- Toolboxes are handy for keeping things all in one place, but they aren’t much good if you can’t quickly access everything in them. The classic problem is that you need to fish to reach what’s in the bottom. For the past ten years Jimmy DiResta has lived with this design flaw, but as of today, no more!
Watch as Jimmy modifies the design of an antique toolbox, intentionally misuses a Festool Domino, uses a clever method of sanding the top perimeter flat and more signature DiResta tips.
I really like the domino look. Awesome work Jimmy!!!
Jimmy, I just figured you out. You don't play by the rules. When you don't play by the rules, you make discoveries and creativity is nurtured. Thanks.
+Michael Myrick ha thank you !!
+jimmydiresta nice job dude ... going to make myself one now !
How can people don't like jimmy's videos !!! Thank's jimmy !
Superb workmanship! One tiny thing that I hardly dare mention. 13.39. I was always told not to store planes face down like that, but always on their sides.
Great looking box. Better than most furniture made today. Liked the tip about scoring the back of the plywood when making box joints. I have trouble with tear out even when I use a backer board.
Great video. The narration makes a big difference. Thank you.
The razor cut on the back before cutting the box joints is something i'm adding to my process, thanks Mr. Diresta for another good tip!
Beautiful Jimmy, the dominos look fantastic too, I doubt Festool will complain. I pick up something new in every video you do, thank you for that.
Say what you will, with all his skills and all his trades Jimmy D's first and true love is working with wood.
From a man who made his living for 30 years around sawdust this is one fine piece of work and an equally fine video he's produced
with your finger joints that tight man you probably don't even need glue awesome work man incredible craftsmanship
Gotta say, your knife and chisel work for recessing the hinges looked pretty well perfect.
I imagine a lot of people (like myself) mostly see you work with power tools so it's easy to foget how accomplished you are with hand tools as well.
Much respect, inspiring stuff.
This would take me a week and 5 times as much wood as you use to get it right. You're amazing.
Beautiful to watch. You make it look so simple but the craftsmanship is exquisite. More please!!!!!!!
Nice work Jimmy. The domino's will line up every time the way you did it. The long stick sander is a great tip, thanks.
So many good little nuggets in this build. Never thought of using the domino that way - gives you an extra 1/4 depth in each tray instead of a dado all the way around, 1/4 up from the bottom. I think the dominos go great with the finger joints - they look about the same size and people are going to wonder how you did the dominos. Please do a video on the dividers, I'd be very interested in seeing how you do yours. Thanks again for another great video. Scott
Thank you !
Always a pleasure to watch a master at work
I 'm from Puerto Rico and No Loser videos are great and inspiring. That hurts us in Puerto Rico Cement and Iron instead of using techniques or as yours . I'm your number one fan .
bloody marvellous. he makes it look so easy. I want to see a diresta blunders compilation just to prove he's a normal guy
Brilliant use of Dominos! I might actually buy one now just on the weight of the idea you have given me. You get the strength of joinery, sort of like Miller dowels, and the beauty of the Domino accent. Brilliant!
Dude, it`s people like you that motivate me to TRY and do stuff like this!!! The quality of your workmanship is unreal!!!
Thank you !!!
Looks great reminds me of my grandfather's tool chest as a furniture maker in the 30's.
the dominoes look great. and you're right, the wood will break long before the yellow glue bond. beautiful toobox!
+tim sway I'd go as far as saying the screws in the corner were probably not necessary, and might actually weaken the joint. Screws are usually used as tiny clamps to hold the piece together while the piece dries. Now, letting the piece dry, then drilling a hole and gluing a dowel in could add some of strength. Which I suppose is exactly what the dominoes are doing for the drawers.
Your work is very nice. I like the attention to detail that are both practical and attractive.
I am really enjoying the variety of videos that you have been putting out: straight build, voice-over, vlog. Thanks for what you do. Your cleverness inspires.
Never seen the relief cut idea to help a board sit more flush! That’s why I love these videos. I always pick up things I haven’t thought of before. I’ve been considering making a machinist type box out of pallet oak to keep all my squares and measuring tools.
That domino hack definitely makes the through tenons a lot faster than the old fashion way. I've been woodworking for about 30 years now and never stop learning new tricks. The long sanding board was a really cool trick too, can't wait to use, it thanks for all the great ideas! keep it up!
This is Awesome and because of you I'm building this same tool box. I sent you a message to your email here on youtube apologizing for a post that was made while is was not at my pc and by someone that was inebriated. I have followed you and been inspired by you for several years. Your work is amazing as well as your shop tips. Thank you for all you have done and continue to do for the maker community.
