Had the opportunity to test it yesterday and was amazed about the simplicity. The two/four buttons for aperture/speed/iso/wb are really awesome, really handy and easier to use than my d800 and previews 5d mkII
I don't get the rant against micro 4/3. I use my Olympus E-M5 M1 at work and have made a small test with the E-M5 and my 12-60mm Zuiko against our offices Canon 70D with the 24-105mm lens. And I have to say that my Olympus blows the Canon in terms of sharpness, color rendering and especially weight. I work as a journalist and let me tell you: Carrying a Canon 70D with the 24-105mm and an extra lens around all day is not good for your neck. I'm using the Canon sometimes, but honestly I'd much rather use my Olympus - so I do just that. I get that it's mostly subjective, and some will prefer the Canon bulk and the size because it makes them look more professional. It that's the case then by all means go for the Canon system. But don't go around saying that Canon or Nikon crop cameras has a better image quality than micro 4/3 'cause that really isn't true anymore.
+TrumpPalin2016 Wecandoit Thank you for your kind response. I especially appreciate you taking your time to compose such a nice and educational response. Thank you! I didn't say I made a scientific test. I made a small test with my E-M5+ Zuiko 12-60mm and our office Canon 70D with the 24-105mm mounted. If you don't feel that that's useful then feel free to ignore it. You're not quite spot on regarding the 24-105mm. It is a 24-105mm no matter what you mount it on. But you're right that when you mount it on a crop sensor body like the 70D it acts like a longer lens and you rougly have to multiply it by 1.6. But it's still very much a 24-105mm lens. Please feel free to respond because I love discussing anything photo related. But I'd really like it if you dialed the flaming back a notch or two. Thanks! :)

I have always thought that the Chinese guy doing these videos just want to show off himself in a very immature, narcissistic way. It's not about the cameras, it's about himself.
I'm that guy who takes pics with his mirrorless cameras, wifis them onto his phone, then instagrams the results. The ISO performance of these cameras are beyond good at this point that I completely stopped caring. IS, colour rendition (because I'm not editing RAWs on my phone), and usability are what matter.
Good review guys! I really like this shift in direction where the crass humour is used sparingly and more focused on the actual product review. Very good video. Keep it up DRTV!
Is he reviewing this camera against all other cameras? When I researched the omd series I was comparing it against all other M4/3 cameras, which makes much more sense. Compared to other M4/3 cameras in this price range, this is quite a good option. Fast AF. Great selection of Panasonic and Olympus lenses, solid construction, and a huge list of useful features. Did you guys know that if you have a 3.5mm male to 2.5mm male cable jack. You can use it as a shutter release cable. Probably their best video since Lok and Kia went and got a setup for $1k or less... and that's been a while. Everyone else shaming their video is clueless..
I used to be really interested in cameras and all... Then I realised it's ridiculous. There is a better camera every damn month... Always a better lens.. Always some better accessories... Buy a good and reliable camera once. Then save your money for something better than a super duper uber hyper mega amazing camera. ....and tbh: I have more than 6 (all different kinds of ) cameras at home and for the most time I use my iPhone. But if you buy a crap camera you'll be unhappy. The thing I realized is that they go forward in some things, but backwards in others. The older cameras were so much more intuitive and simple to use. And manual controls are a pleasure. Now with all plastic and electronic and menus so long you'd think they would win an award for it; that is not progress.
If you enjoy what you do, it shouldn't matter. You don't need a $$$$ camera, but unfortunately the notion of expensive camera=awesome image. I frequently go to B and H and the people who are buying Pro Cameras arent exactly type of people who use M, A, S and probably have less than 2000 actuation on their camera. The vast majority of people on this planet couldn't tell or care whether you shot that moment with a $$$$ or cheapo PS. You're better off using a PS or your smartphone cam. I have a cheapo Yashica film camera, d610, and LG G3 I use.
yeah, yeah, menus, blah, blah, blah. My guess is that 99% of users use the "Super Control Panel" that puts every important setting at your fingertips in a flash, including ISO. There is NO need to access the menus frequently. Live Comp mode is underappreciated, it's amazing for night time shooting.
