I for one am present on 4th may of every year at the graves of a British crew in Friesland as a token of our deep appreciation for what they have done for us. my next door neighbour was Polish. a fine man. his sister lived two doors away. both had a terrible time during the war. Sophia was sent to Siberia by the Russians, how she survived i cannot tell. Ted and Sophia were re-united after the war, and eventually settled here in Nottingham. Ted fought at Monte Cassino, and made it home here. they're both gone now and i miss them both very much. drinking Polish Vodka with Ted on Christmas morning and eating a cold meat breakfast is something i will always treasure in my memory bank. An uncle of mine was navigator on a Lanc, and a former neighbour flew with 'the other' Dambuster Squadron. Both survived - but many did not. Thank you, boys at Leeman's for doing this for them all.
If you have been to Holland as I have, no one respects, Allied War dead like they do. The Dutch people where worth saving, flags of US and UK still fly amongst Dutch Flags and as a testament almost all speak english rather well. If you have never been to the US Cemetary in Margraten, you can see how the locals honor and take care of the graves of the boys who died and are buried there.
My uncle Patrick Francis Clarke was killed while flying over the North Sea from the Shetlands Isles. He was part of a crew who were patrolling the area. His plane R3827 Blenheim IV was machine gunned. He was the only fatal casualty. He was just 3 months short of his 21st birthday on the day he died on 21June 1940. He now lies in the war cemetery above Lerwick, Shetland Isles. His descendants remember him and all who gave their lives in WW2.
In front of my parent's grave there's an effigy stone of a pilot killed in '43 over the north sea. He was Harold Alsop, 333 Bombing Sq, 84th Bombing Go killed 7/26/1943. It's the only 1 of it's kind I've ever seen. He grew up there.
My uncle Donald was a Lancaster bomber pilot with the RCAF Flew lots of missions into Germany. Our family has his pilot’s log book. Amazing to see his missions. Glad he survived the war.
Look at the effort, manpower, materials and cost that went into bringing these men home! Without such work, people who fought for their country would be just forgotten about ! Some families can get closure from this, as they can be removed from Missing, presumed killed list! Hopefully the crew get burial with full honours!
Usually, we let those war-dead rest in peace. In this case, the bombs onboard the plane made the recovery necessary. Recovering the remains was a small effort once the site was dry....

The Canadian Warplane Heritage Avro Lancaster came over to the UK some years ago flew around the RCAF bases here in the UK such a unique experience two Lancs paying homage to those who failed to return Thank you so very much

Wonderful video! My father was a Navigation/Wireless Operator on a Mosquito Bomber, immigrating to the US with my mother in 1956. I have heard many stories of sacrifice and triumph over the years. He still resides in my family home in Southern California at 96 years old!
Those men thought they would be wiped from history forever, lost eternally to the sea, hope they are able to see what we see and know they were not forgotten.
My father was a WWII Navy vet. He was one of 13 men to receive the Meritorious Mast during the battle of Japan. My heart goes out to these men as well as their families. I am so proud of all the allied veterans who fought on the side against tyranny. Thank you From the U.S
What courageous men these were, to repeatedly go out, night after night against heavily defended targets. This retrieval was very thoroughly carried out and it's never too late for family members to receive personal belongings from their long lost relative. Great dignity was accorded to the lost crew and the final flyover was touchingly beautiful. Thank you.
Well done the Dutch for this. Total respect sending home 6 of the 57,205 Bomber Command aircrew who were killed out of 125,000 aircrew (a 46 percent death rate). They fought and died not just to keep the UK free but to keep the flame of freedom burning for the whole of Nazi dominated Europe as a beacon of hope. A sacrifice that has been whitewashed away and forgotten by the EU and many of its followers in Europe as it re-writes our history and makes out the UK are the bad people because we want OUR freedom. "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them." my uncle was a Rear Gunner on a Billy Mitchell bomber that was shot down over the South Seas of China. he was last seen parachuting into the sea but his body never recovered. for years my mother had dreams of him coming home. it haunted her, really. families of MIA soldiers get no rest because there's no closure. my heart is filled with humility and respect for those who brought these brave men home to their families and country.
Young men and boys, hero's all of them.I doubt many of them ever thought how much they would still mean to us so many years later, power to the people who keep there memory alive.
My great grandfather piloted a B-17 Flying Fortress, he was a part of the 447th bombardment group, he flew 6 bombing missions over germany and survived the war, I never met him but he is buried in NYC. Videos like these really make me appreciate and respect the diversity of people who had the bravery to fight against the Axis Powers.
The bravery, suffering, and sacrifice of the Polish People before, during, and after WWII are Legendary. From defeating a Soviet invasion intended to conquer all of Europe in 1921, helping the Jews trapped in the Warsaw ghetto, the battle for Warsaw itself fought by the Polish Home Army, which saw the near total destruction of that beautiful city, to the thousands of Polish patriots who escaped the nazis only to enlist in the British Army and fight ferociously. Europe and America owe Poland our respect and gratitude.
I couldn't help but be moved very deeply by this story as my Grandfather served in this war too. He was the senior stoker on the Australian HMAS Arunta and all the seamen that served with him called him 'Pops' Sweeney 'cause he had a bit of a temper. He survived the war only to be killed in a bi-plane that got hung up in hi-voltage power lines within 6 months of his return. He'd always wanted to fly but settled on duty being a seaman because of his age. The families of these 'Returned Fly-boys' will be forever grateful to these brave men too.
Knew Free Poles in Peterborough, England, who fought at Arnhem and elsewhere. Impossibly brave, their sufferings and love for their country that has endured so much, was remarkable. I’m proud and honoured to have known them. Sto lat! The Dutch are a great people too.
Did anyone else notice the bird joining in on the flyover at the end? On a more serious note, my first reaction was to think that all this time and energy and expense could have gone to better things with all the current problems in the world. But then it occurred to me that I am often saying that today's younger generations have no appreciation of the sacrifice that was made to make it possible for them to live their rich lives today. So it's very important to remember that sacrifice and to be grateful to those who made it.

as a dutchperson . yes we are very greatfull what the allies did for us. we remember their sacrfice and pay our respects every year.
I have a Dutch friend who's mother remembers British soldiers giving her chocolate, everytime she has chocolate she's reminded of that day.

