Cool comparison and I liked you giving your opinion at the end because you where right at the end of the day all that matters is the final art / product / song etc.
Great video as usual! I have both of these mics to review. I didn’t like the 103 on my voice. I also have the Townsend Labs L22 and I’m blown away by this modeling mic. It sounds much better than the 103 even without the modeling. I haven’t tested the 251 yet but will this week.
@@utilitydisk Its a nice sound but I prefer the Townsend Labs only because it’s easier to EQ but I tried the Warm Audio CX12 and was blown away but how good it sounds. I would get that one over the 251
My first reaction isn't even about the mics- I'm blown away by how much bigger and better the HA preamp is than the Antelope pres!!! That's a crazy difference in tone. As far as the mics, the 103 is very clear, but maybe a little too crispy on the highest top end. The 251 is a little more buttery in the full processed examples. The 103 is popping out of the mix a little more, so might be just right on a rap part, for example.
I just tried the TLM 103 on my voice (lot of low resonance) and didn’t like it at all!! Do you think the 251 might be a better fit or does it have a sort of similar tone to the 103 in your experience?
Sorry for the delayed response. I feel like the wa251 has a bigger low end than the 103. There’s no transformer in the 103 so the sound coming from it will naturally differ from the wa251. What tone are you trying to go for with your microphone
Hey Carl! Great video! I actually own both these mics and idk which one I prefer lol I like both for their own reason I would like to know what you think on these 2 mics and which you may prefer a bit more? Edit. Sorry just got to the part of final thoughts lol would like to know which you would pick to use if you could only use 1 lol
Thanks for checking out the video and commenting! Becuase of the multiple polar patterns, I’d choose the wa251. It would end up being a little more useful for all of the sources I capture. And there’s honestly a better chance to get 2 wa251’s over 2 TLM103s if cost is a factor.
@@CarlMooreMusic thanks for getting back Mr. Carl! Can I be totally honest ....I think I prefer the WA251 as well. I just didn't want to say the wrong thing on this thread where more experienced engineers can see my comment lmao. Thank you sir I'm subscribed as of a few months and am thankful for what you do. 🙏🏼
@@manuellujan5625 no problem at all! This process is full of subjectivity! Like honestly, if I had the choice between a u47/u48 and a u87, I’d choose a u47/u48 all day. First of all the format is fireeee. Lift every voice rendition was crazy too! I’d love to have either but I do feel like tlm103 sounded better on you to me. But this whole joint was on point
Man appreciate the kind words! I didn’t want too much talking before the content section of the video. The TLM103 gets so much flack but it’s a solid mic. And I feel like the right chain, good mic placement/technique, and source performance can yield solid results. Definitely appreciate you for checking out the video and commenting!
Format is really good. Like how you switched it up. Definitely getting a WA251 really soon, you sold it for sure!!! Can’t wait to make that mic sound even better!
I hear you man haha. I do think it offers something. Maybe I’m just partial because I like it but it gets crapped on so much like it’s a cheap mxl mic or something within that caliber and it’s not honestly.
@@CarlMooreMusic Man even my SW rep kinda crapped on it lol. Months ago, I told him I was looking to add a brighter mic to my locker and my wife and I were looking at the TLM103. In so many words he was like "uhhhh are you dead set on that mic, or are you open to other options that are way better?" 👀🤣
😂😂😂 - exactly what I’m saying. I honestly think if the price were sub $1k, or if it featured more pick up patterns, responses would be different. But I don’t think it’s a trash mic at all. I know I’ve had success with it lol.
@@manuellujan5625 Sony C-100 and OC818. But I actually just had the chance to get my hands on the TLM103 in my studio and the more I listen to the clips I recorded, the more I love this mic. I've never had a mic that sounds this massive and full in the low end, yet with a clear midrange. I was a baritone (borderline tenor 2) in choir so I don't have the bassiest male voice, but I recorded 6-8 inches away and my voice was coming thru my sub like crazy while still sounding clear on my headphones. I don't get that kind of fullness with any other mic except my SM7B when I'm right up on it, but then it sounds too dark and muddy so I would have to do crazy processing if I want it to sound clear & "modern." TLM103 just does it with no effort. Forget everyone who says the TLM103 is trash! Try one out for yourself if you can and come to your own conclusion!

Good video! I think the TLM-103 sounds more upfront, and a little bit harsher on the high end.

Thanks a ton. Too much time is spent in the wrong place.
Its heritage ha 73 good? Compare to neve?
Heritage Audio makes quality gear. I think it’s a solid interpretation of a 1073/British style preamp
Not only solid. Authentic as well
I bought ha 73 elite..its sound excelent..i cant record without it :)
I don’t record any vocals without my HA73 pres!

Not going to lie. The TLM 103 is overrated why? Because it’s a Neumann.