So many good tips in this video! Also I love the experimentation with the dominos!
Sorry to be offtopic but does anyone know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account?
I was stupid forgot the password. I love any assistance you can give me!
@Cullen Gunnar Instablaster :)
@Ben Vance Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process atm.
Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Ben Vance it did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thanks so much you really help me out!
@Cullen Gunnar no problem xD
Where and when did you learn all this stuff ? On the Job or some Trade School ? Yeah, sure helps me out at times. I go back and watch your tips for refreshing. Thanks DiResta...
The trick with the dominos makes it look even better! Jimmy your not the only one with all your toolboxes top lids left open. I feel the exact same about those lousy locks as you! Awesome video! Keep up the great work!
I think Jimmy is going to start a new trend with the domino like a dowel. I think it looks great!
I had an injury at work. Time to catch up on your videos again! Always good for a day at home. Love your work buddy
Relief cuts to take the flex out of the white oak was clever. Well played.
love the look with all the jointing on show. cool idea with the dominoes too
I'm challenged when it comes to carpentry, woodworking, hell anything with math really. I wish I had the brain for it. But watching your videos fills that void. Great work Jimmy!
I love the narration. Its always nice to hear how and why you did something.
Through tenons in plywood? OMG that's brilliant.
The more I see Jimmy using that Domino Joiner, the more I want one. I'm going to wind up buying a thousand dollar tool because of this man, aren't I?
Jimmy, thanks for sharing your art with us here on RUclips. I just started a channel. And building my shop and cave from scratch. Very fun. Thanks for all you do.
Very nice!....I like a toolbox with drawers also....No more digging in a deep crevasse of a tool box, to get things, that are buried under other tools....Better for organizing your tools, protecting your tools, and getting at, finding them quickly, when you need them....win, win, win.......great job!
Jimmy, you are a true Master of your craft. I only recently stumbled upon your channel. I am a subscriber now, and I love what you do and how you do it. I've learned a ton watching you work. Thanks for showing all of the small tips.
How anyone could dislike this video is beyond me. I guess there are just some trolls out there who dislike everything - or maybe they are just compensating for their own inabilities to do what you do. Love your Troll Man "comments" in some of your vids, too... please keep doing that!
Nice looking toolbox Jimmy. The dominos really set it off. You make it look easy man.
Love the box! Ya know Jimmy, if you open your metal lid, then open ALL your drawers past a certain threshold, then close the lid, then close the drawers... They'll stay unlocked!
Like the look of the box, nice work, Jimmy!
Excellent idea with the dominoes. Great video. Great commentary. Cheers.
Never heard of the razor cut to avoid blowouts. Brilliant!
+SirBrittanicvs Sure beats a clamped backer but .. there is a scribe line to deal with.
+RapidRrobert Sands out really easy
jkaeklolber Is it that shallow? Like a couple thousandths?
+RapidRrobert The score line will sit right in the interior corner no need to do anything with it.
Pat M Got it, score on the inside of the piece.
Thanks for doing this because me and my grandkid are going to make a tool box for his Dad
I like it when I see old projects or things you've made in past episodes in new episodes. 👍🏻
I seriously almost weep when I watch you work! It's like the wood just bends to your will!
Love the dual function of the domino. It does what it's designed to do, joinery. It also makes a cool decorative element. Great build, as always, Jimmy!
The way you used dominoes is perfectly valid. We dowel all the way through so no reason not to domino all the way through.
sweet! that domino hack is brilliant. makes it so much faster to use them!
+Laura Kampf my name
Beautiful! I like your idea using the dominos as visible fasteners. Thanks for sharing.
You wait, Festool will start advertising your "exposed domino joinery" soon. I think it looks cool. You are an outstanding craftsman. You deserve a bigger shop, fingers crossed.
one talented individual u r Mr Diresta your videos are amazing as is your skill at making things truly amazed
Your stop idea is brilliant.
great work jimmy ! good craftmanship
Back in France, I used a lot of Festool's power tools and never knew how popular or expensive they were. I never liked their screw guns or drill motors, Way Too Heavy. Back in the states and knowing the cost of Festool especially their routers and Domino I have never had the interest in onwing either. I do however do have their rectangular orbital sander a copy of the old Rockwell sander. BUT Now seeing how you used the Domino not only for its strengthening feature but also for its decorative value I'm giving it purchase a second thought just for that purpose. Genius Idea my man. Festool should give you a commendation for discovering another valuable use for this pricy power tool. Well Done. Oh and a nice-looking toolbox.
