After the Raptors started turning it around and started winning games to climb to be the 5th seed, he was a major piece in those wins. Him and Mobley defo created a thrilling finish to claim the award at the end of the season
Both he and Evan Mobley are going to go down as the best players in this draft class. Cade Cunningham will eventually be there too, but the versatility those two players have showed is unreal.
How yall not gonna show the fadeaway on blake and durant or the 4th quarter stepback three in the SAME game against the nets. Missed a lot of his best highlights.

It's not hard to see why Magic Johnson compared Scottie to himself.
And to think ESPN gave the Raptors a D+ when drafting Scottie Barnes. They said Raptors were the biggest disappointment of draft night lmao. Well.. if you already didn't think Masai was a genius after assembling that championship team in 2019... this should definitely help solidify that narrative.

To be fair, the grade was for the offseason not the draft. The comment was just that when we look back on it the most prominent decision Toronto made was taking Barnes over suggs the reporter wasn't wrong. But precious was definitely a better pick up than what was expected so d+ (or whatever it was) is probably unfair in retrospect.
That's not to say that Scottie hasn't surpassed people's expectations at this point. It's just a bit unfair to the reporter, considering this comes up a lot. The graphic is somewhat misleading though.
I think the draft night rankings look more at the individual and less at where they are chosen, so I think ESPN had like an a- rank or something for Scottie (I could be completely wrong though) Suggs' grade was definitely higher though.
@@Moomaster1616 That's entirely fair, though I still contend that plenty of people raised eyebrows seeing the Raptors pick Barnes over Suggs.
It's hard to see at first glance because FSU's system doesn't tend to give players as much of an opportunity to pad stats; it's easy to see middling stats and attribute it to middling play unless you watched FSU basketball that year. So much of that team's play ran through him even if it didn't lead to massive stats.

I keep forgetting he's a 20 year old rookie by the way he plays on the court. Such great awareness and can do everything on both sides of the court. Next year he will be an All-star and in a few years a superstar in the league. We are witnessing greatness.

hindsight is 20/20. Orlando is just a bad organization, and Suggs was injured a lot. put Scottie on the Magic and would he have gotten ROTY? Doubtful. Not saying Suggs would've got ROTY if he was on the Raptors, but Scottie wouldn't become the player he is without the Raptors development

Been a fan since before he played at the nightrydas peach Jam team, he’s a menace on defence and he’s continually becoming a better 3 shooter. Lethal in transition and he has phenomenal intangibles. Can’t wait to see what the future holds for this kid 😈

Scottie Barnes is going to continue to get better and better too. Any one of him, Cade, or Mobley could have won and still deserved it. All 3 have such bright futures in this league
His horizontal speed is nuts, really Giannis-esque. He doesn't quite have the vertical explosion, but his speed with his strength and vision is going to make him one of the best transition players in the league. He was awesome as a rookie and I think year 2 is going to be even more electrifying. Can't wait to watch the Raptors this year.

Of course, as an FSU alum, I'm incredibly happy to see Scottie win it, but honestly massive kudos to the rivalry that will no doubt form between the standout rookies from this stacked class. I can't wait.

I think when it comes to Scottie. There is a lot of factors that you gotta add up. For a player that is 6’7, 6’8. He moves differently. Not saying there aren’t others his size that don’t move like him. But the dude is 20. He had his “rookie” flashes this year. But not many compared to how many moments he didn’t look like one. Now everyone is gonna say “he played on a team with an All-NBA player, and a All Star, that’s why he’s so good”. Well simply put he’s good on his own. Quite a few games the Raps didn’t have either and Scottie stepped up. Even in games they had both Scottie stepped up and created his own shots, passes, etc.. I think we need to realize also Barnes was a 6th man coming off the bench at FSU. Which is wild to think about. So to most telling someone that a 20 year old, who came off the bench his 1st and only year in college on a team that really wasn’t sure what direction they were going in won rookie of the year and was a huge reason and huge help to lead them to the playoffs is crazy but it happened. Scottie has no ceiling all sky.
