- In the 7th generation Golf R, Volkswagen have stuck to the same formula as in the previous version: a beefed up 2.0 litre turbo, borrowed from the GTI and tweaked to produce over 200kW.
We got hold of VW's most powerful Golf ever and tried to find out, is this supergolf really worth the incredible price sticker?

Great review! This is easily the best review I've seen for the Golf R this it's release.
the performance de-tune has to do with the quality of the gasoline
in EU there are premium high octane fuels almost at every gas station
in SA you dont have the consistent quality everywhere
if the climate was really the problem
they just fit a bigger cooling system like they do in dubai and such

I have! I was there July 2011 for my honeymoon. We were there for several days (checking out the sites and Camps Bay etc), before hiring a car and driving ourselves to Franschhoek.

Nice review. Would have been better if you had actually driven the OPC, with its mechanical diff and Hyperstrut suspension, before presuming it torque steers.

Cool review, one of the best ive seen so far. BTW I dont think we can blame the heat. Our fuel quality is below par compared to Europe. I think thats the reason we get the detuned version.
Hey there, thanks for the comment. We asked VW South Africa why the car was detuned and they told us it was put hot climate, but it might be worth investigating the fuel angle.
Cars.co.za considering they also call the US a hot weather climate (though it's generally cooler than most of Europe) I call BS on that whole idea. There has to be another reason. Still, it's good that they can give the same performance figures globally, even with less power. Regardless, it's a truly awesome car, a return to form for VW. Now we just have to wait and see if the R400 or a VR6T Golf comes to fruition. My money is on the former, but my heart is set on the latter.

Savvas Vezyridis It's two shots combined. One is a drive-by, the other is taken when the car is at a stand still while the camera pans slightly.
Either that or a glitch in the matrix.

Great review. Golf 7 R has a monster engine but so dull, it stands out no more than a 1.4 Polo trendline.

That's all fine and dandy... until you realize you can get a multitude of much sportier, better looking, and more prestigious cars for the same price. e.g. a good used Porsche Cayman or Cayman S with low KM's will run a similar price.
and then what do you do when you have a family +YouAreOut?
