You must be on the east coast. Those all look perfect striper bait size. Here in NorCal the striper follow up the Shad but the average size Shad is like 14” here. Anytime I do get one 10” or under I use them live for huge striper
Oh yea man for sure! Yup, east coast. Always wanted to fish your way in cal! We do the same here, we live line perch and the smaller shad and produce a great amount of striper and flathead catfish here in the river!!
@@ZackBostick awesome!! I’ve always wanted to come fish the monster striper out on the east coast. The ca state record size is regularly caught on the east coast. Yes! Very similar. They have the same species come through, do thier thing and head back to the ocean. Hickory shad, american shad, river herring, striper, perch.

How deep is the water there and how fast is the water moving? If it’s deep or the water is moving faster, the fish may be deeper, so you may need more weight. Or possibly less, if water is slow and shallow. Are you sure it was shad? We have plenty of perch being caught on grubs as the shad have moved out from this area. Where are you fishing? What state?
@@ZackBostick I'm from Sacramento, CA. It's shad session. Shad has tons of small bones and very tasty. I wasn't sure how deep the water maybe, but if they swim around 4ft-10ft, a 1 oz weight is sufficient. If it's more, I'll maybe do 2 oz. However, when I was on the boat, I used 4 oz to switch it up and started catching Shads. The water was slowing moving. Thanks for the reply.
Yea man, if you found the depth of where the fish were then that is all on you! Good stuff! You eat the shad there? A lot of people here eat the roe but not so much the fish! Happy you got you some!!
Also add a feathered single hook about 6inches in front of that spoon. We also remove that big hook on the spoon and put a split ring and a treble hook

Yea, up that far, different fishery. Shad, and these spawning species for the spring dont get past the fall line. Some do, but I wouldn't fish for them. Oh yeaa, Im sure the smallmouth are great over there!
@@ZackBostick tried Sunday. Tried a very heavy spoon with a shad fly of son (who was fly-fishing). Ended up losing it, after getting it hung several times. Went to Green top and picked up your suggested size plus one size up. Start with 1/2 oz. Weight? Going to set up everything on swivels, and premake leaders with spoons on end, dart in middle.
Better than catching nothing man. From a kayak, you dont need a whole half oz. But it will still work. You will just be fishing a bit deeper. Really depends on the depth youre fishing. At this time, the fish arent always hugging the bottom. I would minimize swivels. Not needed and in some cases, will make the presentation larger than you want and or mess with the action of the spoon. If you are running a weight, having a spoon and a dart might lead to headaches. More chances of the rig tangling itself. But youll get the hang of it, just may take a sec. Sorry for late reply!
