    "Take Five"
From the album Time OutTakes (Previously Unreleased Takes from the Original 1959 Sessions)
    The Dave Brubeck Quartet
    Dave Brubeck, piano
    Paul Desmond, alto sax
    Joe Morello, drums
    Eugene Wright, bass
"Take Five" written in 5/4, was a time signature so new to jazz that The Dave Brubeck Quartet abandoned it on the first of three recording sessions.
It's fascinating to hear on this track that the iconic drum beat wasn't set yet and Joe Morello was playing a very syncopated Latin beat. Even alto saxophonist, Paul Desmond, had not yet settled on a consistent melody. Brubeck was playing the famous piano vamp in order to hold the piece together along with the glue provided by Gene Wright on bass.
It was supposed to simply be a tune that would feature the drums. This version from "Time OutTakes" explodes with one hell of a drum solo, longer than the original hit single, proving why Joe was considered one of the very best drummers in jazz.

studied with Joe...his musical interpretation and technique were just magnificent! one of my favorite parts of this solo is hearing him playing underlying fast 8ths at pianissimo on his bass drum while improvising over the top! towards the end of his career, i used to hear him at Shanghai Jazz in Summit, NJ. now imagine sitting at a table just ten or fifteen feet away watching him and his killer left hand technique! . i'm so happy to have had the opportunity to spend hours of my time with him just absorbing his wisdom. miss him every day...

Pure art! Thanks for this. Gives you an idea of how rhythmic Joe Morello was. Honestly, this version would've been amazing performed live!

I love "lost tapes!" The tunes sound so different in the exprimentation phase than they do in the final versions released on the album!

Totally agree. Also, just knowing that even brilliant artists still need to work out the bugs of their music while iterating to the final versions we all know and love. SImilar works-in-progress clips are available from artists as varied as Springsteen and The Beatles. It's like watching an artist do their pencil sketches when all you've seen are the final paintings. Fascinating!

They're all amazing! Such talent... I saw Herbie Hancock & ensemble perform this live. I think of that performance more often than I care to admit. It was transcendent.

One of the most musical jazz drummers. Dave’s whole band was like that. And i know its sacrilege but i think they were more talented than the miles/coltrane/garland crew 😬

Amazing---THIS solo by Joe is ""straight eighths"" not swing, triplet based....completely different (and longer). I wonder if they were told to make a RADIO FRIENDLY version that fit the time restriction on the version we all know and love? Orignial was 5:24, this one clocks in as 5:48

In an interview, Teo (the producer) said he received a phone call from Paul Desmond shortly after Take 5 became a big hit single. Apparently, Paul told Teo that he'd edited and released the 'wrong take'. Perhaps Paul meant this one! Although, it seems like an earlier take because Paul is missing those flourishes at the end of each phrase in the A section.