Awesome, this is the first toolbox video that got me :) thank you very mich for sharing. I will be happy to adapt the idea of how you divided the compartments when I create my version of the box. Above that, I appreciate the level of precision you create, just by using your eyes and hands. Be blessed and all the best!
Another great. I like how you talk about the type of material and dimensions
totally liking that revealed domino. it's like a series of through tenons. the way you did the lid is definitely something I'm going to do in the future. nice work!
Love the combination of the finger joints and the dominos, another awesome video Mr Diresta
I relay like the look of the domino joints I have never seen them used that way. Boy do I ever wish I could afford one.
sounds like you were sick when doing the voice over, respect for carrying on. Nice project too
Very good video. Thank you for showing take care Michael.
you have just shown me what is have been looking for. for a long time thanks
I like what you have done with this toolbox!
genius use of dominoes - nicely done
Great looking toolbox, Jimmy
Jimmy, I am new to your channel, at first I loved the simplicity of the how you filmed the projects with no sound and fast forwarding the boring stuff. Now I am watching some of your other videos and you are doing a play by play of the action.... I must admit I like the talking version better. More of the thinking process / artistry is shared with the audience when you talk. you have inspired me to modify some of things that are a daily frustration to me. thx
Great looking box Mr, Diresta.
love watching you work, don't know why. nice tool box.
NICE. Thanks Jimmy. Always a pleasure to watch you work.
I have watched this video so many times. One of my favourite videos.
I really like the idea of using the Dominoe to make a through tenon look!
Great looking tool box! Thanks for sharing
Jimmy, great idea on the domino as a "nail". I think it is a good look, especially with the box joints. Gives the toolbox just that little extra detail to make it stand out. Also great idea on the long sanding stick for the top! I will be adding that to my bag of tricks.
I said it on Instagram, but I really do like the dominoes as a design element. Looks very cool!
Get well soon Jimmy! Having a cold or being sick is never fun :( Love all your videos you make, you are one of my favorite diy craftsmen!
great to see you still working with such passion & making the extra effort to make those relief cuts yet still experimenting ( although Im sure those dominos add untold strength ) & building freely .
awesome job Jimmy 😃
Mr Diresta.. You never seize to amaze and inspire me! Thank you!
i hate having to lift the lid to open the drawers...good tip with the chopping little pieces in the hinge mortises .looks great!
Really Nice upgrade ! I do like the look of the exposed domino!!
Very nice, Jimmy. I have a similar metal toolbox to the one you describe and the drawers that auto lock with the lid are so annoying. I also have a wooden toolbox that was made by a German cabinetmaker around 100 years ago and though it is cool it is such a pain to have to dig through all the layers. The drawers will make this so much more handy. Thanks for sharing, Scott
just what a great tool box and like the commentary too it all helps thanks
i love watching you work jimmy.
"I know I'm going to get a letter from Festool" - hilarious. Awesome build as always. I can never get enough of your work :)
This is a beautiful tool box, it's given me an idea for my carving chisel's,I love the way you describe your methods well done
What a beautiful box, I love your amazing craftsmanship. Thank you for your amazing video
Absolutely great master DiResta.
very good video. I have watched dozens of your builds, and I was a bit surprised this time, I had never heard your voice at less than chipmunk speed before. very nice box. I really enjoy your builds. I like how you take a completely unconventional view on design so often.
Great video to wach. I like the fact that you make videos where you talk while you`re making something, or when you just let us wach and learn. Greetings Koos
Do not have may own shop, but i`am still learning a lot.
Really nice work. Appreciate you sharing it.
I enjoyed the video. Amazing job. A tool box you could put in the dining room or the back of a pickup.
Even though that is not the way to use a biscuit jointer and you know that but the looks very cool. I have a biscuit jointer and have never really used it but to use it the way you did will make me want to use it now. Thanks for sharing and awesome build.
Hey Jimmy awesome video brother just as a FYI on those metal toolboxs you talked about on the ones that I've used if you open up the lid then pull out all the drawers then shut the lid the drawers or stay unlocked locked, just throwen that out there to you!
Great video Jimmy! Love the razor cut idea for those box joints!
Awesome, good quality work with a lot of detail
The exposed dominoes is a great feature. Very nice design.
Love the look of the dominos! Adds a great touch of class in my opinion. Killer tool case my friend.
he makes everthing look so easy.. wish i could build this good..
