@@yuriysemenikhin302 As someone who has trained a lifetime in martial arts, including a few years of Aikido, I will say little will have changed depending on their level of training.
I'm not saying Aikido doesn't have it's merits. Its certainly does. In particular, it is beneficial to understanding multiple opponent defense and provides some leverage concepts that are helpful, particularly in correlation with atemi or kuzushi. However, it is mostly beneficial in it's philosophy which I enjoy greatly.
That being said, a well trained fighter would have little use for the low percentile application techniques that mostly comprise Aikido, or the starting point of defending relatively untrained opponents. It's like being a Marine, and going through Air Force boot camp. It won't hurt your training, but there isn't that much you will gain from it either.

I spent about 6 months training AIkido before I really started learning it. The lesson that really sunk in for me was cause by my fleeting desire to really strike my sensei. Now, I want to preface this by saying that I am not a violent person by nature and I've been quite a wimp most of my life. So taking aikido classes was already out of character for me. After 6 months of aikido I still wasn't trying very had and I was just there to get some exercise.
One day, however, after months of throwing half-assed wimpy, unenthusiastic punches I decided I was actually going to try to really punch my sensei. This was not out of a sense of wrath or even mischief. I was just bored of not trying.
I remember my sensei's face vividly. The moment he saw my intent, before I had really even thrown the punch, his face lit up like he was finally going to be able to throw someone for real.
I could never forget his face and that reaction was what taught the lesson for me.
    Aikido comes from the attacker.

6:10 I know this seems like a stretch, but when Shintaro Higashi talks about foot sweeps like kouchi gari, he often mentions taking a "cheat step", where you shorten your stance as you walk to gain the foot position you want. I thought of this during the discussion around shortening the stance. But really, any time you step, there's an opportunity to slide into cat stance (neko ashi dai? My Japanese is bad...), which is used in most Chinese martial arts to signify kicks, trips/sweeps, or just a shift in one's moment of inertia to perform techniques as seen above.
Also, I feel your pain with the distance management. I started with Taekwondo many years ago, so when I tried Jiujitsu, Hapkido, Judo, etc. I was always leaving way too much space and not getting the leverage or position I needed. It's funny how going from striking to grappling requires changing your perspective from distance between opponents to space between parts of the body.

Thanks, it's a good technique and he does it really well. I think there is a similar takedown in the Shotokan system (and other karate styles) where you step behind the opponent's front leg and sweep them - leg/hip behind and front arm/shoulder in front across the neck.

  • @popcornzbd

I'm a Shotokan guy. Years ago I took Aikido for about 5 weeks. It was completely foreign to me in how to move. You can't do Aikido and move like a karate guy. It's circular for one thing. Now however, I can see how some of that would blend in with karate. Just a few favorite things perhaps. Not too much. It would get confusing. I don't care if it would work in sparing. I've played with Aikido foot movements, which is important in Aikido, and I like the rhythm and pivots and how the movements feel. Has kind of a Chinese martial arts feel to it.

    • @popcornzbd
      @popcornzbd 3 года назад

@@carlosllanos4689 Aikido is wonderful. But mostly I think keep your Aikido and karate mostly separated or it gets confusing. There's always play time when you can experiment a little. As far as mixing Aikido in with karate when sparring, between karate and Aikido, you may have so many techniques running thru your head you'll stand there paralyzed. In karate, pick out 3 or 4 attack techniques that work for you - how your body moves etc. And perfect them. As far as defending against kizami tsuki, maybe just get out of the way. It doesn't have to be pretty. But don't just stand there. MOOOVE!! There's no rule in karate that says you have to move straight back all the time either. Just like you pick out a few offensive techniques to work on, you can also "focus point" a few techniques to defend against (2-3) and counter. Not in strict kata form. Sparring form. Which is loose.

    • @akulahawk
      @akulahawk 3 года назад +1

Yes. When you bait for a response, you're changing the OODA loop dynamics. When you provoke a response, it is YOU driving the timing, not your opponent. Boxers are really good at this. Aikidoka don't typically do this, so they stay reactive. Furthermore, look at the French guy's timing when he first demo'd this. Watch this frame by frame. He's initially defensive, but he didn't have to be. He could have provoked a response and done the same technique. Also watch his initial hand positioning. More like a boxer, just more relaxed hands.
He's very interesting to watch. He'd probably be really good at boxing if he wanted to try it.

Aiki-Jutsu was the combat style of the samurai. Thus like most military martial arts throughout history it was more focused (initially) upon aggressiveness and practicality. When Morihei Ueshiba founded Aikido, he took the Daito-Ryu Aiki-Jutsu techniques he had learned and stripped away the offensive protions and the aggresive attitude to develop a technique with similar focus upon use of Aiki but in a peaceful defensive manner. That was when the Jutsu became Do.

From that position there are a number of bjj, judo or wrestling techniques that are far simpler and more effective: grab your opponent in a body lock and do an ura nage or a drop sweep for example.