Yeah, in the review, he's acting like he doesn't know of the SCP, and he probably don't. Took me around 4 minutes to figure that out... so don't conclude that the menus are a mess, they are not. (It would be true for the mft-cameras from around 2010 then, my old Olympus (Epl1 or smthn) was really inexplicable).
not being biased but honestly the olympus menus are way harder to navigate than most other cameras i used previously the scp is fiddly and honestly in my opinion the panasonic menus are way nicer to navigate *imo*
If you don't need FF, I challenge our Nikon fanboy reviewer to show me anything in the Nikon stable that rivals the IQ of the E-M5 II. Slap the 12-40 f/2.8 and a 25mm f/1.8 for a smaller, street shooting footprint and you have a setup thats hard to beat
Really digging mine. Fastest focusing camera I've ever used. It seeks a bit in the REALLY dark dark, but I have a similar problem with my XZ-1, but the mighty mite with a smaller sensor that is the XZ-1 is the primary reason I ever gave MFT a chance in the first place. (I know it's not, itself, MFT) I love the Oly color and the hype is real. The 12-40mm f/2.8 pro lens, and going pound for pound, it can't be beat for one lens solutions that produce professional shots. It fits with the 12-40mm lens and hood in the quick-access pocket on my regular backpack, which means I don't need an expensive backpack that screams out to people who might have bad intentions. This is not just the most versatile camera I own, since I've never owned any L glass in my EOS kit, and while there are a few special places where a larger sensor is just the thing, I feel quite confident that it takes the best pictures and video 95% of the time.
I thought this was a good review, mixing the drtv humor with actual useful information. Also agree with the assessment of the camera. I love my E-M5 (mk1) but certainly acknowledge that getting it set up to the point where it's comfortable to shoot with rather than a huge mess of bad menus takes a lot of fidgeting that most people just don't want to put up with. However once that point has been reached, the camera is lovely. The lens ecosystem is excellent (but the studio flash/trigger compatibility not so much). The IS is incredible and has to be used to be believed. Most important to me, it just feels a lot more fun to shoot than almost anything else. Maybe the X100 is more fun, but also more limited.
@ 0:46 - what is the character between "手" and "電話" on the sign behind Kai? Also, what does it mean? I am guessing something to do with telephone as 電話 is telephone in Japanese, but I don't know Cantonese. It could be "death-ray" for all I know.
. Press OK button during shooting - for ALL OMDs . . Don't be so reluctant to go with the faster, easier and more modern way of doing things and stop whining. . It brings up a simple, fast menu of all the common settings. .
Why does my camera go out of focus if I move toward a subject. I start at about 3 feet for the video and when i get to about 18 inches is is out of focus. But if I take a still image at 18 inches it is in focus. Ideas?
As an olympus m43 fanboy I'll readily admit when I first got mine the menu was like someone just handed me the Codex Gigas and said "have at it".... after shooting with it though I can use the menu system almost without looking.
Sorry, his reviews are getting worse. I used to enjoy him but he acts like he's doing everybody a favor. Certainly not a review I'll consider when purchasing a new camera.
Mate, I think you should retest the high-res mode before you brush it off. A friend of mine - a very experienced pro photographer - and I did a side by side test in his studio comparing the EM-5 Mk II and Nikon D810. Result? The under the right conditions - i.e. perfectly still camera and subject - the EM-5 MK II produces sharper and more detailed images than the D810
Sorry but you make this camera to be something it is not - bad. This is probably one of the nicest camera to handle and control. Sorry but you miss the plot hear.
