    Ive got the 21 890R and its been great, 18,000 miles on it, dirt and street both. It loves tight paved backroads, totally neutral handling dives into corners readily, the brakes are solid 1 finger stoppers, so easy to use.
    On dirt/rocks/ rough roads the R likes it when I keep the pace up, soaks things up better.
    I put 1 rate softer springs ft and rr to suit my weight, much better that way, A Sargent seat and its an all day comfy ride that way.
    No problems, no wheel issues on mine, havent even had to adjust the chain yet.
    Had a lot of KTM's over the years, this is the funnest one yet.

    Thank you very much for your review. I got my 890 adventure in march 21 and I am at 22 k km (13.6 k miles). Nice tours within Germany, to Scandinavia (north cape), Austria, Slovenia. In 2 weeks I go with friends to abruzzo (Italy). It is my first KTM - I call it my summer bike, I use it on- and off-road, in winter I drive a 1250 RT. I like the power to weight ratio, the handling and the sportive character. At the beginning it seemed to be relatively hard - after setting the rear suspension to comfort (rebound damping) and after getting used to the saddle 500 to 700 km tours have been no major issue. I have the same effect or similar effect on the front wheel: between 65 to 70 km/h (40 to 43 miles/hr) I have a kind of handlebar wobble (shimmy). I did not recognize it with the first Avon tyres - after changing to Heidenau it appeared significantly. After the scandinavian tour I went back to Avon - at the beginning it was a little better but at the end of the tyres it reappeared strongly. My dealer is doing his job very carefully - so he now measured the rim in detail: no negative result. Also rebalancing in between did not change anything. Now I got new Pirelly Scorpion Rally STR, let's see what happens. Beside this there is no major issue - I like the bike very much. By the way: my age is 68. To my opinion the 890 adventure is very suitable for riders with relatively short legs, my size is 1,73 m (5.68 feet).

      Thank you for sharing your insights! I’m sorry you are also struggling with that front wheel issue. Yes-it’s a great bike for short inseams, and for touring. You live in a beautiful place for that! Enjoy!

      @@MotoTherapy Good news - hopefully interesting to you. Starting by the end 😉: after 2 days at my dealer the handlebar wobble dissapeared completely, the machine is running smoothly as never before. As mentioned above I got new Pirelly Scorpion Rally STRs - they look nice and are very convincing (after the first 100 km 😉).
      But: are they the reason for the positive change? Though I am not sure I don't think so. I had the front wheel effect since more than 10k km with Heidenaus and Avons, so I exclude the tyres. What else? My KTM got a new chainset (DID) and the dealer discovered that the nut fixing the front pinion was completely loose - held only by the safety plate ( I hope this is the correct wording). In addition the nut has worked into this safety plate and bent it partly. I guess that this lash and/or the partly used chain are responsible for the wobble effect. Of course I am not sure as it sounds implausible that a loose pinion nut can cause a handlebar wobble. Anyway I am very happy with my "new" 890 adventure. Probably you want to check the nut torque of your front pinion? Very best regards from Münster/Germany...

      @joey-iv1tq Год назад

      @@bandknanacortes1858 yes, it is the nut holding the front sprocket (or pinion?). This nut was completely loose baut as it is hold by a safety shell it cannot be lost completely. My (new) dealer is controlling this nut on all new KTMs he is supplying.

    Thanks for the review! I purchased an 890 S last January also. I’m at 6k miles. I did the MABDR and parts of the SCAR just last week. Great bike! There is simply not another middle weight that fits me better. I’ve had a couple of the KTM issues. Front brake pulsating and getting a new wheel under warranty. Also has the dreaded cold start issue but other than that it’s been perfect. And I agree, it’s a $13k bike KTM-THE DAMN TECH PACK SHOULD BE INCLUDED!!!

    Lot's of reports of guys easily bending the factory wheels so I wouldn't be surprised if yours isn't bent as well. These bikes definitely don't need crash bars, they'd be a total waste of money. My TFT screen has fogged a few times but only on the extreme outer edges so it hasn't concerned me. I've owned over 30 different motorcycles in my life and my 890R is hands down my favorite all around to date.

It's not a shake or a vibration, more like a vertical hop, like going over a series of ridges. We'll see what the dealer can come up with. Bike is on brand new Pirelli STR's. Not sure what’s going on with that front wheel I do not experience that issue but I do have some spoke weights that balance the front so I don’t know if you’ve tried those. I think the perspective you have on whether you buy the R not is correct I come from a motocross off-road racing background so for me the R is by far the best choice because I ride it hard I ride technical single track on it and yes it’s a big beast of a girl but it really performs amazing off-road. Thank you so much for a very detailed and extensive review, coming from real long use 👍 I used to ride an Africa Twin dct on and off-road, as you said awsome bike but heavy to lift up as I'm 65. So tgat I opted for a Husqvarna 701 Enduro: way better and easier off-road, but a pain in the ass on long on-road travelling. So may I consider the 890, when getting older with easier off-road and longer on-road travels. And yes, the Aptilia Tuareg 660 is promising.

