glad my co-worker corrected me, otherwise, I might have been caught & penalized with acting on wrong info.

The very first thing I do before even looking at stocks in the morning is look at how many day trades I have left . If I have one , then usually I make a trade. If I have none left then I just paper trade . Sometimes being under the PDT Rule is a good thing because it limits trades which can help build discipline because you have to be smarter about the trades you do make and less trades also means less potential losses .

I'm trying to do top-down analysis and MTF analysis, but it doesn't work for me. I'm like, clearly I'm in the 90% losing money, so I open a demo account, do my analysis, then take the opposite of what I would normally take (I know, that sounds silly but I was desperate) and get the same result. It only counts if its the same day. So if you are under 25K, you can still make more than 3 moves in a 5 day period, you just can only buy and sell the same stock in the same day 3 times. When I was under 25K I could typically scalp 3x in a week, and then swing 8-10 stocks over multi day periods in that week.

I need help. If I buy a stock at 3 pm on a monday and sell at 12 pm on tuesday, is that a day trade because its within 24 hours? Or no because the market closed on monday before I sold on tuesday?

Does the Pattern Day Trading Rule or FINRA Rule apply to investors that live outside the USA? Or are they free of this rule or do they have another rule?

what about if acc has over 25K? does this rule apply to them? is there a need to talk to broker to un- check the box for day trading? Thank you

I know this was intended to fully explain the PDT rules, but actually it didn't. I have many questions still. One of the big clarifications I would like is: if the account has over $25K in value (positions and cash), do PDT rules affect the account at all? The reason I ask is that I have a far larger account and yet recently did a large daytrade, then received a warning notice from the broker to observe PDT rules. In fact, their notice was not very clear about the specifics. I am still looking to read the exact wording of these rulings.

To become a pattern day trader, is the $25,000 based on your account value or does it factor in your margin value as well?

Hey Tim, if you have a cash account, are you still subject to the PDT rule? I know that if you have a cash account instead of a margin account, you cannot short, but isnt it worth it if you have no PDT restrictions? Thanks for your help.

You're not under PDT but you'll have to wait for your cash to settle. It usually takes about 2 days.

Or do I still have the limitation of 3 trades every 5 business days?

What about the $25,000? My account was above that & I'd done a bunch of day trades. Now that it fell under due to o e of my positions being down, my account flagged & I can't day trade. If I simply add funds to bring it up over $25000 again, if it rises on it's own, am I good to day trade again as much as I want?

Hi great video. So just To clarify. Is it just Your account that Has to be worth over $25,000? So I bought some Tesla stock and if I reach $25,000 plus market value but have not sold.
And then Use some extra money to be doing day trading can I trade every 5 minutes if I want or do I have to wait for those funds to settle ? Before I can trade the money again. I’m talking about cash. I don’t do margin trading.

Another Question: I'm seeing a ton of sites saying this PDT rule doesn't apply to cash accounts. That it only applies to Margin accounts. Since my "Chase You Invest" account is a "Cash" account, can I day trade as much as I want?

If you enter a trade and your account is $25,001, then you exit the trade and your balance is $24,999, I have two questions from there: (1) Since you exited the trade with a balance less than $25K, does this count as a day trade.... (2) Does your next trade with an account balance of $24,999 count as your first day trade in the 5-day period unless you pump more money into your account to meet the 25K requirement?

So this may be a stupid question but I want to know 100 percent before this would ever happen to me. Let’s say I sold 2 different stocks that I bought 7+ business ago this wouldn’t count as 2 trade corrects?
I guess what I’m asking if I buy a stock Monday and sell the stock Tuesday this does not count as a trade?
My final question is what if I buy a stock Monday sell that same stock Tuesday then buy a DIFFERENT STOCK TUESDAY and Sell that different stock wenesday is that marked?

So what if you have 25k then your day trading then your stock goes down so your sitting at 19k ( if everything was to be sold in that moment in time)
DOES that make you go into the rule at that time then?? im so confused.
