By now, you probably know I'm obsessed with ENERGY.
So this episode is really exciting to me. My guest and I take a deep dive into our energy production by taking a close look at one of the last true hunter-gatherer societies on Earth - the Hadza.
I'm joined by Dr. Herman Pontzer, an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Duke University and author of the book Burn: New Research Blows the Lid Off How We Really Burn Calories, Lose Weight, and Stay Healthy.
Dr. Pontzer was also recently featured in The New York Times for his incredible research on metabolism and longevity.
On this episode, he and I reveal the TRUTH about your metabolism, explain why exercising WON'T necessarily lead to more fat-burning, and why the 2,000 calorie a day diet might be all WRONG.
    On this episode you’ll learn:
What most people get WRONG about metabolism - and how understanding the true workings of your metabolism can help you live a healthier, longer life (2:00)
Why more exercise does NOT mean more calories burned - and what REALLY matters for weight loss (3:30)
Why smaller animals live shorter lives (it’s not what you think) - and what your metabolism reveals about YOUR lifespan (8:00)
Why your “energy budget” is SO important - and how to “spend calories wisely” for better health (10:00)
Why I practice “exercise snacking” instead of going to the gym - and how YOU can adopt this technique for better health (it’s a total game changer for busy people) (18:00)
What the Hadza society has taught us about diet and gut health - and why you should NOT eliminate certain food groups from your diet altogether (20:00)
What exciting new research says about the connection between exercise and your brain health (this will make you WANT to workout) (25:00)
Why women who do THIS are 80% less likely to develop alzhiemer’z and dementia - and how YOU can start investing in your brain health today (26:30)
    Mentioned on this episode:

I lost 80 pounds during the covid imprisonment with no exercise, laying in sunshine everyday available, studying all manner of educational information, including classical true science 5-6 hours a day, and following most of the plant paradox diet.

A calorie is not a calorie. We aren't furnaces burning our food, the digestion process is completely different. We can use up to 99% of calories from fat and 90-99% of calories from carbs but only 70-80% of calories from protein. So the caloric value of foods can be misleading. Also note: the more processed the food is, the easier it is for the body to absorb the energy.

Exercise is always fine, but it's maybe of 10% importance in the bigger scheme of health....nutrition and fasting is maybe 90% of reaching your ultimate goal of health.

I think motion and movement, and not necessarily aerobic or High Intensity Training, but just simple motion like with say walking, helps the lymph system to move and expel waste. There is no central pump like the heart with blood, for the lymph system. Working your muscles helps pump the lymph. Sitting still at a computer all day is not good from the point of view of your lymph system.

This guy has a PhD on calories burned. I used to ran marathons. I found that running a 100 km a week is kind a pivot point. More than 100 km where you will start losing weight, regardless the amount of food intake. What a beautiful position. I wonder, is food absorption limited to a certain number of something. I know that my body can only absorb a certain amount of water. Running on a hot for example usually ends in dehydration regardless of the amount of water intake. By the way desk work require some brain function, which is hugely energy consuming. So one must try to find a balance, I hope you can say something about this balance energy consumption, food intake,

Is he saying (about minute 11:00) that exercise causes a reduction in the body producing inflamation? That's huge!! And motivating!

    • @theprophet2444
      @theprophet2444 3 года назад +1

Yes, basically the body shifts it's resources from creating inflammation to building or retaining muscles 💪 but it also means if you don't overeat you will also reap benefits if you don't exercise a lot. There are actually studies showing that calorie restriction is good for reducing inflammation as well.

Hi Dr. Gundry. Do you have an opinion on supplementing colostrum? Others, including your friends Greenfield and Asprey, recommend it for gut and immune health. Since it is similar to HGH, should a 60 year old like me even consider it? Thank-you!

Dr. Gundry - thanks for another great episode! I just turned 60 a few months ago. I have been skinny all my life and all my family members are not very big either. But I’m way skinnier than all of them:( My BMI is always at the bottom of the “normal” range. I play tennis like sport three times a week, 2-3 hours per session. What would you recommend for someone like me in terms of diet?

Interesting interview. Although it wasn't really stated in the conversation, is it fair to conclude that the Hadza people due to their lifestyle of exercise have less cardio /cancer /immune issues/Alzheimer's. What were the results in comparison to city dwellers. And is this due solely to their more active lifestyle or is it diet /cultural/genetic contributing also. For example evolving darker skin leads to less skin cancers. One of the big issues in the West is fertility/ sperm counts halving I would have been interested to know how the Hazard people compared.

I think this talk on metabolism is fine but not hitting at longevity: the crux of longevity is more like what David Sinclair and some are saying about the epigenome restored and DNA repair along with activating the longevity genes that simple fasting can do, short of taking metformin, NMN, and such....the idea of fasting is within the concept of hormesis. To concentrate on that vs. on metabolism and calories burning which is like concentrating on the tree and missing the forest.
