  • I don't release an extra off-day analysis on this channel very often - and when I do, it's because the artist hits me in such a way that I want to share it with all of you as immediately as those emotions have tapped me. I can't wait. Dianne is a truly operatic singer surrounded by the melodic symphony of metal, and this journey is something I don't think can wait. Enjoy!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Dianne Van Giersbergen featuring Arjen Lucassen performing "A Symphonic Tragedy" for the first time.

Elizabeth it's been so much fun watching you listen to more and more styles of metal music over these last few years. Watching your appreciation for metal grow, symphonic and operatic metal in particular, is almost like looking through a lens into my own exploration of metal as a teenager. I can see it in your body language and your facial expressions when the music starts to give you that power inside, that "YES 💪 *fistpump*" feeling. Makes it harder for you to sit still, your eyebrows raise and you get a huge grin on your face from the anticipation of whats coming up next in the song. And I really love it because that's exactly what it does to me and im sure its the same for many other metalheads. And with your vast knowledge of music, you show me so many other reasons to appreciate the music that I already love, making me love it even more. So thank you E, for all of your hard work, and for everything that you do 🤘❤️🎤

It’s been a long journey but I feel like the songs she is putting out right now are really showing off her amazing symphonic metal singing and musicianship again - she is up there with Tarja for me in this genre as my fave operatic goddesses ❤

Elizabeth! You really really need to give The Gathering (fronted by Anneke Van Giersbergen) a good listen: Travel, In Motion, On Most Surfaces, Leaves, The Earth is My Witness to name a few tracks. She inspired Floor Jensen to be a frontwoman in metal. She has one of the most amazing and unique voices in European metal. Cannot recommend enough. Her voice when she was younger was unmatched and she seems to only get better with age. She recently did a show with Marko Hietala!

Dianne is without a doubt one of the best symphonic metal singers. Xandria was on track to become as big as Epica or Nightwish, but they nearly ended after they messed things up with her, and every single aspect of her performances are next level incredible and proffesional both in her sound, stage prescence and facial expresions (best in the genre in my opinion) without ever overdoing things. I still hope she becomes as big as she should be, up there with the big names of the scene

Dianne is so good here. i love her band, Ex Libris, and especially the "Ann" trilogy. she was awesome in Xandria too.
i'd love to see you do a reaction to the new Seven Spires song, Architect of Creation. i think you'd love Adrienne's voice.
or, as i know you're a big DnD nerd, the band Fellowship, and especially their song "Until the Fire Dies".

The correct way to write her name is Dianne van Giersbergen. The surname prefix 'van' is not capitalized in Dutch names, unless the surname is written without the first name. :)

So good! Only thing missing was a big Floor-type note at the end. It felt like she had room to go just a little higher, and if she had, it would have brought home the glory. But, otherwise, it was spectacular. Loved seeing Elizabeth so happy, too. It was like when you bring an old friend to hang out with your new friends and you want everyone to love them as much as you do. Ha.

Dianne has been on my radar since I think 2011 when I heard the Medea demo by Ex Libris. Absolutely stellar! Was kind of disappointed when the CD dropped because all the life had been produced out of it.
Then Dianne joined Xandria, pretty much blowing up Ex Libris. I got to listen to her live with Xandria in Tilburg. Most excellent! At the entrance there was a sign saying the show was being recorded for a live DVD. Guess what? That live DVD never happened. Then Xandria fired Dianne for the temerity of asking for more rest between concerts, repeating their pattern of abuse towards Lisa and Manuela. Manuela Kraller was one of the prettiest dramatic voices I have ever heard and I really miss her.
Dianne has managed to restart her career, partially thanks to Arjen Lucassen who is the most excellent judge of talent.
I have been subscribed since since your GLS reaction, but this might be my favourite reaction yet!
My favourite opera singer of all time is Gwyneth Jones singing Brunnhilde.

The part that you Elizabeth likes most, where Dianne sings the words symphonic tragedy with layered tracks, the chord progression there, I believe, is exactly the same as in “for the love of the princess” (Braveheart) by James Horner in the build up to the crescendo

Wow this was awesome, and great analysis Elizabeth. I know you’ve checked out Fleshgod Apocalypse already with The Fool (an amazing track), but that doesn’t really showcase their soprano vocalist Veronica. Their song Epilogue is the perfect blend of metal, symphony, and opera that you’re looking for!

Thank you for doing this one, Elizabeth. I love watching you nerd out on things operatic. I think Blackbriar also filmed her previous music video. Speaking of Blackbriar, I'd love to see you react to their latest single, "Moonflower" with Marjana Semkina.

Again another Dutch gem. I’m wondering if the group symphonic metal group Within Temptation with Sharon den Adel is partially the cause of the inspiration for Dutch ladies to go combine beautiful singing with metal. The reason is that within Temptation was really big in the Netherlands since 1996, about the time when people like Floor, Sharon Simone, and Dianne were in their late teens. Also a bit older Anneke van Giersbergen was a Dutch trendsetter for the symphonic metal with a female front woman. I’ve seen all of these women perform with Arjan Lucassen on his projects.

Aaaand that is the singer Xandria couldn't keep for more than one album! 🤦‍♂🤦‍♂
Another Symphonic Metal band that is really worth a look is Illumishade. They came out with an excellent album called Anothe Side of You this year, a little more commercial, but very good, excellent balance of heavier and lighter elements, and Fabienne Erni's vocals freer than ever. Hi, Elizabeth ❤ I'm searching through your channel and I realized you haven't reviewed the best opera metal band THERION. I'm looking forward to watch your video on one of their iconic songs, maybe To Mega Therion or The Rise of Sodom and Gomorrah, although I love so many of their songs, Invincible is definitely one of the best, but I think you'll like a lot of their music. I'd love you to at least check their albums Vovin, Deggial, and Secret of the Runes and you'll get so inspired. I saw you did many symphonic/opera metal reviews, but Therion just rule this genre. Bon apetite ❤😅