    Hi there! You mentioned almost all the points which are important. Spot on! I had a 790 Adv S and switched it for an 890 Adv R which I´m picking up today🙂. With my 790 Adv I had exactly the same issues as you, i.e. foggy instrument and a "strange behaving" front wheel. Same as you, the instrument (screen) was changed by another one which in turn did the same (fogged up). Can´t believe that nowadays KTM ain´t able to have their subs deliever an instrument which simply works as with other makers... The front wheel has been adjusted (rim & spoke tension) and after that I had now issues whatsoever. Yes, there´s a lot of trash-talk about KTM and I know there were some issues, certainly not nice for the respective owners. I had never experienced any breakdowns and/or engine issues. On the contrary, the fuel consumption and hence its range is absolutely fantastic, so is the low center of gravitation. A lot of this trash talk is quite biased and those people often "oversee" that other makes also recall their bikes. My point of view: You can´t have it all (as in real life) and everyone should enjoy his/her own taste. More tolerance towards other bikers would be great. If someone loves his GS or Goldwing or whatever, there´s a reason for it. WHY for Christ sake do people have to talk ill about did and dat? Don´t get it. Safe ride for everyone out there!

    In December of 2020 I bought a new KTM 790 Adventure S and love the bike. It is everything you said it is (Paid an excellent price for it as well ($9,999,00 Total Net tax and tags included in that price). The only problem I have had so far (and not really a problem as it turned out) was what I thought was an oil leak but after having it checked out at the Dealer found it to be some chain oil dripping down. Yeah, go figure. I just recently bought a set of Lone Rider Rear Motto Bags for it but have been procrastinating installing the frame from KTM that will support them, haha. I also own a 2016 Motto Guzzi V7 II Stone which had me considering the KTM or the Motto Guzzi V85 at the time. But I am more than glad that I chose the KTM 790 ADV S. I live in Washington D.C. but may be moving soon since the cost of living here has become one of the most expensive in the USA.

While the AT is an awesome bike, I'm having the same concerns with the the weight and my ability to pick it up. I ride alone and am looking for something that has some off road capability but is lighter and more nimble. Initially, I figured I'd buy a T7, but the lack of availability with the resulting premium pricing and the very high seat height have me looking for alternatives. I have a KTM 500EXC for real off road so the 890 looks like a great option for a street/ADV bike. Thanks for the great review!

      Thanks for watching, and good luck with the bike decision! For me, the 890 was much more manageable for solo riding. My only gripe about it was the typical KTM quality controll issues (mentioned in the video) and the lackluster dealer support regarding warranty support--although I know that can be very dealer-specific, and can be the casae with any brand.

Now looking at Tenere 700 or the 890. in my mind the Tenere wins in respect to cost, availability of parts and reliability (I assume), but loses in those important seat height, smaller fuel tank and pickup weight (reminds me of the BMW). On the other hand the 890 wins with Tubeless, Cruise control and although a little heavier, the weight is down low so from what I've seen is much easier to pickup. Would you be comfortable taking your 890 on a long trip to Tierra del Fuego? That is one of my plans.

      As far as the bike’s size and capability goes, I’d take it almost anywhere except very technical mountain passes (note: I rode the TAT and slabbed back home with no issues). My only concern would be maintenance-I’m not familiar with KTM shops/parts availability in South America. My 890 had irritating but never trip-stopping maintenance issues, yet I know many who have had such with their 890s. Not sure if the new 2023s are any more reliable or not. Since making this video, I’ve sold my KTM and moved to a R1250GSA. Definitely a bigger bike, but I am no longer looking for a do-it-all bike, as I now have a dual sport for more technical riding. The GSA is super comfortable, handles well off pavement, and is easier to pick up than my old Africa Twin, since it doesn’t fall completely flat. It also has incredible range with the big tank.

    I tested the Aprilia Tuareg because I am looking for a lighter motorcycle, but: it is sorely lacking in torque at low revs. It's a small engine so it runs at 6000 rpm at 120km (high revs) so it consumes a lot of fuel. My Bmw f850 Gs saves at least 1 liter per 100km. And it's not cheap... I was delighted before the trying and I was disappointed with the Tuareg, but that's of course personal.
    The new Ktm 890 or even better the KTM 790 seems to meet my search criteria. Like you, I want a lighter bike.
    Ktm is light, the new saddle seems comfortable (I like to travel with my motorcycles) and the new screen seems effective. There is cruise control and it is full of torque even at low revs.

    Front wheel. Try and try again to get the forks and wheel absolutely parallel. My ktm had same issue, I’ve now found ways to measure the fork from the frame to make sure it is 100% true alignment. Since then, it rides loads better at that 35-50 mph range.

    • @MotoTherapy
      @MotoTherapy  2 года назад

    • @mabsbry1318
      @mabsbry1318 2 года назад

      I agree. I’ve managed to measure and then get it straight. Maybe we should tell readers how? If I recall, I measure from foot peg or engine bolt near footpeg, to the brake calliper. Make sure you use exactly the same points each side and make sure you are precise to a mm. Then, I find the bike drives straight. Thoughts?

