Working does not equal earning in the slightest. Salvation is a Mystery, where God and Man work together (Synergy), while at the same time, God did all that is necessary to make salvation possible, man must be found working OUT that salvation. Not to earn it, but to "hold fast until the end". God is completely faithful and we stumble much, and ultimately it is all about God's mercy and His Grace which is not merely divine favor, but the gift is His presence at work within us. Another important note is the way Saint Paul uses this particular word Arrabon, which correctly translates to "down payment" or "earnest money" In the first century and for some time after, this referred specifically money paid out as a downpayment to a worker that needed to fulfill the work, and if they completed the work, the remainder was given. The Spirit is this down payment, the complete payment is the full and blessed life of unity with the Holy Trinity... Paradise! Yet still, it is all a gift of God completely undeserved, yet its a gift we must take and make us of. It is free, but it costs us our whole lives. "If any man should follow after Me, Let Him deny Himself, take up His cross and follow me." We are called to do this... to die to the passions (sins which control us), to our ego and self will, and allow God's holy will to work in us. We are called to actively put off the old man, and put on the new man, which is Christ, and since God is infinite, and Christ is the Divine Word, we are on a trajectory that is infinite... therefore, are we transformed from Glory to Glory, and likewise becoming partakers of the Divine Nature.
Lutherans actually agree with the Orthodox in the subjective objective salvation distinction, the fact that salvation is something that can be forsaken because you must not turn away, theosis and other aspects. The main difference is that we don’t believe man is capable of choosing God and is utterly reliant upon His grace because we believe in original sin. Since Orthodox don’t believe in Original Sin (in the Augustinian sense) they are synergistic. While we agree that faith without good works is dead we would say that the fruit of a tree is not the same thing as the tree. As a Presbyterian who became Lutheran I can assure you that it’s very distinct the Reformed.
Saint Cleopa pray for us. 🙏☦️

How does this reconcile with the epistle to the Romans where the apostle Paul regards, eternal life as a gift and not a wage.
Because we remain unworthy servants who fall short.
