Stuff we use:
CAMERA - This is the camera we have used to film 90+% of our interviews (over 200 interviews and counting) It continues to be our workhorse - amzn.to/2u66V1J
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

More thoughts on artists and the day job: ow.ly/fRwD30rh3SZ
I agree with him;if you have no money in the bank for say 3 months or more to support yourself, or family- changing horses mid stream maybe dangerous -on the other hand if you have savings- you can tell the said 'company' adios, and get into whatever you want. These days 2020- I would say- stay putt if you have a job and work at it at home- I did that and it works if you have time, interest and a quote place- the toilet/ office/ garage/ . I studied all that I know, online from 1999-and online then-was not like now- so go for it .Also 'back then ' ones options to get a film SEEN is almost impossible -now-from HOME-we have RUclips, Vimeo, Tic Tac,etc., you can start small and make small and learn. Income from it? That is another matter.
Map out a plan and invision that plan 5 years, 5 months, 5 days, and 1 hour from now. What a great statement for us filmmakers who lost their job in 2020 and are setting out on new directions.
My favorite part of the whole thing. His story was great by the way.
I would go with 6 hours, 6 days, 6 months & 6 years...I don't like uneven numbers.
I'm weird that way.
@@andershjsted2989 posted 6 months ago as I'm reading it lol
And Pre-Filmmakers who are finding their way in 2021!!
Firstly, I just cannot thank you enough for this interview. These days I've been really struggling with my day job to find time to write, so I find this extremely accurate. Secondly, I'd like to have the chance to see more screenwriters address this question of "dealing with your day job".
Thank you so much, Ivan. Glad the video has been helpful. Sorry to hear about the struggles with your current job. We have a playlist here on RUclips with other writers, actors, etc. on the topic. Stay safe and hope all is well! Best, Film Courage - ow.ly/jX3f30rh3Yl
I agree, I’ve been trying to figure that out for years, I would really like to know how can artist manage their day jobs while working in film.
This taught me a very straightforward way of laying out a vision plan and to be discerning of people who might want me to fail. Keeping in mind that failures are to be expected as lessons for growth, its important to know the difference between unavoidable failures that serve as teaching tools and part of the journey of life, and avoidable failures instigated by malicious persons and institutions.
What did this video teach me? First, ever since the age of 6 ( and I am seventy now), I had always followed a 3 year, 3 month, 3-week goal setting process that telescoped into each other. I know how demanding and yet doable the 5 years, 5 months, 5 days, and 1 hour regimen suggested here is. The implied message is to think of oneself to be a Solo artist performing daily one act plays that rings the cash register daily. No applause, no income. Once one is able to create such a prototype business model, we can be our own boss. Perhaps cultivating that single minded aptitude and attitude is the foremost performance challenge . I should have my book out in the next 3 months. The clock is ticking away!
I *literally* needed this video right now 😅😋
Me too!
You know…I’ve been listening to these film courage videos on a binge lately. A lot of the videos I find very inspiring and encouraging but I found this mans story to be very sad. You can feel the pain in his voice when he does some of his retelling.
Be in the right place at the right time! Cheers Film Courage!!
For those out there who hate corporations this is a perfect way to not be affected by a big business. There are no businesses out there created to make more money for the person working than for the ones who put up all the money and everything else.
I'm ready to go hard !!
Amazing advices and points of view. I truly like it and it motivates me a lot to just focus on my own doing and never stop dreaming...
I truly resonate with his mindset on embodying the work and the dream.
Difficult question... if you have decent coworkers, pay and it fits into your life...hard to quit. But if you work hard for getting support for your creative endeavor... make sure its at least getting you a trickle of cash flow. Then possibly a lack of a secure income will MOTIVATE you to work and create that much more.
This interview helped me in others areas besides filmmaking. 💕 I love this channel.
Take calculated risk. Work in a part time job and pay your bills. And follow your dreams ...make sure u don't get married. If if u do your spouse must support you or else she must be independently working in a job
Another Film Courage episode coming through right when I'm having a hard time figuring something out. Thank you for the answer and for teaching me how to find the answer myself going forward.
Love this channel. 👌♥️Great content, really helpful information and advice.x
1 step at a time .
Thanks!
Fuck that day job.
I got my own capital. Plenty of room to play. Have a nice one. Hope life gets better.
17:15 Wrong place, wrong time OR right place, wrong time?
What did this video teach you?
Stay focused on your dreams but have a plan
I got value out of him suggesting to write out a vision plan on what 5years looks like and break it down to the executable moment WHILE on your job THEN transition into full time.
