  • An edition of the long-running BBC TV series “Songs of Praise”, broadcast on 16 October 1977 and featuring the choir of St Botolph’s church, Boston, directed by David Wright. The picture quality may not be great but this recording is older than any recording of “Songs of Praise” the BBC has in its archives.
The series “Songs of Praise” began in October 1961, and the very earliest edition known to have survived anywhere is the black-and-white broadcast from Guildford Cathedral on Easter Day 1967, which can be seen here on our sister channel, ArchivesofSound: • "Songs of Praise" East...

David Wright, the organist departed us a couple of days ago.. He was the pillar of musical education in Boston for 50 years.. I owe my career to his careful stewardship as a Grammar School lad..

I was seven at the time and remember Songs of Praise, including Geoffrey Wheeler. The tune is in D minor, although it ends with a Picardy Third (listen for the F#). It was another seven years before I became a Christian and five before I started going to church. Personally, I don't like the signature tune as when growing up it sounded sinister!
