How to Pack a Caravan

  • Welcome Back Everyone. In this video, I show and demonstrate how to correctly pack your caravan...
When Packing your caravan you want to insure that your heavy items are placed at floor level over the axle. Medium weight items can be placed in-front and behind the axle again at floor level and light items can be stowed overhead in the lockers.
We also load our car up. This means we have our awning, Aquaroll, Wastemaster and Security items in the car as these items are heavy.
As we have an island bed it means we have extra storage. We fill ours with our chairs, and awning equipment. However if you have an island bed at the rear of the caravan you must be careful as this could give a low noseweight.
When checking our Noseweight we aim for 85-95KG this allows for a stable and secure tow. We use a Milenco Noseweight gauge to measure this.
Below is a link to how to prepare your caravan for the road and these two videos will work well together.

Hi Oliver weve been caravaning for 5 years now, and i have never checked the nose weight. i have gone with if the caravan is fairly level it will be ok. Anyway i have invested in a nose weight guage, but i dont really know which figure on the van im supposed to be looking at. So was just wondering when you say your nose weight is between 85 and 95 how did you work it out? Been meaning to ask you for a couple off months.

Hi Glyn. You need 3 figures to find out your noseweight... your cars noseweight limit, towball limit and your caravans hitch limit. Once you have these pick the lowest and this is your maximum. Then work out between 5-7% of your MTPLM. We go for 7% and also experience shows 85-95 gives a nice tow. That time we had 92kg. I hope that helps, Oliver.

Very neat and tidy. I guess that comes with lots of practice. Happy travels and keep smiling ~ Lin xx

Nice one Oliver. I liked those bars that held the stuff in the cupboards. A couple of times things have fallen out when we first open them. Normally only packets of crisps or bread so no injuries 👍🏻

Another top vlog Oliver, yes there are others on here but it's nice to see a vlog not made 5 or 6 years ago even though the advice is more or less the same but another one done nicely 👍

Kev uses those extending poles in the garage of our motorhome to keep the bottles and stuff from falling out. We use a lot of non slip matting in our motorhome to stop rattles of the pots and pans. Also between the plates round the cups. Nice video Oliver 👌 Yvonne and Kev

We're new to caravanning, so this was really useful Oliver. As we haven't got the bars for the cupboards, we have been putting everything on the floor in folding crates. Looks like we'll be buying some of these! Only 2 of us and we have a big estate, so loads go in the car.

I was always under the impression that belongings shouldn’t be stored in upper cupboards when towing? Or is it light enough that it doesn’t really matter? I’m new to caravanning so not sure if this is correct!

Hi Ashley. It's totally personal preference, we do it as we have the luxury of being on the drive. As Long as you don't put really heavy stuff in the cupboards you will be fine. Thanks for watching, Oliver.

I'm surprised that you tow with the blinds closed. I was under impression they needed to be up!

Hi Linda. It’s personal preference, we always choose to keep ours closed as it keeps the van cool inside. Thanks for watching, Oliver

I bet if you weigh the contents of your caravan you’ll be over the payload limit by quite a margin. I doubt the user payload is much above 170-185kg. If you are over the limit you’re unlikely to be insured and liable to prosecution. Be worth checking to be safe. 👍🏻

Evening Huw. I have weighed every single thing in the caravan and I have a spread sheet here. We are 10kg under when we have 2weeks worth of food and clothes etc... a lot of stuff goes in the car.
