Today I'm going to teach you a technique frequently used in jazz and fusion. It has to do with the use of unconventional scale shapes.
These shapes make sense visually, but they are not built over any music theory at all. They are designed to take the listener outside and then back in by using a strong sense of rhythm.
It's important to think like a drummer when a drum fill approaches. Those are the best moments to go outside by using these unconventional shapes.

HOLY SMOKES! I am just at 2:34 on the video and I already learned one very important tip: treat your guitar solo like drum fills! MAN, THAT IS A KILLER TIP!
I guess im asking the wrong place but does any of you know a way to log back into an Instagram account..?
I was dumb lost the password. I appreciate any tips you can give me.
no matter the instrument, we are all drummers
David, you have literally transformed the way I approach lead guitar. Best way to thank you was to purchase your training course - worth every penny so far.
Oh man, thank you so much!!!
Music is paradox: These runs, as you say, "don't make any sense at all". And that's exactly the reason why they sound so intelligent.
Damn, Music is a paradox such a powerful statement.
I’m using these in my gig tomorrow night for sure. Thanks
How did the gig go?
Hi sir I'm from Philippines.. Just an amateur guitarist... This video of yours is super cool ang effective to me... Because currently I am practicing fusion playing on guitar.. This video helps me a lot... I hope one day I can jam with you personally... Hehe... God Bless
Wow. I have learnt more in the last 5 minutes than I have in the last 50 years! Thanks.
David, I can tell ya how happy I am that I found your RUclips channel. You've given me so much to work from. I'd say traditionally I'm a metal guitarist. But I've recently joined my church band. And I was struggling to find ways to add in melodic soloing and accents to already established church music and make it sound as though it always belonged there. Thanks man and I always look forward to your next videos. Keep rockin🤟
Thank you so much brother!
This is was Victor wooten was explaining to the dude of music is win channel, its not the right notes that pick your atention but the wrong ones played with feeling and at the right moment
Love these kinds of licks. So much distinct personality.
Thank you so much for this - it's excellent.
Thanks for this. Very insightful!
Thank u help me out heaps .very clear instructions to
I am glad to have signed up for your lessons. all excellent and reasonably priced. Without going Fractal- any pedals you recommend to achieve something close to your lead tone on this and countless other video lessons, any advise would be appreciated by thousands of followers.
Best fusion guitar tutorial on RUclips!
Original, créatif, belles couleurs, libérateur, précis ...! Merci David.
Something out there but fun to try if you have your rhythm really down and your alternate picking.
Thank s David
Spicy lick and scale..nice video..I got treasure from your video..thanks david..🍻
Great lesson !
Unreal that easy .U have helped me out so much
What a beauty guitar
this lesson is pure gold. Thank you David!
Hi David, thanks! Honestly you are one of the clearest guitarist I found on RUclips when it comes to explain styles and techniques!
Could I ask you what would you recommend to have a really good lead sound for fusion?
(Like the one you have in this video).
Thanks!
Amazing Tips and Shapes... Thank you very much 🤎🤎👏👏
Thanks David, this helped a lot!
Wow..... this is absolute pure gold. Thank you!!
David, can you tell me please, what pedal you are using?
cool concepts man, i been doing lots of work like this recently too, i would always see theory as i played, i found it to be restricting? so have studied how others view it to find new approaches, i make a great exercise or song idea most days now, i love seeing it in a new way or finding new ideas..
best tips!
You r a cool dude I like your approach and style.
Cool video bro!! 🤟🤟👊👊
Why haven’t I listened to this guy previously...wow, better late than never
sick lesson, love this!
Happy having found this channel. Great lesson to spice up your impro, ... even being the blunt bass guy.
Thx u for sharing!
I'm instantly jamming with this..
Great stuff as always thanks
Great playing man!!
Totally cool. Can you explain what type of backing track it is? In other words, to use these shapes, what king of a progression would you need to follow. Your backing track is great, but what are other types of tracks would this work for? BTW, best lesson I have had in months from anybody. I am liked and subscribed.
Really interesting and precious! Thanks.
i go crazy exciting to play this phraing~~wow. you rule~
Thanks mate, you just taught me heaps and you’re good at it 🎼
Cool Kiesel and lesson!
awesome lesson as always
Fusion? Very simple! ))
Super vidéo ! Ravi d'avoir eu la chance de te saluer sur le booth Vola au dernier Namm !
Great stuff! 👍
good stuff, thank.
Thank you !
The first shape is the Messian mode 3
Very good lesson
Are these diminished runs?
@@peterfletcher8411 no but close. The 5, 8, 6, 7, was used in the 30s to present Jazz.
@@rccarsandmusic2641 thanks for clarifying that for me Robert....
Gives me a fuller picture of what is going on....
Great 👍 loved it!
You are amazing and i love you 😋
Awesome 😃👍🎸🎶
You saved my life
Neat
What does this inscription "HURLEY" on your T shirt means ?..
It’s just the shirt brand. :)
I'm learning all these things as a bass player
The interesting thing is that the shapes repeat without taking into account the B string tuning.
What a great lesson especially with Eddie Van Halen’s birthday the other day! He uses these type of licks all the time especially with legato and tapping.
700 yes is mine !! :)
❤
Fab way to escape the occasional monotony of church modes and penta.
Maaaaaan!!! Autosubs!!!
you need a Kiesel to sound like this. Squier is not enough,
I really dislike fusion but I have to say you play it So well. And these are great ideas to accomplish that feat. Stay Well Maestro.
What’s every guitarists religion? Chromaticism
Repetition legitimizes!
Someone needs to tell you. Those earrings look ridiculous. Do yourself a favor and take them out. You're welcome.
You're a great guitarist
You think like me.
Me too
But definitely doesn't sound like me ✋
Never mind the lead solos I need to know fusion chords
this video is a waste if you are
only teaching solos.grrr
what about the fusion chords ???
Thank you!
