Oh, the memories! Me and my mate, Steve taking the sometimes 5-hour trek down to Lydden Hill to watch the European championship roll into town, was the highlight of our year. The cars were amazing, the drivers and the characters were even more so, and the racing had no equal, it still doesn't for me. I still remember vividly, Martin Schanche celebrating victory by drifting the RS200 around a lap of Lydden, wheels on the grass up hairy hill, before pitching the car at a crazy angle into the hairpin, engine fully lit flame pouring from the RS200 and tyre smoke and fuel filling the air. LEGENDS all!!
Barry, you're a star! Such great memories of rallycross in the 80s/early 90s. Group B rally cars are too fast & dangerous eh? Ok lets shove another 3-400bhp into them and race 'em! What's not to love? John Welch, Whitstable Will & Mr Rallycross himself - Martin Schanche. THE most exciting motorsport I've ever seen. Barry, please keep 'em coming.
Thanks 66PHILB yes they were spectacular cars and drivers back when all the group B Rallycars went to Rallycross........I always enjoyed the Rallycross events at Lydden Hill...........Regards Barry
The best vid I have ever seen with all the big power cars together none stop racing, absolutely incredible footage, this should be remastered but is superb none the less. 10/10 for capturing this. UK
This is great Passed my driving test in this year and my first venture to Lydden on my own Stunning went for many years not been since the new generation great cars great drivers thanks so much for posting and the quality is fantastic.
May well of been at this round, always went to Lydden hill as a kid. Nothing better than getting up close to big power ex group b rally cars, always remember the noise and smell.
600 ish bhp, turbos which came on like a bomb, zero driver aids & a loose surface? Ace. The craziest thing is the current market value of those motors. Splendid, just needs Murray chatting but still a tremendous video. 👌🏼
Barry amazing footage thank you so much. These are REAL Rallycross cars all my favourites and more. Thanks again if you have more foorage we would all apreciate it..
Thanks Chunder.......I really loved Rallycross at Lydden in this era.........especially watching the 'Main Man' Martin Schanche in the RS 200......I will have a look and see if I have anymore footage.........Regards Barry
Fantastic footage cars back then had character & lovely to work on,served my apprenticeship at Peugeot/Talbot working on 205,309's & most of the models in this vid bar the rs200's
Love how they seemingly went "Sod FIA, bunch of wusses ammirite 😂" over a brew, then went "Hey remember what we talked about at the pub last night..." and proceeded to actually take all the Gr.B Fix Or Repair Daily 500's, 200's, the Pug 16's, Groomer sleds, Rolling Coal Quattro's, etc, and like 66PHILB said, shoved MORE power into the lot of them, as if they didn't have enough. Then raced it all side by side, nose to tail, on tight circuits with spectators not 10 ft from all the action 🤣🤣
Thanks so much for posting. Many memories came flooding back

Fantastic to see this - the best era of rallycross with banned group B rally cars finding a new use and the rs500 and m3 coming in as quickest 2 wd.
Dont forget the volvo 240 evo.. Looked like it gave the m3 a struggle

exellent, thanks for showing.
Martin Schanche a bit of a hot head...So I heard!. Bloody quick rallycross driver.Saw him at Lydden Hill early 1980s before the insane 4WD turbo era.
Ahh RS200 the flame thrower loved it!
Great to watch and hear the real engine noises
Ahhh those were the days
stupid fast cars spitting flames and going sideways, everything rallycross needs
25:51 synchronized back firing!! 😄
As the event got into the finals the power was increased in the cars equals bigger flames
Nice time 🤗👍🏁
😍😍😍😍
Great cars 🔥🔥 real rallycross cars pass in track not on a joker lap🤣🙈🙈
Who was driving number 15 RS 200
Mark Rennison
🤘🤘🤘🤘

Hi ToreDL87. Brilliant comment, mate!!! I was 20yrs old in ‘88 and was lucky enough to witness this as well as the Brands Hatch events at the time. 😀