    • @mabsbry1318
      @mabsbry1318 2 года назад

      Secondly, I check measure from rear rack ( single middle point) to each bar end. If these lengths differ, your wheel could be slightly out. But you have to patiently work using this length and the lower one I mentioned before. A check is to get bar end length the same,look at direction of tire And then check the lower length, which should also be the same. If not, you are out of line, so redo. Etc until you have top and lower lengths correct, each side. Then you’re sorted. Mark up with a pen, and enjoy stability. Cheers

    • @mabsbry1318
      @mabsbry1318 2 года назад

      oh, and always bounce the front folk up/down holding the front brake BEFORE you tighten the axle bolt and the pinch bolts. ideally, the brake caliper should be very slightly loosened as, believe it or not, the caliper can "direct" the front wheel. once you think you have it all aligned, tighten the axle nut, tighten the pinch bolts and tighten the calipers. In that order. spin the wheel to make sure the brakes are not binding and then go ride it.

      Funny you should ask. The 890 Adventure is a great handling bike (better than the Africa Twin off pavement), but KTM’s poor quality control and unwillingness to honor the warranty has led me to sell my 890 and order a ‘22 Africa Twin AS. The Africa Twin will arrive in the next 1-2 weeks. I used to have a ‘18 Africa Twin, and it was a great handling and more comfortable bike (although a bit heavier, and definitely more top heavy). So, I have had both bikes, and I am choosing to return to the Honda now that it has better electronics and tubeless tires.

      That is the million dollar question. I have had a couple of Africa Twins, a 2016 AT DCT and a 2018 Africa Twin Adventure Sports. I have some issues with the 2018 Adventure Sports that Honda seems unable or unwilling to resolve. I strongly considered swapping it for a 2022 Base Model AT, but they have had their own set of issues. TFT going into safe mode, TFT resetting itself, TFT blinking and not displaying Power, Engine Breaking, Tracking Control, ABS and Suspension mode are blinking.
      So I decided to go a different route this time, rather than a 3rd Africa Twin and picked up a 2022 KTM 890 Adventure. Whether that proves to be the right decision or not, time will tell :)

      @@MotoTherapy Yes. I had the 2018 Adventure Sports DCT Model that had the fuel tank issues. It was in twice prior the the recall for fuel tank cleaning, fuel pump replacement and both fuel injectors replaced. Then with the recall Honda cleaned the tank and replaced the fuel pump again (no injector replacement with the recall). The bike continued to have intermittent nagging issues. Sputtered and felt like it was going to stall when cold. Sputtered and felt like it was going to stall at times of low throttle like low speed cornering into my neighborhood. It wouldn't accelerate beyond a certain speed (79mph and 84mph the last couple of times it did it). Trying to accelerate or pass you could open the throttle and count "One Mississippi, Two Mississippi" before it would finally take off and go. Other times coming to a stop it would surge and jerk forward, which is a bit of a crazy feeling when you have no clutch and have to hit the kill switch.
      The dealership kept telling me that it was fine and nothing wrong with the bike. But clearly it wasn't fine. Maybe fine when they rode it around the block or wherever the take it. But it definitely wasn't right.
      American Honda, who told me that they cover the work on the fuel tank, etc. for "The life of the bike," wasn't returning phone calls or emails about it. The bike was also still well inside the extended warranty.
      As mentioned, I did consider trading for a newer model, but the newer CRF1100 models are having their own set of headaches and by this time I had lost confidence in my 2018 and in Honda in dealing with issues. I decided to try something different.
      The first thing that struck me with the 890 Adventure is that at a wet weight of 456lbs, it is a good 100lbs less than the ATAS DCT, which actually took a little getting used to :)
      I know KTM's have their own set of "featured issues," but I have always had a KTM in the garage and did at the time of purchasing the 890 Adventure (2021 690 Enduro R), so I am know what I am getting into with them. I have actually found them to be more responsive than American Honda has been, but that could be a factor of dealership as well.
      Best of luck to you with the Africa Twin. I loved my 2016 AT and my wife loves her 2017 AT. It is too bad the 2018 ATAS turned out to be such a dud. I probably should have kept the 2016 :)

    “Perceived reliability”, it is actual, reality driven and not perception. Though 790 is what I ride and your wheel issue is the wheel bearing failure. KTM quality. What you are describing is going to cause uneven tire wear and pulsating front brakes when stopping with light pull on brake lever.
    Otherwise, I also have fogging of TFT, cruise control will not engage….the list is long. KTMs are junk though fun to ride as you describe, all true.

      Wheel bearing failure from the day I rode it home from the dealer? Failure, or just crappy manufacturing? I would definitely like to get rid of the hop. I agree that KTM quality control is hit-miss…it’s unfortunate. But yes, fun to ride.

      But as for my “perceived reliability” comment, yes perception can also be reality.

      @@MotoTherapy Just watched this and TFT videos, all wonderful.
      I saw where you complained of wheel hop and later you suffered a front wheel air leak. ...maybe a rim issue?
      Hope you get it fixed, whatever it is.

      @@Oriskany34Ken Thank you! I'm still wrangling with the dealership about it. I might end up taking the bike to a different KTM dealership to see if I can get better support.