They sacrificed so much, made it safe and we're just messing it up fast. WW2 will look friendly compared with future competion for living space, clean water and crops.
People don't see their damage to the environment as a threat but at this rate our kids will be in a worse mess than those poor folk that had to endure WW2.

One of the only two remaining flying Lancaster flies out of Hamilton airport all the time... it flew right over my parents house yesterday at about 1500 feet. Love the sound of it.

Yes, the sound of four Merlins is wonderful. They brought my father and his crew home safely during his second tour of operations in 1943.
@WillieG Thank you! He was a very lucky pilot. Despite damage to his aircraft from flak and nightfighters on his two tours of 52 missions, his crew always came home safe. Sad that so many did not.

On the night 08-09/May 1941 Crew was on the way to bomb port of Bremen and was shot down by German Night fighter on approach to Dutch Coast. RIP

Wonderful video! My father was a Navigation/Wireless Operator on a Mosquito Bomber, immigrating to the US with my mother in 1956. I have heard many stories of sacrifice and triumph over the years. He still resides in my family home in Southern California at 96 years old!
Those men thought they would be wiped from history forever, lost eternally to the sea, hope they are able to see what we see and know they were not forgotten.

My father was a WWII Navy vet. He was one of 13 men to receive the Meritorious Mast during the battle of Japan. My heart goes out to these men as well as their families. I am so proud of all the allied veterans who fought on the side against tyranny. Thank you From the U.S

What courageous men these were, to repeatedly go out, night after night against heavily defended targets.
This retrieval was very thoroughly carried out and it's never too late for family members to receive personal belongings from their long lost relative.
Great dignity was accorded to the lost crew and the final flyover was touchingly beautiful.

Well done the Dutch for this. Total respect sending home 6 of the 57,205 Bomber Command aircrew who were killed out of 125,000 aircrew (a 46 percent death rate). They fought and died not just to keep the UK free but to keep the flame of freedom burning for the whole of Nazi dominated Europe as a beacon of hope.
A sacrifice that has been whitewashed away and forgotten by the EU and many of its followers in Europe as it re-writes our history and makes out the UK are the bad people because we want OUR freedom.

The noisy kids can gob off and make you feel its been pissed away but its just noise. Look at the people in our armed forces, those who are fighting on the front line of COVID and those just doing an honest days work which until COVID struck was the biggest number since the '70s when industries were labour intensive. We have world leading industries, research and technology businesses and the word 'British' still means a huge amount all round the world.
I see nothing in my country of which I should be ashamed. And we still have that will to do down tyranny when we see it as proved in 2016. OK the Establishment and that Remain Parliament put up barriers but we (again the silent majority) just said 'ENOUGH' in May and again in December last year.

my uncle was a Rear Gunner on a Billy Mitchell bomber that was shot down over the South Seas of China. he was last seen parachuting into the sea but his body never recovered. for years my mother had dreams of him coming home. it haunted her, really. families of MIA soldiers get no rest because there's no closure. my heart is filled with humility and respect for those who brought these brave men home to their families and country.

Young men and boys, hero's all of them.I doubt many of them ever thought how much they would still mean to us so many years later, power to the people who keep there memory alive.
My great grandfather piloted a B-17 Flying Fortress, he was a part of the 447th bombardment group, he flew 6 bombing missions over germany and survived the war, I never met him but he is buried in NYC.
Videos like these really make me appreciate and respect the diversity of people who had the bravery to fight against the Axis Powers.

The bravery, suffering, and sacrifice of the Polish People before, during, and after WWII are Legendary. From defeating a Soviet invasion intended to conquer all of Europe in 1921, helping the Jews trapped in the Warsaw ghetto, the battle for Warsaw itself fought by the Polish Home Army, which saw the near total destruction of that beautiful city, to the thousands of Polish patriots who escaped the nazis only to enlist in the British Army and fight ferociously. Europe and America owe Poland our respect and gratitude.

I couldn't help but be moved very deeply by this story as my Grandfather served in this war too. He was the senior stoker on the Australian HMAS Arunta and all the seamen that served with him called him 'Pops' Sweeney 'cause he had a bit of a temper. He survived the war only to be killed in a bi-plane that got hung up in hi-voltage power lines within 6 months of his return. He'd always wanted to fly but settled on duty being a seaman because of his age. The families of these 'Returned Fly-boys' will be forever grateful to these brave men too.

Knew Free Poles in Peterborough, England, who fought at Arnhem and elsewhere. Impossibly brave, their sufferings and love for their country that has endured so much, was remarkable. I’m proud and honoured to have known them. Sto lat!

Did anyone else notice the bird joining in on the flyover at the end? On a more serious note, my first reaction was to think that all this time and energy and expense could have gone to better things with all the current problems in the world. But then it occurred to me that I am often saying that today's younger generations have no appreciation of the sacrifice that was made to make it possible for them to live their rich lives today. So it's very important to remember that sacrifice and to be grateful to those who made it.
My respect to these men, who did not choose death, but chose to do something, anything, instead of standing idly by to Nazi tyranny.