Recently I recorded footage with Olympus OMD EM-5 II with wireless microphone and rode video micro, but there is a strong hum, even though while I was recording footage there was literally dead silence in the room. Anybody knows what could be the problem? It is really hard to change it in post :( HELP! pls
Kai, I would be careful with this claim that M4/3 is limited to 16MP you have stated this before on the PEN review. It would imply that APSC and FF are also limited to some absolute number. And the 20MP Sony 1” sensor in the RX100 at half the surface area of M4/3 is imposable. But as the RX100 does exist it demonstrates that M4/3 could reach 40MP, patent limitations notwithstanding. This is most likely the best stills M4/3 camera around, but with that said the price ($1,099 USD) is way too high. If you consider that you can get a full frame Canon EOS-6D for $1,399.00 USD that becomes a pretty bitter pill to swallow, albeit at much bigger size. And a Panasonic GH4 is $1,497.99 and actually offers 4k. Don’t get me wrong I am honestly considering this camera but I may hold off given the price. I know Olympus is losing money right now just not sure this is the right strategy. One of the claims of M4/3 was that because the sensor is smaller you could get more sensors from one wafer of silicon, and there by a much lower cost for the camera.
I'm undecided on this Olympus OM-D E-10 Mark ii and the Panasonic Lumix LX100. I know there's the obvious fact that the Olympus can have interchangeable lenses. I would use the 14-42mm lense. Any ideas?
Sounds pretty great. Take the old E-M5... then steal some of the stuff straight from the E-M1... now you've got something that looks nice on paper. Hell, I even like the new look of it and its layout. And remember... this gives you sensor stabilization, dare I say the best in its class, that's a really neat feat. You can throw on all your kinds of glass and have it stabilized. The 40MP is a bit of a gimmick, but you could do a little commercial photography with it. Buildings, skylines, products... stuff like that. However, what sparked my interest the most was the fact they seemed to have taken video very serious now, next to weather sealing and the IBIS it's their headline feature for the E-M5II. No more of that '30p only'. All the bells and whistles are there. Even a battery grip with headphone jack. But then... the video quality doesn't seem to be up to 2015 standards, or 2013/14 standards even. Such a pity. Because Olympus is the only one offering stabilization during video recording, which is a huge benefit for video shooters that shoot with old manual glass, third party glass with an adapter or focal reducer or cinema glass. I was so close to purchase this and ditch my E-M1, but for now... I'm holding off and hope that the GX7's successor will be the next best thing.
Is it stealing if they are just taking features form their previous cameras and putting it into their new ones? This camera isn't meant to replace the E-M1. My guess is there will be a E-M1ii next year or late this year. Until then there will be some confusion as to which one is "better". It depends on which features are most important.
nitehawk86 Well, no, it's not stealing. Or... is it? Takes a bit the wind out of the sails of the E-M1. So, it's like selfharming. Yes, there's no PDAF, like Kai mentioned... can you live without it? Hell yeah you can, it's still darn quick. It's weatherproof, but has quite the level of built of the E-M1. I don't know about you, but if the camera's not up for it, then for sure long before it lets down, I give up, because I'm not a fan of cold and bad weather, so I won't be shooting in those kind of conditions. The E-M5... has the better 5-axis IBIS. Has the vari-angle display, has the more seriously aimed video features, whereas the E-M1 is 30p only (although, doesn't mean the E-M5 is much good at it, eventhough it mentions it's for cinema quality professional level movie making). Has the 40MP (~ 60MP RAW) geeky function. Oh and comes in quite a bit cheaper than the E-M1. You get the E-M1 if you prefer: the slightly better built with deeper grip and stills focussed featureset with PDAF and fast burst. Other than that, I think the E-M5II actually offers more now... well, on paper. I had it on pre-order because it sounded exciting, but in reality doesn't meet the expectations. I know the E-M5II is not here to replace the E-M1, Olympus want their flagship to be known and used on stills, not suddenly getting pushed in the video corner. So, in addition to the E-M1 stills flagship, they now created a video, although they don't use the word video anymore so: 'movie' flagship with the E-M5-line. That's also why I don't think the E-M1II will be killer for video. They'll keep it for the stills shooters. Anyways. It sounded like Olympus was finally 'in the game' what video concerned. Their press release pointed out the E-M5II was movie oriented, made to shoot professional level cinema quality movies with. Yes, it ditched the 30p only, but the image is somewhat soft/lacks detail and if there's a bit of detail there's lots of moire/aliasing going on. The crop gets to around 2.7x. Stabilization works awesome when it works awesome, but sometimes it does some tricky stuff and creates weird warping and all. The actual quality seems to have taken a step backwards instead of forwards. So that's why I'm hoping for a GX7 successor with stabilization during video recording. For the time I will just have to do with my E-M1 and accept the 30p limitation. And then I still additionally have the GH4, GH2, BMPCC, D5300, LX100 and FZ1000 to play around with. So, I'm not stressing out. But I would appreciate a M43 camera that did in-body stabilization during video really well and with great image quality. We'll see.
