Notes:
Excellent for landscape videography. However I will always advocate for solving the problem on set whenever possible. Altering lighting, using a GND (when applicable) would always be preferable to the method shown in this video, however if it's not possible, then here's a solution for saving the shot in post.
I actually had a whole section in this video about GND's that ultimately got cut cause it kind of got away from the main purpose of the video. With the goal being to recreate RED's HDRX effect which is super cool, but ultimately having to remain stationary is a huge downside.
So did I trick you with the new feature I edited into resolve? If you've read this far try going back an taking another look at that section. I put a ton of little Easter eggs in there and impossible features.

Good advice Nathan, I do think that your image there is a great example, but in a lot of cases I see the problem arising from indoors with a bright window. With the window, the same principles apply and can even be tracked if the camera moves.
The rule of thumb should as you mentioned to use lighting - we always went by the rule of setting the exposure to that you can not control and then control the rest.

I've been doing this technique for years with me and my buddies back when all we had were budget 1080p DSLRs with barely any dynamic range. We would expose for a dark part of a room, then take another clip of the brighter part and stitch them together in Premiere. Its definitely a lot easier in Resolve with nodes and I still do this technique even to this day with a lot of our projects even when shooting in RAW or 10 bit if we have enough time. Its very easy to do once you get the hang of it as well. Masking is incredibly powerful and it always provides better results when trying to tweak the exposure for scenes and stuff.

If you have an irregular shape or if you have something walking in front you could also key the highlights to make the alpha mask

This shot looks vaguely familiar. ... Would I be far off by saying you were crouching underneath the deck of one of the unit of coop housing above Happy Valley I think it used to be called? Can't see the fuel farm on the peninsula though? lots of new building went up over there after I left in late 90's.
You're pretty much bang on. Not Co-op housing, but yeah that's the general area.

Doesn't look like a Rode NTK to me more like a Zoom H4n wired to your Camera for sync. Whist are you using for a POP screen?
Haha I forgot to change that in the description. Yeah it's an H4N and for a pop filter were using a rolled up sock (make due with what yah got eh). I'll be back in the studio for the next video with all my normal gear. I've been on the road for the past 6 weeks. Good catch

I'm happy my edit looked convincing, but no it's not real. If you check out the whole video, I go over how I achieved the effect, and why a slider like that wouldn't really be possible.

Are you talking about the slider I showed in the first 10 seconds or so?

@@alessio55555 so that doesn't exist. I actually popped up text explaining that. The result is achieved by the method shown later on in the video. A slider like that is pretty much impossible, if the details isn't captured by the sensor then you can't recover it.

That's such a stylised film eh? I feel like the way it was shot really helped give it such character, with most of it being shot on a 6.5mm giving some wild distortions.

Where do I even find a 6.5mm like that? How did they do it really? I mean that should've been totally fisheye, shouldn't it? Should it not be like a round image or something like so? It obviously not so how did they make it turn out the way it did on screen? The distortion is really tasty in the movie and the colours are real cool as well. I've done some research and apparently a filter for that sort of foggy effect is also needed for that look? However I watched a guy that did something similar like that filter in post using Da Vinci resolve.
@@sigvardbjorkman oh really? I'd have to do some more research then. With regards to the circular image, if the image circle projected from the lens is not smaller than the sensor (in this case super 35mm film) then you're good, however they may have to crop if there was vignetting.

I bought a used aps-c and I recently bought a used Speedbooster and am looking for a wide lens for Canon EF and my goal is to get close to the look in FA. I figure I can do a lot in post like maybe increase the distortion a bit etc.

Again Blanding over and under expo is not easy job it will not gonna sit in right and left part of image 😅 like the example
I totally agree that the use is limited. I go over some recommended use cases in the description. Static camera with nothing crossing the invisible line isn't super common, but with landscape shots or a blow out window that can't be helped with an onset solution (GND for the landscape, lighting change, or one of those sticky ND sheets for the window) then this solution could help get you out of a bind.
This could be super useful on real estate shoots where your trying to have inside nice and bright without blowing out the windows. I will try using robo slider or robo gimbal.
