My gosh, did I dodge a bad situation! Just came home from Toyota dealer. Took my 2009 RAV4 in for minor scheduled maintenance. They found the upper idler needed to be replaced. They explained it minimally, but said it was pretty important. I said, fix it. Came home to see if anything on RUclips about this stuff. Your podcast explained why my car was making the noise whenever I started my car cold, and why I once smelled rubber burning! I love my 12 year old car, and have been religious maintaining it. So glad the dealer diagnosed the problem and fixed it before anything catastrophic happened! Thank you.
Glad ya got it fixed! Yeah bad pulley bearings are good to fix sooner than later, I had the first pulley seize on me back when, and that was not fun. Chances are yours was getting there too if ya smelled rubber, means the belt was rubbing on it. But at least it's all done!
Omg! Thank you! I just had replaced the rear calipers and bled the brakes on my gf’s ‘01 Yukon. It had sat for a while and on start it did that and I was worried the booster had blown or something... this is a godsend

Finally found a video that matched what I was hearing. Mine was weird because it wouldn’t start till I was driving but continue to escalate too such a pitch you’d think an alarm was going off. Had people giving me looks on the road. Thankfully I scheduled a appointment at a shop, but have to wait till next week and I don’t have the luxury of borrowing someone else’s car. 7:50
Yup .... I recognise that sound from numerous Ford & Mercedes high mileage vans here in the UK. ...... Things got a bit costly when I used to ignore the high pitch squeals, so I learned to replace the appropriate pulley bearing within a few weeks . Sometimes got a strong metallic smell too , depends what the pulley bearing was attached to ! Thanks for the details audio description ..... VERY helpful 👍😎

Had a monsoon like rainstorm in my city recently and I had no other route home and went through water that covered the bottom half of the tire. I think mine sounds like this now and it’s quite annoying but driving slow windows down you can hear it kick up

I had an idler pulley go bad on my 2003 Toyota 4Runner back in 2016. It made almost the same whining noise that yours does. I called it the “angry cat” sound, because it sounded like a vicious feline ready to pounce on every startup. It had done it a year earlier in 2015, and the mechanic replaced the serpentine belt, and the noise stopped. Almost exactly one year later, in 2016, it came back. It was still my family’s daily driver at the time, so we still drove it some, not realizing how bad it was. It sounded better once it warmed up, but still sounded awful idling. One day, my dad went to take it to the grocery store, and on the way, he smelled rubber smoke. Luckily he was within a mile from home, so he didn’t have far to go. The pulley and belt had finally had it, thankfully the belt didn’t snap and it was still drivable. It went into the mechanic the next day, and it took a while for them to fix it because some of the bolts broke off. It finally got done though, and ran great after. I think the pulley was bad all along, and the first belt replacement just quieted it down. Hope your repair goes well and it’s running good soon!
That's interesting. The previous place did the same with mine! Somehow came to he conclusion that it was the belts. Replaced them, and the sound oddly stopped. Then came back a few months later, and that's when it seized. I was really pissed at them about it, as to how I told them a pulley bearing was bad and they concluded something totally incorrect. They then replaced that pulley and belt for nothing.
That's definitely interesting to me! They must be trying to save on costs by starting with the cheapest possible part. I could appriciate that, but if you know what's wrong with it, they should respect that, since it ends up costing you more time, money, and hassle in the end. That's pretty good that they fixed it for free the next time. I didn't get that deal, but the first time, the belt was original to the car, so it was probably due anyways. Thanks for the reply!
just did my pulley on my 08 CRV.It squeeled bad at first ,then quieted down.After removal i spun it on my finger and it had a rattling sound.So i guess that was the problem.The greese was out of it ,i replaced it and so far alls quiet

I sprayed wd40 just to see if it was something other than just the tensioner or an actual part and it completely stopped for 30 mins.
That's what I have! Sounds like George Jetson's flying car. Fades in & out. Need to locate which pulley. My tensioner pulley has been squeeking intermittently. Hope it's that one and not the water pump.
I am getting an almost “Tone” type of noise between 40-60 mph (at torque converter lock speeds) its almost like that noise but not as high pitched. I can not figure out where it is coming from!! Its driving me crazy. Does not do it n park or at idle, only when it hits that 40-60. If i let off the gas it stops AND if i push the gas it stops, only when I am cruising between 40-60.. ever hearf of something like this? I can not find any answers any where else. Dealer checked tranny and torque converter, says its healthy, cant find a problem..
My 94 Crown Vic does that exact sound, but only when it's colder outside. And once the engine warmed up it stops completely. If I start her up when it's warm outside, it's dead silent

After doing so, problem still remains. Don't know if this is related or not but I feel I vibration in the brake while at a stop sign. If I put the car in neutral or Park, it goes away. My serpentine belt come off of my Pontiac 2002 Sunfire I was looking at the pulleys and rolling them with my hands but the bottom the bottom pulley won't roll when I go to roll it with my hand supposed to be free or is that one supposed to be hard to roll with your hand. Well that's what happens when I drive to New York hun. It just breaks everything while it's there! Bringing it in tomorrow, and I can give good detail of where it is for them. I did notice that the inner edge (facing the timing cover) of that belt looks a little worn. I wonder if it should be replaced. Been on since 2013, and i'd say maybe 60,000 miles on it.
There's no more labor to replace the belt since it has to come off anyway. Well at least there SHOULDN'T be. If they can charge a half hour labor to take the belt out of its cardboard sleeve, they will. The belt should be $20, but they'll triple the price. Still, if $60 is worth 60,000 more miles of peace of mind, then yes.
@@jaykay18 Yeah sounds about right. I know Scotty Kilmer (when he was still good), said that it's not a bad idea to replace the drive belts when the timing belt is replaced, but at the time they were only about 4 and a half years old, so I figured it was still fine. And it seems it was for the time.
Mine happened when ac turns on as well. I can turn it off for about two or three minutes while car warms up and then I won’t hear it again until car cools down.
My 2012 hyuandi Elantra has just started to do this. Hyundai wants to change alternator water pump and all belts. Y’all don’t wanna know what that gonna cost.
My car sounds so darn loud I hit 2 12 in subs and it drowns them out i need it gone edit well sheesh I all ready knew this I need to know how to fix it

Yeah does sound like a bearing issue.
That's what happened to my dart then I lost all power at highway speed then a drunk driver hit me 5 minutes after pulling over

Is that the crankshaft pulley? That one won't turn easily because the engine itself is what turns it. That is normal in that case.

Yeah the belt is probably slipping. But also check the pulleys too and make sure they good too.

It can vary. In my case, it happened at startup and then got less, but was still there, as it ran.

Ac compressor clutch, most can be replaced, much cheaper than replacing the compressor and refilling the refrigerant
