  • On July 3rd 2022 I set off from The Hook of Holland in The Netherlands, turned right and pedalled off in the direction of France. It was an anti-clockwise tour of the continent; the EuroVelo 12 along the Belgian coast, the EuroVelo 4 to Dieppe, L’Avenue Verte to Paris, La Véloscénie to Mont St Michel before rejoining the EuroVelo 4 to Morlaix, the EuroVelo 1 / Vélodyssée to Royan, the Canal de la Garonne to Toulouse, the Canal du Midi to Sète, the EuroVelo 17 beside the Rhône to Andermatt in Switzerland and finally the EuroVelo 15 / Rhine Cycle Route back to The Hook of Holland and the return ferry to Hull on September 3rd.
The film comes in four parts and this is part 3 of that film that tells the story of the cycle from Sète on the Mediterranean coast along the Via Rhôna / EuroVelo 17 to Andermatt, high in the Swiss Alps.
Filmed entirely on location in France and Switzerland, the audio extracts are taken from episode 58 of The Cycling Europe Podcast and the music is written and performed by Rob Ainsley.
More details about the journey and the podcast can be found at CyclingEurope.org/LeGrandTour

Nifty descending skills after Furka, whoooosh!!

Yes, it was a nice descent although the barrier on the right hand side of the road (between me and the cliff) was often just bollards. A bit hairy at times!

From the Trumpton/Camberwick Green music on the river valleys...... To descending the Furkapass to some quality Trance. That certainly gets you in the mood.
Did you have to stop on the descent to let your brakes cool down or was the gradient not that bad? I burnt mine out on the Croix de Fer..... (I learnt from it....)
Great video. Currently going through your audio podcasts at work.

So inspiring seeing these films, and so nicely put together as well. The Via Rhôna/ev17 looks like the most dramatic route of those you took in France, and I imagine it was incredible to watch the mountains gradually close in and the river shrink. From your images it looks like the river is mostly lined by green and countryside outside of the towns of course, and wow, the suspension brides are beautiful! Seeing all that rain and dynamic cloud it seems like the mountains create quite a different micro climate to the rest of France too..? Definitely on my bucket list now… :)

Thanks. I think you got the Via Rhona spot on. It was the section of the trip around Europe for which my expectations were lowest but ended up being my favourite route, by far!!

Question: I know from your KOGA review that you have a Brooks leather saddle, but at time 15’58” your bike is sitting out in the pouring rain and the saddle appears to be unprotected. Proofide doesn’t offer THAT much waterproofing protection, does it??

Yes... Probably not the best thing to have done but at least the bike got a good clean. The Brooks is basically leather. I use the wax that is provided for the underside of the saddle but by that point of the trip - about six weeks in - it's effects had probably worn off. The saddle survived fine and I still use it today...

It's really a Grand Tour. My recent tour in Morschach in Switzerland was similar to this!

Where did you get your maps you used on the bike for the euro velo 17? Thanks. Loved the video. Going myself in September

Hi. Thanks for the positive comments. I picked up the maps in the tourist office in Avignon. I'm sure most tourist offices in the area and along the route will have them. Good luck in September. You'll love it!
