  • I get ready for Sara and my upcoming elk hunt. Hopefully the weather will get a little more western and move them around. I also have to make a loading block for the 58 caliber ball. Come sit around the fire with me and burn some Black Powder.

      The hunt begins today, haven't seen any sign so the looking begins. Gonna check out LO first, not much here. Maybe set some rat traps on the way.

    Buckskin Dave. I really like your Handle, don't know you but, your Handle seems to fit you perfectly.
    I haven't been a subscriber for very long, seems like I was just getting into your channel real good when you dropped from sight. Glad you're back and doing well.
    I know a husband and wife who both took their Cow Elk last year in Arizona with a .58 cal. BP rifle. I've always wanted to do that but, I waited too long. Health issues and, being 75 years old are working against me. I'm anxious to see and hear of your success on this hunt you're preparing for.
    GL and HH.

    I'm confident you're aware of BP speedloaders, but you could shave off a few seconds in the field by pre-measuring powder at home or at the cabin & pouring it into pre-rolled nitrated paper tubes made with cigarette paper. Form the tubes around a dowel of the size that will allow the tube to drop right into the speedloader. When in the field, uncap one end & allow the paper cartridge to drop into the barrel. Uncap the other end, & insert your patch & ball or whatever bullet you've chosen & ram everything home. Cap the nipple & done! Having a pre-made, pre-measured powder charge eliminates that step in the field, less exposure to the elements during loading & most, if not all, of the nitrated paper will be burned when fired. The nitrated paper is delicate enough to split or burst from ramrod pressure, & if not, the percussion cap spark will definitely burn through for proper ignition. Only concern I have is with patent breech barrels. What's your take on all that? Thx for great videos, Dave!

    • @BuckskinDave
      @BuckskinDave  3 года назад

      I like the pre-load tubes but where I live I have to order them or make them. I have not used the cigarette paper but I bought some to try one day. There are a bunch of ways to get it done, I like the speed tubes tho. Why does the patent breech bother you?

    • @kennbarrett9665
      @kennbarrett9665 3 года назад

      You're right: the patent breech should be of no consequence. Also, you could roll your own tubes with masking paper, pour in your 80 grains (hunting) twist or fold closed. (The pattern is based on Civil War paper cartridges.)Then in the field you'd only need to tear open a tube, dump the pre-measured powder; use your new loading or bullet block & ram patch & ball home. I agree with you on the Wonder Lube - great stuff!
      Looks like excellent coffee there! Don't mind if I do. It's super how you keep that simple too. Love it!
      A coned muzzle would eliminate the need for a short starter without affecting accuracy.

    Hey (hay?) Dave, you ol' "decarbonated PAISANO" you! If you'll pour me a "Beek cup of Dave"(not Joe poleaze!), give me a large platter of "LUTEFISK" too! That'll make a "REAL MAN" out of ya! If you're a real man already, it'll make you into a "WHIMP"! Please send me a chip from your loading block, so I can be "a CHIP off the ol' block" & ask some big guy knock it off my shoulder! THANKS for allowing me to share some coffee & "goot times" with ya! " Ach du lieber, mein schatz"! " Gesundheit"!!!
