As a major Shawn Lane fan over the past 17 years, I am happy to see his incredible music spreading to larger audiences. Thank you.
Shawn lane was a MONSTER , he's by far nr. 1 on my all-time list . Simply the G.O.A.T. Miss ya Bro ..
I would say Guthie Govan and maybe Frank Gambale (in his prime) would be a close second and I am certain they couldn't replicate this level of control on the guitar. Let me say that again. Guthrie in his prime could damn near copy anyone's guitar playing BUT Shawn's. I know this bc in his cover of Shawn's song, he omitted playing the solo which Shawn would perform live. Shawn always went off the rails playing live, as he would channel the moment into his playing.
I think Guthrie had a slightly wider array of styles he could play than Shawn but the styles Shawn did play, he was untouchable.
I've seen Matteo Mancuso play a fast tremolo with this 3 finger plucking technique and even he isn't faster than Shawn's ridiculous speed.
Another thing, Guthrie was self taught and copied the greats of elect guitar. Shawn on the other hand would transcribe some of the most difficult pieces for violin, sax, and piano into guitar, while also implementing techniques from monster innovators like Charlie Parker and Alan Holdsworth.
He was terrifying because he wasn't trying to copy anyone per se. He just learned styles and incorporated them into his playing, making his incredibly unique style so untouchable.
one thing i love about Shawn's playing is his economy of motion. there are no wasted movements, even when he's doing complicated 3-4 nps runs everywhere, or even stretching for those big diminished/augmented runs, everything's very controlled. imo that's one of the hallmarks of a truly capable guitarist, and nobody i've ever seen really comes close to his control of the instrument. whatever was in his head and his heart just came out through the guitar because he didn't have to waste time mentally processing the mechanics of how fast he was playing, or doing those wild stretches or whatever so he could focus completely on expressing the music that inhabited his soul. what a titanic loss, really, we'll be feeling it forever i think
💯 He’s a legend
You should react to him playing piano. It's REALLY something else.
I've been playing guitar for a very long time, starting with classical, then turned to jazz/rock/fusion. I've seen most of the greats live, such as Jeff Beck, Allan Holdsworth, Rory Gallagher, Joe Pass, Greg Howe etc. I'm here to say that Shawn is the GOAT. Today we have Matteo Mancuso to goggle at slack-jawed, what an enormous talent he is, and he decades to go. But Shawn, it's like he was from another dimension, he had it all.
you forgot guthrie lol
@@G-I-JEZUS I agree. Currently living, I still say Guthrie is the greatest guitarist on the planet, living. If people want to argue bc he's old and Matteo Mancuso and Matteus Asato, Tosan Abasi, etc. are so young, fine. But we have all their works right here on youtube. None of them come close to what Guthrie has accomplished.
THAT being said, and this is coming from someone who has studied Guthrie to no end and absolutely adores his playing and albums, I have to say, no one, not even Guthrie himself could touch Shawn Lane.
To me, Guthrie is the greatest living but Shawn is the greatest of all time, period.
I've had discussions where I have doubters try to prove to me He's not the goat and each time they are blown away with what they find regarding Shawn's work.
No one will ever be able to copy Shawn's technique and play exactly like him, he's untouchable. Whereas alive heard Matteo Mancuso already do a solid job covering a Guthrie Govan song.
It's funny there's a guy on youtube, i cant remember his name, something Markchamp? Roy? Rob? Anyway, he made it his mission to play faster than Shawn. I think he is actually. Good for him. But only mechanically, and because he's using a very specific pick. My point is this guy got so obsessed with being the fastest tremolo picker that now he sounds like a robot with no emotion.
All while Shawn still holds the record of the most notes in one second, in a musical piece. Meaning he was not doing it to break records, he just decided to pick fast as hell in a song and it worked. You know Shawn, he would add fast runs to spice up a phrase.
Meanwhile that guy I mentioned plays songs that have almost no life in them. A farcry compared to the level of emotion Shawn could evoke playing fast AND slow. Epilogue to Lisa brings me damn near to tears each time I listen to it.
The man wasn't just a serious genius, he was a gift to music itself. I feel like it's an honor to even witness what he gave the world musically.
@@robosing225 Roy Marchbank.
@@robosing225 That's Roy Marchbank. Yes, he's insanely fast, and there's others close to him. Yet Shawn we revere and remember, it's the quality of his music...
5:09 Shawn was playing a 24.75-inch scale there on his amber 750 XL (now a $4000+ guitar), which I think he favored for those stretches. The stretches are not as important as his wicked double-jointed fingertips and fine control over them.
I cried when i was looking for that guitar. 4k sounds right. He customized his guitars like crazy too. I believe the vigier guitars got his specs down right. Like his flat radius fretboard, etc.
The Jackson version of Charvel's XL75O is flatter and not the exact type. So sad. 😢
Ok, something REALLY IMPORTANT. If you slow down the part staring @8:47, where he hits 88mph and the flux capacitor kicks in…. He’s not just noodling. I’ve digested so many hours of Shawn Lane videos, and audio, that I can tell you, as others will, that his note choice in those sections is very intentional and still has all of the tact and melodic creativity that his slower parts have. It’s just accelerated to a point where it’s almost indiscernible.
