a lot of times, however thanks so much for uploading this and doing the breakdown. I love the content and definitely will be watching more. Very informative and I made my business decision based off this video. Thanks!
Of course! I was so flustered when I set up my first one lol. Glad this helped :) part two should be out next week. That’s where it really gets good with setting up the nas on the network for backups.
@@JustinPorterMedia Yes so I am located in WV and in a rural area and with this currently a part time thing I really don't have internet that anything above the dial up speed lol. So I am trying to start with setting up just a NAS to work off until they get us fiber which is suppose to be coming this year or first of next.
Dude this video is really well produced. Nice seeing the update on the studio and having you walk us through the steps of setting up a NAS. Appreciate your content!
I am at this stage. This is exactly what I needed. It would be great to go into remote editing with this system and sending files etc. Awesome stuff as usual.
Oh yea. Honestly remote editing would be hard since it’s all internet based. It would be better to sync your nas to you editors nas so files automatically download and update on both systems. You could basically do a two way sync between them 🙌🏾
Awesome to see a glimpse of the new studio brother!! Waiting on the full studio tour 👀👀 and happy to see you starting back up on RUclips, great NAS explanation and walkthrough!! - Excel
PLEASE give us more content from setting up the studio! Btw, so cool to see you know about this stuff. I am also into filmmaking and servers. So nice to see that people know how to do simple installations like that.
WOW!!! This is a really good video. I'm not a professional like you are and I'm just getting into videography. I've already filled up a 4TB SSD and I'm need more space in my video editing computer! Many decisions to make and your setup seems like something I want! Thanks for making this!
Thanks so much for watching. If you already filled up a 4tb drive, I’d say it’s time for a nas. There’s some nice 8 bay Qnap systems that are around 700$. Then I’d recommend buying hard drives over time. You can actively add to your storage pool
@@JustinPorterMedia I think that is very good advice! I primarily shoot a lot of drone videos at 4K60FPS and I'm still trying to figure out how to organize... I think that I will organize each file by day versus project and leave them in place. When I move a project folder, to the "complete" folder, when I go back to it, I have to go Locate that file! Just learning this because I started shorts... Thanks for the additional info. QNAP! For long term storage, do like SSD or HDD?
Thanks, this was exactly what I was looking for. Going to look for the set video now. ... and a funny side note: I've installed the same Milliken carpet in my hotel over here in Germany. It reduces sound from walking etc. incredibly well! ;)
Great video! I would suggest going with SFP+ PCI card on your QNAP and use a DAC cable to connect back to your switch. SFP+ to RJ45 transceivers creates alot of heat and they are expensive compare to SFP+ or DAC cables.
The switch we have I only use the adapter for port 1. The other 8 ports are combo ports so I’m just running cat 6A directly in. The dac solution I should do for the nas and switch for sure.
Great solution…if you are a massive production studio with multiple staff members. If you are a solo shooter, and shoot say 20 weddings a year, this is still a great solution. But if you’re sitting at home having run out of space on your external hard drives and thinking “man, I really need to look into a NAS” then bear in mind this is a well over $10,000 solution being presented.
Hey Justin, Great video I love your content and how you break everything down. I'm looking into slowly building a NAS similar to yours for my home office that I'll be using to edit my shorts films and other projects. The switch you have is no longer available what would you recommend in a similar switch as far as minimum number of ports and port types? Also for my home internet speed what would you recommend that would work best with the NAS? Thanks. Keep up the good work.
@@letamendi hey. That’s a bummer it’s not available but check out the QNAP QSW-3216R-8S8T As far as your setup, remember your internet won’t really have anything to do with the connection speed to your computer. If you’re trying to upload or download files then you’ll want fast internet. Run 10gig Ethernet to your computer from the switch so you can get fast transfer speeds of your footage. That make sense?
Have you done any performance testing on this unit? Did you end up running QTS or QuTS hero? I think with the 8 core CPU it should run well for video editing on QTS with the 8GB RAM it comes with or run well for editing on QuTS Hero with at least 16GB RAM. But I don't yet have performance feedback from editors for this unit.
Performance is phenomenal. I have a part 2 coming but we get about 6-800 mbs write and 1100 read. I have 4 2 tb ssds setup for read cache too. We edit b raw 6k from 2 workstations and export from an export station at the same time and no system has any issues. I also want to setup smb multichannel to see what improvements I could get. As of now with the default I’m a happy camper lol
@@JustinPorterMedia SMB multichannel should increase throughput but adds latency and may not always be the best option for video editing. LACP link aggregation can allow multiple editors to get more throughput. And that should not have a significant increase to latency. But LACP likely won't make a single user get more throughput and usually only helps for multiple users accessing the nas at the same time.
A brilliant video. The QNAP Managed switched that you brought for this setup was very smart idea indeed. Was just wondering if you will be setting up VLANs and then will be connecting WiFi access points to that same switch or you plan to connect a separate switch directly to the internet router and get Wifi access points configured on your router. Anyway good luck.
Deffo something for the future!!!! What laptop did you say you personally edited from? Was thinking a pimped up Macbook... but you may have a better solution.
It’s definitely amazing to have. I actually edit from my desktop mainly. The laptop is just for when I have to travel but usually nothing extensive. It’s an MSI creator Z16P.
Such an insightful video. How I wish to have this also, but my currency to the dollar is a price to pay, but surely, one day. Glad you are strong and back to do massive things

Have you considered using LTO-8 or LTO-9 tape to backup? It is great for archiving and has a 30 year archival life. Also the tapes are low cost 😊 you can add this long term backup into your packages for weddings.
Hey Justin! Any chance you could point me in the right direction to the next video? Exploring some of these options. Thanks for the helpful information man!
Hey buddy! Make sure you set your policies on the firewall to not let this thing access the internet. QNAP got crushed with a bitlocker virus a few months back.
Does anybody know what happens when you fill up a drive? Do you just replace it with a new one, and the NAS knows what to do? Or will you have to format all the drives ? Or replace them all at once?
How fast will that NAS run? As I understand it, it comes with an Atom 2.8 Ghz processor. 8 Gig of DDR4 memory stock. It can be expanded to 128 GB though. Just curious as to what else have you done to get more speed out of it. JustWondering.
