These Mobula alfredi are filter feeders and eat the zooplankton that are attracted to light. Diving with LED lights attracts the plankton and provides an all-you-can-eat buffet for giant manta rays. Manta rays are completely HARMLESS to us as they have no sharp teeth, stingers, or barbs.
However, HUMANS can be harmful to manta rays. Overfishing and illegal fishing have led to decreasing numbers of rays in certain parts of the world, and physical contact with a manta ray can destroy their protecting mucus layer which can lead to infections for the ray.