***** You have a good point there. I have been thinking about a replacement for my EP-3, and now I dont know if I want an E-M1 or an E-M5ii, since the M1 is still way more expensive, But unless you have regular 4/3s from an Olympus DSLR, you dont get PDAF anyhow. Maybe I'll just open up the checkbook and get an a7-something instead. :)
nitehawk86 That A7S surely intrigues me personally... but fairly heavily invested in the M43 system, so hardly any compatible glass to throw in front of that Sony full frame. Besides, full frame glass is bulkier and heavier and bodies (5DmkIII) usually quite a bit as well, I need to be able to keep it silly compact. That I can do with Panasonic and the likes...
***** Yeah, I have some time before I have to make a decision. I think I might rent an A7s and give it a try before deciding anything. I have never used a full frame DSLR before, always crop sensors.
Could you do lens comparison between Panasonic and Olympus? I am planning to buy EM5, but still do some research which lens should I buy beside the normal kid lens 12-40mm between olympus and panasonic. Thanks
I have an Olympus OM-1 myself with a 28mm lens. I would like to buy a 50mm but I don't no which lenses I should look for or which lenses would fit the body of the OM-1. Can you help me please? thank you!
isn't the Super Control Panel on by default these days? makes Olympus cameras far easier to navigate if not some of the easiest with the very responsive touchscreen that most of their cameras have. if it hasn't, Olympus should finally sort that out and their reviews would instantly get even better.
aiyoh. After Kai Man Wong has been reviewing Olympus DSLR and mirrorless models and Lok has been an owner all these years, they don't immediately turn on Super Control Panel before starting use. SCP on the E-M5 Mark 1, E-M10, E-M1 is now activated by the button next to the viewfinder that looks like a classic CRT icon. Unlike other brands that have a similar screens, each of the icons on the SCP can be activated by the Ok button and you are immediately adjusting the parameters you want.
hey, I am looking to buy my first camera to go travelling with and thinking of getting the Olympus OM-D E-M10 II model.. Love your channel and thought you would know if this a worthy decision or do you have any other recommendations? Many thanks :)
William Yu Fall 2015 at the earliest. Depends on the competition and where sensor tech is at at that point. Latest rumors point to some sort of sensor refresh. Panasonic is already starting that way with their latest high end video cameras so it's possible will see it trickle down to still cameras like the EM1 mk2.
Guys this is suppose to be my first camera. All my friends and family have canon or Nikon and tbh I want to be unique I want to try new things. All I want this camera to do is to be on par with Canon or Nikon camera at the same price range! So should I get this or just get what almost everyone is getting *Canon and Nikon* Thanks!
I'm sure it has been said, but this camera *does* have face detection. By the way, will Kai's face crack and go to pieces should he ever say something nice?
The a6000 doesn't have a jack for an external microphone and the D5300 won't let you change aperture while recording, so I think the T4i may be the best choice of those three.
I want this camera badly! Arguably one of the best evfs you can get. Same with the ibis. Olumpus knows how to design a beautiful and very capable camera. If I ever go for m43. It will be this camera. All I would love for them to add is AA filter simulation so we can choose not to have it.
on AUTO mode ,pictures i took is not screening at all but in any other mode it is and 2nd the software came with the camera is not collates , in the very last step of installing it say s one thing is wrong try again
Actually yes, Kai, the looks are one major factor for people buying this camera!! I think, this is an absolutely beautiful camera!
I realize it is quite randomly asking but do anybody know a good site to watch newly released series online?
@Dwayne Phoenix Meh try flixportal. You can find it through google :) -wilson
@Wilson Kingston Thank you, I went there and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :D Appreciate it!
@Dwayne Phoenix No problem :)

Yeah! plus the 14-150 mkii, it really blows!
