While I understand why the “Reunion” voices weren’t hitting, I will say you’ve got to give Cloud’s scenes a watch from that game because Cody Christian absolutely *nailed* young Cloud, like he did with adult Cloud in “Remake”, and I’m excited to hear more of how he’ll voice Cloud in the Nibelheim flashback in “Rebirth”.
I feel so bad for Zach's current VA. The guy is definitely trying, but he's struggling to fit the character. I remember there were fans that were LIVID to the point I saw petitions to get the original actor back. The thing is, I see what they were going for when they were casting for Zach. From what you see of him in the OG FF7, you get the vibe he's got the optimism and charisma set to 11. So for the ReMake saga they wanted him to sound like.... Sonic the Hedgehog... but that doesn't really work when things get emotionally heavy. Plus, PSP CC exists, and the VA in that raised the bar for how Zach should sound by MILES.
to me the way he voice acts zack makes me painfully aware that he's reading lines if that makes sense? It feels like he's putting too much effort into trying to mimic the original va or something and that's causing him to slip on the actual acting part

Some people complained about the DMW interrupting combat, but I felt the system was super effective. Essentially limit breaks and summons are tied to Zack's mood, and the slots are more weighted in your favor in impactful story moments. They also play flashbacks of the characters featured on the slots. And this all come to its full concept in the final sequence, where all of the characters play in sequence as Zack fights for his life, before slowly breaking, showing Zack's waning spirit, before it finally locks on Aerith... It's not just the final cutscenes, the entire combat sequence sells that moment so damn hard.
Also the fact that the DMW system is inextricably tied to the plot of SOLDIERS having the Copy Ability which Zack is using to borrow skills from everyone else over the whole game only to, at the end, use the same Copy Ability to turn Cloud into a Zack Copy the same way that Genesis and Angeal were doing. Which is why Cloud's brain is all fucked up, because he is rolling a slot machine inside his head 24/7 and every time he hits a jackpot he has a mental breakdown.
Aaaaw, I'm So sad that the cutscene compilation skipped the whole sequence of having a jack pot of all the characters in the Hud and playing a compilation of Zack's memories of this people as like they are fading away during the Final battle against the soldiers. The build up of playing each one by one and with each one disapearing until it is a broken Slot machine with only in itAerith is like one of the coolest combinations of story and gameplay elemets I seen in a game. It seels the ending so much for me.
I am so happy you’re watching this. Crisis Core is one of my favourite final fantasy games. It’s been a while since I watched the cutscenes, and I noticed a lot more stuff during this watch through. Like at the end with Zack. I noticed someone flying down and realized that, it’s Angeal bringing zack into the life stream. Watching this again made me remember how much this game had a grip on me when I was younger. I’m glad that you decided to do this Penny.
Just reaching the end and the compiler is insane for cutting out the rest of the final fight and the DMW failing. I was psyched to see Penny react to that. WTF?

Funny you mentioned recently playing through the original FFVII, I recently finished it myself two years ago on my Switch. I use to have the original compilation disks on the PS1, but for whatever reason, the memory card wasn't saving any of the progress, so I couldn't play the rest of the game. I finally took bought the Switch port after they announced Sephiroth for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and was finally able to complete the whole game.
Penny, if you're going All In on FF7 and somehow have time you also need to watch Dirge of Cerebus cutscenes (just under 4 hours) and when doing the Remake replay make sure you also do the Yuffie DLC after (about 5-7 hours.) The later I think is a must because it's really good and recontextualizes Yuffie with how the new remake is going to use her.
Ah by the way, Zack and aerith are about 16/17 when they first meet. If I'm remembering correctly since Zack is 2 years older than cloud and aerith is one year older than cloud. So it's like "big strong man and he's my age!"

This game's story is weird. Everything that originated in the OG FF7 like Zach, Sephiroth, and Cloud, is great, but CC-original characters feel so poorly written. Genesis: A drama kid that either wants to save himself and get another chance at being a hero, or destroy the whole world out of spite, or become the guardian of the planet. All three motivations revolve around Loveless, a play he recites constantly to the point you don't know what he's talking about. Angeal: A chad that's all about honor, but it's never clear what his goal is. You could argue he chooses to be a neutral party, using his "copy" abilities on beasts to have an army that can prevent Genesis from doing anything too bad until Zach can succeed him. Hollander: A mad scientist that surprisingly has very little presence in the story. Genesis repeatedly changes his mind if he wants to kill him or not and his story ends with an unclimactic fight. Lazard: On the surface, a high-level Shinra employee that turns on Shinra for no reason. There is an NPC in Midgar that hints he's President Shinra's illegitimate son and he wants to get revenge on the CEO-father who abandoned him and his mother. But that's never brought up in the main story. When Zach meets him again, Lazard only says he "wants to save the world" and he let Angeal copy his traits on him for some reason. Maybe this was due to the constraints of the PSP, but a lot of things could have gone into more detail. The whole "are SOLDIERs heroes or monsters" dilemma seems awkward. From how it's presented, Angeal and Genesis only think they're monsters because they have wings. Sure they also have the ability to make genetic copies of themselves and maybe they hate Shinra for making them weird weapons of war, but it's only brought up like once. The wings are their main argument they don't consider themselves human. Also, they could have shown more of the "copy" power in action. Like have a scene during one of Genesis's attacks on Shinra, and he turns opposing Shinra SOLDIERS into copies of himself. The Goddess Materia is also random as hell. Genesis comes to the conclusion its real out of nowhere.

I think it might have related to ccrs voice director actually. His performance is ages ahead in rebirth along with sephiroths

I'm honestly quite surprised they skipped it, considering they showed a lot of other gameplay and that final section is completely scripted out
