Many people think that interventions in the market, effected through a top-down approach, will produce the desired results (and only the desired results). While Bastiat has refuted this claim quite a while ago, with Thomas Sowell warning us not to take "the word for the deed", the lesson is often forgotten. This video is a gentle yet entertaining reminder, that promises made by administrators, planners and regulators, will not necessarily have the intended effect...and most likely lead to unintended consequences.

Can you give an example of a country where there hasn’t been top down intervention in the market?

No. And the problems keep piling up because of it...anyway...point being?

    • @Marty72

Alex Müller The point is that top-down power is inevitable. What separates governments is the quality of the intervention.

      Martin
Don’t see why it should be inevitable. Also I don’t care for quality distinctions on such a bad level. In the meantime, practicing agorism takes me out of the loop quite well, so those who actually advocate for this kind of stuff can engage without me. Fair enough, I would say.

I agree with the sentiment of your argument, but struggle to see how it would take shape, but hope it does.

I think the word "Socialism" has negative connotations to many. It's not useful to use this term to try and vilify any government intervention. There is nothing wrong with a mix of free market and some intervention. Most countries operate with both. A country like Australia, New Zealand, Denmark and many others do well with a combination.

People complain that capitalism "does not work", but the truth is that whatever does not work is because the capitalistic system is not allowed to actually function. When the state intervene with rent control, too many regulations like for example "not allowed to build close to the sea", or not allowed to build on this and that land for reasons that is literally unknown to anyone then yes, the system does not work but itæs not because of capitalism but because it's not enough capitalism.

Mr. Atlee's government's nationalization of the Railways, the Coal Mines and the Steel Works was a scam by the wealthy. These industries had been starved of capital during the war (and in the case of the Railways before the war, thanks to the imposition of regulation of the fares they could charge), and after six years of intensive use, they were worn out. The owners of these businesses couldn't re-equip them, because credit wasn't available for them to do so. Therefore, they faced being uncompetitive in the marketplace, with the eventual prospect of bankruptcy. What to do? Why not sell the businesses to the state while there was still value left in them, and thereby hand the problem to the government while disappearing oneself over the horizon with the proceeds, giggling manically?

and my criticism of this video......your soap box of "de-regulation" is the reason why subprime loans were so abundant which eventually caused the housing bubble to burst. De-regulations also allowed those subprimes to be "secure" and "safe", and those debts were sold with regular ACTUAL SAFE debt. When the subprimes ballooned, and the borrowers were unable to keep up with the rising adjusted payments, those loans became default and all the cards of the house toppled over. Although I'm not a fan of price fixing, in a world with finite material and ecological balance being threatened, you have to admit that British intervention helped their country and their economy, as well as with the rest of Western Europe. And the USA was also VERY SOCIALIST as well with FDR's policies investing in people and infrastructure......thanks to the millionaires that agreed to pay higher tax rates in meetings with FDR. Also,....you are aware George W. Bush's grandfather was a literal pro-corporation fascist who tried to overthrow the government? Well looks like the fascists infiltrated your party, conservatives, because you elected two of his descendants.....and they ARE and REAP BENEFITS of the corporate lobby, and you are spewing out what they told you in their echo chamber.

The reason why there was all-out lending for house loans is the American 1990s policy of every American should have a house. This is the facto reason why banks went into such high-risk lending since they were covered by the government itself.

    • @zebraheem
      @zebraheem Год назад

Oof I'm not sure you're correct on what was the first domino here. The Community Reinvestment Act ensured people who shouldn't be getting loans were getting loans. Forcing banks to give out loans otherwise they would be discriminatory. No one system works for too long. They all fail. The best solution is to be fast in changing to the needs of the people. Smaller leaner governments can accomplish this. It may well be sometimes we need a socialist policy and sometimes we may need a capitalist policy. And then we shut the policy down as quickly as possible and try other avenues. But that's what the founding fathers foresaw and gave us the ability to have small governments.

oh god.....the rent control thing? You established that people coming in and securing apartments brings the price up on rent because of demand driving up the market price......right? WHAT RENT CONTROL DOES is it LOCKS those rent prices (at the that time's market value) for LEGACY RENTERS, because the owner is not paying mortgage prices that keep going up as demand and market values increases. That's not how mortgage works. They are steadily paying their PITI at very stable rates which dont go up in proportion to what the currently value of the property is. So in short.....you're blaming people simply for being tenants for the rising rent prices. EVEN IF these tenants were paying renewed lease contracts at every updated market value, the area would still be in high demand and it rent prices go up regardless. GOD YOU'RE SO DISHONEST. There are even people that have done paid their mortgage and can afford to collect rent under what they used to pay on their monthly mortgage.....because that is all profit....but they also have the "right" to update their rent price because of appreciated market values (which if someone locked a mortgage on them after that appreciation, they would be paying WAY MORE than what the past owners in question did). So you're trying to justify LEGAL price gouging, where they can charge tenants NEW "Mortgage PITI rates" as opposed to the old one which was a fraction, let's say, 20 years ago. And if they paid off the property.....theyre just taking all that money.

This a deliberately biased video or the producers should be better informed before standing up on their soapbox.
First the title is misleading. "Third way" is used by all kinds of groups proposing an alternative to capitalism/socialism. The most helpful meaning is an economy that is created by the people producing for their own needs.
On the question of housing. It is ignorance not to know that costs go up with demand because desirable locations are a fixed supply. The solution is collection of location values instead of taking industries that would produce more houses in less desirable locations + infrastructure (roads, schools, hospitals, etc.,), making the location desirable.
Bad faith? by emphasizing how bad centralized regulation is, you are suggesting that total deregulation would NOT create serious social problems.