(my first m43 cam though coming from the 7D).
And! He's jealous coz he can't grow facial hairs. ;P
how have you found it for shooting moving objects?
Does the retro-inspired Olympus update bring enough new features to make this nostalgia trip worthwhile?

wont you shake the camera pretty much when you pull out the plug? but i guess its a fun party trick.
No because the wire is about 3 ft long.
ah, so every self og group shot you have, you can see you pulling a cord off of your phone?
Quick shot, I just make a contact of the jack to my phone to release the shutter but bulb mode won't stop until I unplug the jack

This is not just the most versatile camera I own, since I've never owned any L glass in my EOS kit, and while there are a few special places where a larger sensor is just the thing, I feel quite confident that it takes the best pictures and video 95% of the time.
Hey Kai! Enjoy your vids. Reading through some comments, there are soooo many clueless people here. Anyway, thanks!
"For a photographic device, *for micro four thirds*, it's really rather good." lol anyone else notice what Kai did there?
"At least it doesn't look like a pentax mirrorless camera." best thing I've heard all day.
If Alamby isn't coming back you need to get another cute production coordinator
Nice touch with the black and blue dress :)
I need help in between choosing this camera or the Fuji Xt1
Yay, an Olympus review
@ 0:46 - what is the character between "手" and "電話" on the sign behind Kai? Also, what does it mean? I am guessing something to do with telephone as 電話 is telephone in Japanese, but I don't know Cantonese. It could be "death-ray" for all I know.
That is a pretty clever bag, I must say.
.
Press OK button during shooting - for ALL OMDs .
.
Don't be so reluctant to go with the faster, easier and more modern way of doing things and stop whining.
.
It brings up a simple, fast menu of all the common settings.
.
Now that I noticed, that is one awesome Olympus bag. I want one. :-)
Love your snarky reviews! And the tour...where is this?
Why does my camera go out of focus if I move toward a subject. I start at about 3 feet for the video and when i get to about 18 inches is is out of focus. But if I take a still image at 18 inches it is in focus.
Ideas?
As an olympus m43 fanboy I'll readily admit when I first got mine the menu was like someone just handed me the Codex Gigas and said "have at it".... after shooting with it though I can use the menu system almost without looking.
That bag was pretty cool. The camera was ok too haha
Loved your review and candidness!
Amongst my favourite episodes
It's a great camera I am using it in India thanks to olympus
Sorry, his reviews are getting worse. I used to enjoy him but he acts like he's doing everybody a favor. Certainly not a review I'll consider when purchasing a new camera.
Mate, I think you should retest the high-res mode before you brush it off. A friend of mine - a very experienced pro photographer - and I did a side by side test in his studio comparing the EM-5 Mk II and Nikon D810. Result? The under the right conditions - i.e. perfectly still camera and subject - the EM-5 MK II produces sharper and more detailed images than the D810
What do you recommend for both photos and videos with great image stabilisation and also compact?
Panasonic GX85?
Can you do a video on best cameras of the year? Or best beginner camera?
Damn dude, way to taint this review with your bias against Olympus m4/3 cameras
eah, he should say it is great whether he thinks so or not.
Olympus OM-D E-M10 review please
can u tell me tht nikon is good or canon . which one of this is good to buy ☺and which one is durable for long time
Really missing the old day HK!
Cool, little camera!
2:50 You should've known where the iso button was before the review! It's not an unboxing, is it?
I'm undecided on this Olympus OM-D E-10 Mark ii and the Panasonic Lumix LX100. I know there's the obvious fact that the Olympus can have interchangeable lenses. I would use the 14-42mm lense. Any ideas?
EM10ii now, or wait for the "LX200" to be released & then compare.
So this camera can take black and white pics off the bat without using photoshop because i really want a good bnw cam haha
It depends on which features are most important.
nitehawk86
Well, no, it's not stealing. Or...
nitehawk86
That A7S surely intrigues me personally... but fairly heavily invested in the M43 system, so hardly any compatible glass to throw in front of that Sony full frame.
I have never used a full frame DSLR before, always crop sensors.
will it be ok for DRtv to review the Olympus 75 mm f1.8 ?
