I just discovered this channel... Sarah is the a rock and roll reviewer imo... you go girl... Being an old vw bug enthusiast ive always been a fan of the box er engine and Subaru
The best thing about the Forresters, all of them, is the visibility. All the glass. I used to have a bugeye wagon, so that is my standard for what visibility should be.
Awesome review! One small thing is that it's 60/40 normally but sends up to 50/50 depending on conditions (and will always be 50/50 on loose dirt, snow, etc). I definitely recommend Jason at Engineering Explained's video on Subaru AWD systems if anyone is interested!
I came across you this morning when I got into my office at 6am and it is now 1:50pm and I'm still watching! I think I'll get to work and maybe get something done! Thanks
This Forester looks the part of a wilderness vehicle and I was very impressed it tackled Mt. Sarah. Very fair scores… you do good at keeping your bias in check. Thank you! 👍👍👍
@@joebuck4496 The head gasket issue has long been in the rear view mirror. Not that many years ago, Toyota had a very popular engine in hundreds of thousands of vehicles that burned oil at low mileage, yet Toyota is still the leader in perceived quality. Every manufacturer hits a bump in the road now and then.
Subaru knew that was going to be a press car and they saved money anywhere they could, because that's what makes them so great lmao I'd love to see a video on the new WRX with your new format!
Just got mine . I can not believe it went up that hill😱. I actually thought that was a setup to fail. I can’t wait to get mine off road. Im actually trying to baby it for the first 1,000 miles. Nice review.
Sarah's hair curtains her face during braking, hilarious! Your editing and camera work are fantastic! Kudos to you. I so appreciate each and every episode. I look forward to many more hours of content and watching.
One of my favorite videos. Your expression during braking and vehicle description is the best. I would buy one in a heartbeat if they offered a turbo. Will hold on to my 2017 until then.
I haven’t chuckled this many times during a car review in a while. That was a pretty awesome review. I’d watch you review drywall at this point with the quality of your input. Awesome video lol
Yea! Carbon blast Forester video sounds awesome. I bought the same white XT you own last year and love her! its my 3rd Subie and I learned to rebuild my first engine with an 02 OB H6.
Love the ASMR reference and the gold sparks as you tap varous parts! nice touch! and you are soo right about the gold wheels matching the gold trim, probably why you have gold sparks LOL!
Ordered mine. I have a 21 Crosstrek and traded it. If I want a heavy duty off-road vehicle I have a 2014 Tundra limited. This is a nice upgrade to their previous Forrester. A great cross country vehicle
Wow...what a cool video, Sarah. Lots of things to like. Sparks flying from your fingertips is one. The car, perched with the front wheel two feet off the ground is another. I also like the fact that you test all off-roaders on the same hill. With a rear locker and all terrain tires, this Subie would probably go everywhere. I want to see your video on walnut blasting, too. I have three cars with direct injection and want to see what goes on that process. Keep up the great work.
Was there ever a walnut blasting video? I am going to need to do this on my '15 XT soon, and definitely don't want to go to the dealer to get them cleaned... again. In Sarah we trust!
Just watched Driving Sports TV compare this to a Jeep Compass in snow. Subaru made it up a hill with 12” of snow where the Jeep couldn’t because the awd over heated.
Its nice after a long day at work from being yelled at from corporate, or customers, to come home and watch a nice video from Sarah. Its nice to end the day on a high note.
Loved the review, Sarah (especially when you chided Subaru for the engine bay's overspray, no hood struts, and weird gray color on the inside of the hood). Also love those plaid colored heels (and how gorgeous you look overall!). :)
Sarahs descriptions are some laughs! I enjoyed the review and keep it up!"I still dont think its smart for them to have a open diff " Brake torquing doesn't make up for it.
I found your channel back when I was researching vehicles myself. I ended up with a very clean 2015 Forester XT, which now has 133k+ miles on it. To be honest I won't be buying another Subaru do to my experience. I have had the induction cleaning performed and my check engine light comes on between every 10-15k miles and the codes are always the O2 and Fuel/Air sensors. Because of the cost of replacing them that often ($300+ each), I pull and clean them which actually last just as long as new ones. My biggest complaint, I had to replace the CVT transmission because the front differential went out. It part of the whole transmission assembly and it wasn't cheap.....$8k ! I was at 115k miles, 15k past the powertrain warranty
Wow. I really didn't think it would make it up that. I would put on more aggressive all terrain tires after the factory ones wore out, after getting it. ( if I bought one)
I will pass on the entire unit in favor of my body-on-frame 4X4 which has a turning circle that makes this Subaru thing look like a 1970s Lincoln Town Car. I also will own NO 4X4 that doesn't have locking hubs and a MECHANICALLY controlled transfer case.
