- 🐘 Reintroducing Elephants 🇳🇦 🇦🇴
We assisted the Mount Etjo Safari Lodge team with an amazing elephant translocation project. A total of 26 elephants were reintroduced to the Cuatir Nature Reserve in south-east Angola.
The elephant population outgrew the carrying capacity of the Mount Etjo reserve, and the ongoing drought has put even more stress on the animals and habitat of the reserve. The decision was therefore made to move part of the population to the Cuatir reserve in Angola. With big trees in the forests, a river, floodplains and grasslands, Cuatir is a true paraside for the elephants! The trip itself was not easy due to the difficult roads, but thanks to the ingenuity of Alex Oelofse each trip went better and better! During the travel the elephants got water, camel thorn pods and fresh Angolan branches. We are very happy to report that all the elephants have settled in, and are all together.
We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Mount Etjo team - Annette, Alex, Rudie, and Carola - for allowing us to be part of this incredible elephant project. Your exceptional efforts in conservation are truly commendable!
A special thanks to Stefan van Wyk, the driving force behind the Cuatir reserve, who is an inspiring example of a true conservationist to many. Visit angola-unchart... for more information about this beautiful reserve. We also appreciate Dr. Mike Chase and Kelly Landen from Elephants Without Borders for their invaluable involvement. Additionally, we thank Frank Schatz from Cowboy's Trading & Rental Solutions, Dr. H.O. Reuter, Max, and drivers Apollo and Ferdinand. We are very proud to have played a part in this, our gratitude extends to everyone involved in making this epic translocation project a success!

God bless all of these people for saving these animals. There is good vegetation at the new location with lush water and lots of greens. Just make sure they know where the water is.
Thank you for this monumental effort. May the elephants adjust to their new home and reestablish nature. May God Bless❤.

Wonderfull job! Keep going. It's the futur of all the kids
So much enjoyed my time at Mt. Etjo, so looking forward to returning. So pleased that this project was successful. If anyone knows how to capture and move African animals, it’s the Oelofse family.
Thankyou for a stunning informative video...
Great Work, You Are All Wonderful.
Loved being a part of this!♥️
Brilliant Brilliant Brilliant its good to be alive to see this
Happy Happy das alles gut gegangen
Good day . I am going to ask you how many off the animals taken to the DRC are still alive and well. Just being realistic about it . The same with the animals taken to Angola. Just love Namibia since i was their on the border in the 80 s. Best of wishes to all of you for what you are doing .
That is a good question! We have translocated many animals to several reserves across the DRC. Overall the animals are doing well, and populations are increasing. Some species struggled though, for example the giraffes in western part of the DRC. Although that is very unfortunate, it is a good learning experience for future projects.
Wunder wonder schoen klasse❤❤❤
Meticulously planned. Flawlessly executed.
Wonderfully documented. 👏🏾
Was this a complete family unit ? Even though some of the family may have been left behind and I know how much family means to eles, I'm relieved these children now have a better chance of life here. Will these eles be monitored regularly to ensure they are safe against human wildlife conflict and poaching ? Or is that not a concern at Cuatir ?
Multiple family units were carefully chosen by Mount Etjo, this took months of observations and planning. The elephants are well monitored by the Cuatir team, and fortunately the area in where the reserve is in has very few people living there. The reserve in where the elephants are in is fenced off, so the chance of human-elephant conflict is very small.
@ thank you
Are you planning on moving any more animals specifically elephants?
👍👍👍

I think an entire family kept together is wonderful but what happens when this matriarch who has her entire memory of where food , water, shelter & safe places from predators now has zero knowledge of these basic needs for her herd. Are you placing this entire herd in danger? Do you do a soft stage introduction? Or just leave them to their own demise?
