Too much capping here, Curtis is the only one bringing real context and balance to the argument.
Although they finished 2nd over the last couple of seasons, Arsenal are not as close to Man City as the fans think they are.
We have to remember that Arteta threw away every other competition early to concentrate on the league, whereas City were still competing on all fronts, so they were more stretched.
Even though Arsenal had ONE job to do and they were ahead for most of the season, they STILL lost to Man City with an 8 point lead.
Same again season just gone, although Man City obviously got knocked out of the Champion League Quarters.
I think the jury is still out with Mikel and mainly his ability to eek out and manage strikers. He doesn't look like he's had any success in this area and needs to get this part right, as it's one of the most important areas on the pitch. I do think if Arsenal had a 25-30 goal a season striker, they may not have dropped the points they did.

@@ajbyatt1419 I normally go by the three strikes and you're out rule, every manager should have three seasons if it's clear they are making progress.
So that's two seasons on the bounce throwing away the other competitions and bottling the league when Arsenal were ahead.
For me, that cannot happen a third time.
So if Mikel makes more points than last season and fails to win the league, but wins another major trophy like an FA Cup, I'd give him one more season.
If he does same again forsaking all the other competitions and comes 2nd again, I think the club need an inquest from the top down, it won't just be a Mikel problem.

@@ajbyatt1419 It's difficult to say at this stage, because I don't know how much of the shortcomings are down to Arteta and how much of it is down to Edu, as far as transfers are concerned.
Based on what I'm seeing at the moment (or lack thereof), the pressure is certainly on, I can say that.
Arsenal need a good 9 players of quality for the squad in my opinion to be able to mount a challenge in all competitions and stand a chance of battling Man City for the league at the same time. The squad is way too thin and devoid of quality for me, too many players Mikel brought in aren't up to the standard, he doesn't even trust them.
Right now, I'm not seeing enough outs, they need to get their skates on with selling players they don't think are going to make it. That will go towards some of the transfer budget, but not seeing anything right now so how are they going to be buying all these linked targets?
So James your saying if Arsenal get the 3 - 4 starters get injured a fraction of the injuries United had this last season, your giving Arteta a pass. Why did you sack Wenger listening to these blokes.

Arteta is a lucky manager at this point of his Arsenal tenure, almost 5 years at present with only an FA cup to show for. I say lucky because if he ends up finishing 2nd again in the upcoming season behind City, then the season after that, Arsenal will win it. Apart from City, and with Klopp no longer around at Liverpool, Arsenal are the most established side out there in terms of the squad progression, consistency and culture. Once Pep leaves, which could very well be after next season, I see Arsenal dominating the league.
It doesn't work like that...at some time players will get exhausted of coming second and secondly you never know which team performs well given unforeseen circumstances like injuries etc

You are talking as if you are guaranteed to win the league next season or even guaranteed to come 2nd. In football there are no guarantees. Next season, Arsenal can even finish 3rd or 4th and no one is gonna care about your trajectory.
Trophies stay as part of history forever. In 5 years time, no one's gonna remember who came 2nd or how close the title challenge was. Tbh you haven't even pushed Man City to the limits. Liverpool have with 95+ points and still coming 2nd. And now no one cares about Liverpool's title challenge anymore.

What is the narrative of not being able to find a better replacement? If Arsenal don't win anything again next season, he has to go 100%. Just saying though that Mikel has proven he is one of the best managers at this level now in the the toughest league in the world. You cannot defend both Kroenke and Arteta at the same time after this season if you are logical. If Kroenke has backed Arteta then he has to win a trophy this season. If Arteta has not been back then Kroenke is not doing his job. You can't have both doing their jobs properly and still end up trophyless. If you only want good vibes then I understand in that case you will be better off admitting you don't care about trophies and you then lose the right to banter Tottenham for being trophyless.

Last season’s run was as good as it gets from any manager in the world but Man City put up an unreal run to win every single game after our draw. Unreal not in any complimentary sense. For the past 5 seasons they have not had any refereeing controversy cost them points but the opposite happens with their rivals Liverpool and Arsenal.