15:43 for your rating I like the animation personally I would love to see a little animated cartoon Sarah pointing at the beans/ cookies/ spanners Vanna white style or even pulling it on and pushing it off the screen😆

Skynet reference... +1,000...T1000 of course. :) Thanks for the great video! Wife has Forester Sport and is considering Forester Wilderness. This was both educational and super fun to watch! :)💯
Sarah......As a retired camera jockey, an off color lab coat might look a bit better, as would a wall that is something other than white. Both would add a bit of depth to the scene. Not sure you could be made to look any better.😎 Maybe some car posters?
Great review, you called it right, and I too have been feeling sad for Subaru. I had a WRX Wagon once, and it was fast and fun. And if you keep testing climbing abilities on your favorite hill, it will be worn down to a bump.
The future of all wheel drive, is each wheel having its own hub motor. This also eliminates having breaks, as the motors would provide that function as well. The fastest EV in the 90's was this Citroen looking 8 wheel direct drive, made by a university that clocked at over 400 mph. The batteries alone cost over $100K USD to build by the university.
I agree totally with you Sarah. Idk how Subaru, much less any major car brand can make themselves stand out in a sea of ev boringness. Subaru is unique because of the boxer and symmetrical awd.
Just once I'd like to see you do an brake test with someone behind you and then get out and ask them what they thought about your test vehicles stopping ability
I can hardly wait for your review of the Crosstrek Wilderness when it comes out. At the moment, that is the car I want to get next. As far as Subaru's EV future, I really hope they put independent motors on each wheel for a full-time 4 wheel e-drive. No diffs needed at all. That smile on your face when WilderGump made it up the hill! I could have sworn I saw "I want one of these" flash in your eyes.
Yep A nice review on a nice car. We want a turbo version SUBARU. You have the tech. Also dual muffler exhaust would be nice. .Same on the Forester Sport. That non cut out valance cutout on the drivers side bugs me. with just one outlet.
That articulation is a little sad.... but it did what it was supposed to. I've done the walnut blasting on a mini cooper.... no fun. Then found another method of feeding a can of Seafoam slowly into a vacuum hose on the intake. With about an 1/8 of a can left dump it in and kill the motor. Let it sit for a while and they start it up and watch the white smoke billow out of the exhaust. Worked everytime.
Awesome that the Wilderness Gump made it up the hill! But now I'm super confused why the Outback Wilderness couldn't make it up the same hill. I mean the slight increase in weight should've been handled by the higher HP and lower gear ratio in the CVT, I'd think? Do you think you might get another OBW in future at some point to re-test the hill?
So JonDZ Adventuring did a video on that. Apparently the transmission on the outbacks reach their stalling point more quickly than the transmission on the foresters.
Sarah, I want to start by saying: love the shoes! Or better the boots! These softroaders won't see any sand in their life, so the open diff, the whole AWD system, or even the ground clearance are totally redundant. The thing you pointed at at the rear brakes has nothing to do with the torque vectoring, since that was the electronic parking brake actuator. The stiffer the rear anti-roll bar is on high vehicles like this, the more that vehicle is prone to roll over, funny enough. The plastic covering underneath the car is for aerodynamics (read fuel consumption) only and do nothing in the even of rock-sliding. It will break to pieces, just as fast as the cardboard variant (or the 1mm alloy formed plate up front) will buckle.
I just put some geolanders on my parents Ascent. They made a huge difference on the off-road capabilities. I was looking at going with a smaller rim for a fatter sidewall but Subaru has a large offset that is hard to find and you have to be careful of the brakes clipping the rim. Overall I still like Subaru.
Just had to have dealer clean my valves at only 28,000 miles! They just used 3 cans of cleaner. Seemed way to early to have to have that done but was having cold start misfires and finally a check engine light came on.
Yea. Yea, I know (sigh) I like this ‘18 FXT but I don’t know if I want to go down the mods/tuning road. Would really like to get rid of that damn cvt and go with a manual. Be a lot easier to just sell it and buy something else though.

So JonDZ Adventuring did a video on that. Apparently the transmission on the outbacks reach their stalling point more quickly than the transmission on the foresters.
the longer wheelbase made it harder. The OBW is heavier and has a longer wheelbase which is gonna make those off camber situations harder.