EM 10 Mark 2 still works for me
Olympus has always made interesting cameras but I think there are other on the market that I'm more interested in.
not a bad little camera!
0:58 Now camera looks amazing
Does this camera heat up when shooting?
You found the dress! Nice!
Now review E-M10! Review the entire Olympus product line!
Could you do lens comparison between Panasonic and Olympus? I am planning to buy EM5, but still do some research which lens should I buy beside the normal kid lens 12-40mm between olympus and panasonic. Thanks
Compare what... all the lenses?
Personally I recommend the 45mm Olympus.
thumbs up if you love old style digitalrevtv videos like this
I have an Olympus OM-1 myself with a 28mm lens. I would like to buy a 50mm but I don't no which lenses I should look for or which lenses would fit the body of the OM-1.
Can you help me please?
thank you!
why there is no omd Em10 m ii review ???
isn't the Super Control Panel on by default these days? makes Olympus cameras far easier to navigate if not some of the easiest with the very responsive touchscreen that most of their cameras have. if it hasn't, Olympus should finally sort that out and their reviews would instantly get even better.
Yup, took me a while to find it in the EM-1 menus.
Unlike other brands that have a similar screens, each of the icons on the SCP can be activated by the Ok button and you are immediately adjusting the parameters you want.
you should compare the Om-D EM-5 to the OM-D EM-10
Guys I'm stuck which do I buy EM1 or this one... Help me
I'd love to see a review of the Samsung NX1
hey, I am looking to buy my first camera to go travelling with and thinking of getting the Olympus OM-D E-M10 II model.. Love your channel and thought you would know if this a worthy decision or do you have any other recommendations? Many thanks :)
Should I wait for e-m1 mk2? I heard it might be fall this year...
They still won't have 4k because of the sensor shift
William Yu
Fall 2015 at the earliest.
So should I get this or just get what almost everyone is getting *Canon and Nikon*
Thanks!
Please do one on EM10 mk2 when it's out
Does it have a jack for an external microphone?
I'm sure it has been said, but this camera *does* have face detection.
By the way, will Kai's face crack and go to pieces should he ever say something nice?
I am considering getting a new Olympus M4/3 camera. Would you recommend EM-5 mark II, or the new EM-10 mark II?
Will it be a review of Pentax K-S2?
Is the upgrade from em5 mark 1 useful? Is the fuji xt 10 better
Love the Frozen reference
what is you gyes opinion on the panasonic fz 200?
my olympus OM-1 just broke so I'm looking for a replacement but damn there really is nothing like it
Hi Kai! As the new 24MP canon EOS 750d and 760d have been released could you do a vid comparing those two to older models like the 18mp 700d? cheers!
Hey, I'm on a budget and i want to get my first camera for video. i'm thinking the T4i, D5300 or the a6000. which do you think i should get?
The a6000 doesn't have a jack for an external microphone and the D5300 won't let you change aperture while recording, so I think the T4i may be the best choice of those three.
What's wrong with the Pentax Q?
Oh sweet I was just thinking of buying the first version. Now I'll just buy this instead.
A Nikon D5500 review is coming soon???? looking forward to it!!!!
4:41 - old asian woman version of Bill Nighy
Hi, what is the best vintage camera for a beginners? Thank you!
I like the FujiFIlm XT1. Aside from looking vintage and awesome, the photos are unbelievable!
Lok how do you keep your shots so Smooth when following in reviews?...I have tried this but doesn't work as well, was just wondering?
I wish they would send me one for a review:)
So I am debating between the Pen F and this one..style aside I feel you prefer this one?Thank you.
how much is the camera ?
I want this camera badly!
Arguably one of the best evfs you can get. Same with the ibis. Olumpus knows how to design a beautiful and very capable camera.
If I ever go for m43. It will be this camera. All I would love for them to add is AA filter simulation so we can choose not to have it.
on AUTO mode ,pictures i took is not screening at all
but in any other mode it is and 2nd the software came with the camera is not collates , in the very last step of installing it say s one thing is wrong try again
Do the em-10 mark 2!