Just listen over and over and over, slow it down, and you’ll be amazed at how beautiful the insanely fast parts become. Now they are just crazy displays of showmanship like some say.
relax a bit man.....nobody cares what you think🥴
@@FlyingV344why'd you come here to comment _that_ to the guy? He's clearly passionate about something. Leave him be. If you ain't got nothing to add, just don't comment right?
This is the thing. I'm not a concert classical guitarist but I've been playing both electric and classical guitar for about 24 years, i read music, can play all the standard difficult classical guitar pieces we are expected to know. That being said, i was surprised that someone of his guitar/music knowledge and exp would overlook Shawn's solo as just "noodling".
Even i was able to tell right off the bat each note is not only clearly intentional but even when he's improving certain phrases, each note is intentional. He's got those damn licks and technique some damn under control he can choose to implement them at will whenever he wants. Almost like walking or breathing. To him, it's effortless. It's a level of control us mortals can only dream about. Being able to play licks and phrases on the fly based in that moment in time and what emotion you're feeling.
Having the control to convey the exact emotion you're feeling musically at this echelon is above master level.
That what surprised me about this reaction. Yeah it's ok. He gave Shawn nothing but praise, but just seemed like a fellow guitarist who knows what to look for would appreciate far more of the little nuances Shawn was capable of implementing.
Like he saw fast and a flurry of note and thought noodling, a word tantamount of cheap and like a "party trick", to impress simpletons. But just like paganini, each note meant something. Even if its too fast to catch the first time, after a couple listens you start to see the genius is far more than most people can comprehend. So it gives more appreciation for his choice of notes the next song you hear of his.
Oh hey, just in case you read that other guys comment - I just wanted to let you know that we DO care what you think. Your comment was really interesting and meant a lot to me as I am also a big fan of Shawn Lane. Please never lose your enthusiasm for these things!!!
Aside from his insane, clean speed, Shawn was double jointed in his fingers. That's how he was able to do all those effortless stretches. So it would be impossible for most guitarists to play like he does, let alone play that fast and clean. ; )
No way, really? Thanks for sharing.
@@guitarcody9 Yes, no kidding. I don't believe I've ever seen it mentioned but that's the only real explanation as to how he pulled all that phrasing off. Shawn was my uncle in-law. He was such a humble person that he would be flattered to know that 20 years later, people were reacting and appreciating his gift.
@@valsuarez for real? That’s wild! What a small world. Are you a musician?
@@guitarcody9 Yes, I'm a guitarist, vocalist and a drummer but it's been a few years since I've done any music projects. I have some videos on my channel going back to the mid 90's. Not the best quality but never the less. I just got older and no longer able to hit the notes ya know??? Thanks for the acknowledgement!!!
@@valsuarez A triple threat. That’s cool. I’ll check out some of your videos.
Allan Holdsworth and Matteo Mancuso would probably peek your interest. Especially Mancuso, because he plucks everything, even with distortion. Antoine Boyer is another great player that floats seamlessly between classical guitar and other styles.
Yes, they are all amazing musicians!
I was friends with Shawn. I watched it all first hand starting in 1988. I was there when he recorded Powers of Ten. He is the GOAT. Any questions?
Lmfao a month later I’m finally seeing this on my recommended 🤦🏻♂️
But yes he was fantastic, he really did mature a lot actually when he joined the trio with Jonas hellborg, and Jeff sipe, you should react to the album time is the enemy on Spotify, the playing there is just truly next level
Or actually react to this one a whole reaction to an album is unrealistic 😂 ruclips.net/video/MFVoqXSX0vg/видео.htmlsi=KxnTWORJV3RR-Azu
Probably one of the best improvised solos you’ll ever hear
All good man. Glad you saw it and thanks for the suggestions.
Wow. Just listened to it. Speechless.
Shawn lane mighe be the craziest guitarist of all time
also he is just as good on the keys
So true that it must be fun when you're that good! Unfortunately I'll never know. Lol
MR LANE IS THE GOAT 🐐 NOT HOLDSWORTH NOT MANCUSO NOT GOVAN NOT ARVANITIS ALL INCREDIBLE PLAYERS DON'T GET ME WRONG. LIVERPOOL FC
Totally agree ... A dedicated guitarist can learn Govan, Mancuso et al ... But to play Lane at the same speed, clarity and effortlessness is impossible imho.
Amen
@whoguy4231 a few can play certain songs of lane . Check out Roy marchbank he has played slow then fast a few of shswn lanes stuff note for not unbelievably fast but IMHO lane will always be the greatest. LIVERPOOL FC
Govan is miles ahead of him wtf
@@MrTears03 ask Govan lol

@guitarcody9 part 3 from 1 min 30 seconds. Only a year before he passed away. R.i P the greatest
@@guitarcody9 hope you enjoy cody
Mancuso plucks because he can't pick .FACT
Who cares, he gets his sound across and does his thing, he is obviously musically great so no need to talk down on his approach. I think Holdsworth Pat Metheny, John Mclaghlin and Shawn lane is greater, but still, Imagine where Mancuso will be in 5 to 10 years from now on, he is a generation defining dude, its the Polyphia stuff i don't care for personally.