@@miriadestar3415 you're right, his throw looks a lot like some muay thai sweeps. The throws from a body lock still feel simpler to me cause it is an instinctual way of griping, controling and throwing your opponent, but I might be biased from my background. The fact is that when you have your opponent's back almost anything can work, the big problem is getting that position.

Just as a bit of detail: after deflecting the punch, try to have your palms up; doing so that will give your shoulder more freedom of movement and that will keep your posture straight. Having your palms down in this very context you actually block your shoulder that is in contact with your uke.

    • @kellypurdue1990

Agree. Having the palm down puts nage in the frame of using his elbow to push or strike. G Sensei pointed it out when he said it was all in your shoulders. Palm up allows nage to relax , drop the shoulder and have an upright posture which in turn allows the rotation on the axis of your spine. I think the most valuable insight here was the statement about not "Doing". When you DO your partner can sense your intent, they instinctively try and stop the DO and that is when you run into resistance. By DOING you actually give uke something to resist against , rather than moving WITH your partner.

  • @TheMrKazados

Ossu sensei! Having practised both Shotokan Karate and Aikido in the past, I really appreciate this presentation. Aikido and related arts got a lot of bad press in recent times, not least for teaching defences against 'overly stylized' attacks. Well, some of that criticism is warranted in my view, but then, the same can be said about other traditional martial arts as well. I always maintained that those Aiki principles are sound, and you guys demonstrate how they can be applied in a more dynamic setting. Excellent! Keep those videos coming! :) Cheers

This is Morote Uke from Heian Nidan in a less formalistic way,
u just recieve the attack with the negative movement, (in Hanmi),
then move ur hole body as a unit to complete the motion, (in Shomen!! please), without any force.
just like the Aiki practitioner demonstrated (with the chin lift, head feed like a loop or elbow in shoulder joint...etc.)
Shito Ryo Morote Uke for high,
Shotokan Morote Uke for lower punch or kick (I talk about the receiving part)
unfortunately most japanese karatekas today turn their hips always in the opposite direction and do everything with Hanmi, especially when it´s inappropiate
they even ride their bikes with hanmi so to speak;)
Morote Uke is such a case. It´s completed strong in Shomen in itself without extra force or muscles, but weak in Hanmi,
otherwise they look just like some Irish pub fighter from the 1800´s with a massive Nietzsche moustache and high pants over the belly button.
and almost all modern Karate practitioners shake their hips just for the sake of the hip wiggle
(without knowing when, why and wich direction), to come across more experienced
wich looks just like brazilian carnival dance
most seen by Kata Ballerinas, never known in the first place how to apply it, and the judges seems to don´t know ether cause the worse it gets, the higher the grades
    (some extra hints for good grades in Kata """"CoMpEtiTiOns"""" are;
stand extra deep, so u can´t move ur hips properly, specially westerners,
    scream extra loud Kiai
tense ur cervical tendon the hole time
    do everything with Kime
    completly rush trough
when slow motion shake and shiver ur muscles so it looks like an 80´s B-movie, to show ur exeptional talent
    ...
ok this was harsh, towards Ballerinas because Ballerinas have always to learn something new
Just imagine in the distant future son to father
son: Wow dad u have several black belts and won cups in Karate?!
    father: Yes, (smiles confident)
son: So u broke bricks or had beaten up hundreds of thugs?!
father: No I did Kata competitions
son: So u encoded the secret techniques and are capable to defend yourself and know how to apply the Oyo properly
father angry: No it´s just a meaningless dance with no connenction to reality whatsoever!!
son: So ur just a pretending **g
father beats son with kickboxing pointfighting skills, cause he hasn´t managed to gain a single effective application and has no trust in his art from his decades long experience...
    oh sorry I digress
anyways I´m glad you open ur mind to other martial arts, now try to integrade the Principals to ur Karate Katas, wich is allready a Martial Art, not just punching and kicking.
It was all there but disappeared when Karate changed from infighting and middle distance, to middle and long distance,
basicly Pointfighting Kickboxing with more screams.
Infact what the Aiki guy here is doing is in My opinion the way modern Karatekas should aim to
sorry to hurt someones feelings, just get better,
    thanks.

When people watch aikido demonstration they think it is bullshit because of cooperation and staged movments but those kihon teqhniques can teach you a lot about controling your body and how mechanisc works. If practitioner can understand it and modyfy it like tgis gentalman on video suddenly aikido starts to work.

Boxers, as an example, train with a combative mindset and when they spar, they do so with a combative intent. While I haven't taken an AikiJujitsu class, I suspect they train with this in mind.

Daito Ryu Aiki Jujutsu is basically the root of Aikido. The founder of Aikido softened the techniques and made them more round, while in Daito Ryu they are more brutal and direct. The Aiki principle is also slightly different. In Daito Ryu you bring in "Ki" to provoke a reaction and then reverse it and merge it (Aiki) with the"Ki" of your opponent. In Aikido you skip the first step and merge Ki directly.
