🇬🇧 His debut recording devoted to Schumann offered a brilliant opportunity to discover the name of Samuel Hasselhorn, a young baritone deeply invested in the art of lieder. With his collaborator Joseph Middleton, he now turns to Schubert, in an insightful programme evoking some of the themes dear to the Viennese master of song: nature, night-time, parting, absence, and death. Both essential and less familiar songs are featured side by side in this poignant depiction of profound self-reflection that can rank among the most moving examples of what the Romantic temperament has ever produced.
🇩🇪 Mit einem glanzvollen ersten Album, das Schumann gewidmet ist, machte sich der junge, in der Welt des Lieds sehr bewanderte Bariton Samuel Hasselhorn sofort einen Namen. Nun wendet er sich mit seinem Partner Joseph Middleton überaus feinsinnig Schubert und dessen Lieblingsthemen zu: Natur, Nacht, Abschied, Einsamkeit, Tod. Neben unvermeidbaren Titeln sind weniger bekannte zu hören, und mit jedem Lied dringt man tiefer in die romantische Seele ein und erlebt die ergreifendsten Momente, die sie hervorgebracht hat.

Nacht und Träume (Night and Dreams) is the last television play written and directed by Samuel Beckett. It is a wordless play and the only sound is that of a male voice humming, then singing, from the last seven bars of Schubert’s lied Nacht und Träume. Schubert was a composer much loved by Samuel Beckett - "the composer who spoke most to him … whom he considered a friend in suffering" - and this particular song was one of the author’s favourites.

I am amazed as Samuel breath control. Perfect singing and beautiful piano playing on a fantastic Steinway and of course beautifully tuned and as another commentator said great sound engineer. Im reduced to tears at the ability of these two great artists to create beauty in music. Thanks Schubert without you we would not have such wonderful music.

Beautiful, singing and beautiful piano player. What kind of piano is it. The bass is so powerful it must be very hard to control. The piano is so beautifully tuned. The recording engineer is amazing - certainly one of the most interesting recordings ever. Amazing what great artists can do. Just when you think you have heard everything along come these two gentlemen. Thanks.

Warum aber wurde es in diesem leeren Gebäude aufgenommen? Der daraus resultierende starke Hall-Effekt des Flügels wirkt für mich echt störend..
