I worked on a water pipeline and boreholes there 5 years ago . Lovely people live there . The butcher makes the best biltong I ve tasted . Sorry you missed the hotel .Was a hospital during the Boer War . Sure it is haunted . Lovely old photos from that time , and of the first steam train that came there . They close and lock up at 19:00 if there are no people in the bar. Then I was all alone with the ghosts . Loved it . Thanx to the peope there that made my stay so good .

Founded in 1873, the town was initially named Maraisburg. To avoid confusion with the Gauteng area of Maraisburg it was renamed Hofmeyr in 1911 in honour of Jan Hendrik Hofmeyr (Onze Jan), a campaigner for the equal treatment of Afrikaans and English and a prominent figure in the Eerste Taalbeweging. The main street was called Chalmers Street, renamed to Voortrekker St when the town was renamed.

SA,s little towns are so cool even though they are mostly run down, especially the stations, so sad I wonder if the railways were still functioning( like they used to ) whether you guys would be travelling by train?. I loved that accommodation you stayed at. I too would do the dishes there. Lovely and peaceful thanks again for a great series

    • @DustBugsTravel

😁 Those few dishes took me forever! There were just too many distractions! 🤩 Having recently developed a fascination with old stations and their buildings, we definitely would have done some exploration by rail, no doubt. 🚆 I think it would provide such a different perspective to travelling on roads. I so wish that were still possible, there are certainly enough tracks connecting all these smaller towns. 🛤️ We appreciate you watching! 😊🚗

The Teebus River forms part of the Orange/Fish River water scheme. Water exits the Gariep dam near Oviston and goes underground for about 80 Km's. The "ghost town" of Midshaft can be seen almost half way between Oviston and Steynsburg. Many of the local farmers worked on the scheme to suppliment income due to the severe droughts experienced. The tunnel exits into the Teebus River and goes via Grassridge Dam into the Fish River. Hence, there is always a strong flowing river. Many of the farmers on the Teebus River installed hydro electric plants once the tunnel was completed.

The Hofmeyr family of the Eastern Cape were trailblazers indeed, from farming, to Parliament and also Onze Jan, Jan Hofmeyr, as activist for the indigenous Afrikaans language. Which is why there is a statue of him behind the Groote Kerk in Cape Town. I read a bit about the Hofmeyr legacy a few years ago.

There is that keen artist's eye for detail again! 😁 Interesting observation about the telephone poles. There was no significant breeze that day, so I assume it could be from a previous windstorm or they were just not planted firmly enough, really not sure of the reason. 🤷🏼‍♂️ We thought the church design was stunning too and very different from those we've seen in most towns, both in architecture and colour. 💒 Our tent cabin was fantastic! 🏕️ Fortunately for us, it was still fairly cool, so the mozzies did not come to visit. 🦟😎
