Alexander O'Neal & Cherrelle: "Saturday Love" (written & produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis). 👍🏾
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, former Morris Day and The Time members who grew up with Prince. In fact Prince replaced O'Neal with Morris Day to create The Time out of local band Flyte Time.
Criticize is the song they'll like the best, but you're right that she will like Saturday Love the most.
The beat gave it away. Classic.. mashup with NASTY needs to be done ASAP
You could spend a month just doing songs produced by those 2!!!!!
@@Great-Documentaries Wow!! I didn't know Morris Day replace O'Neal to start the Time's??? This should be on the front comments not a reply👌🏽👍🏽✌🏽
Please react to this song. It is fire.
Yes, "Criticize" and "If You Were Here Tonight" are his next best tunes.
My two faves from Alex
“If you were here tonight” omg what a tune
"Sunshine" also a great song😊
'What's Missing' is another great tune.
Fake is still a-JAM-and has a bad beat too. A song of substance that still pertains to women even today. LOL. Criticize is also a very GOOD song with a nice video.
One of his best is a duet with Cherelle "Saturday Love".
🎶Alexander O'Neil other hit ,Upbeat jam"Criticize" and love song "If you were here tonight" big romantic and smooth hit🎶👍
This is a Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis jam! Hitmakers in the 80’s and 90’s for Janet Jackson, Cherrelle, Human league, etc. members of The Time before Prince fired them for missing a concert…best thing that happened to their career!
And he fired Alex for asking to get paid
I understood it happened as they had done some production work, for the SOS Band, against his wishes.
Years back I went to a joint headline concert of Barry White and Earth Wind & Fire. Barry had to pull out at the last minute because of ill health. It was announced at the packed concert. You can imagine the disappointment in the crowd. As a replacement, Alexander O'Neal was announced. Silence in the crowd. He came on stage, on his own, no band, no backing singers, just him in his suit and a microphone. He belted out his hits, dripping in sweat, got the crowd singing, dancing and cheering, and set everyone up for EWF. The guy was a machine, and turned around a crowd disappointed that Barry White didn't show.
He's boss.
That’s sad that you never got to see Barry White Live ! I was fortunate to get the chance to see Barry White live sponsored By Kiss Cares Concert at Madison sq.Garden NYC .Bryan McKnight, the Gap Band , and Isaac Hayes was the MC
Rob Squad, you guys absolutely nailed it with the review of Alexander O'Neal's song 'Fake'! What a thrill it was to witness such an iconic artist in action. I'll never forget the moment I got to hit the stage and dance alongside him at one of his gigs, and when he reached out to shake my hand, it was pure magic. Growing up in the UK during the 80s and 90s, his music was the soundtrack to countless memories. As he embarks on his farewell tour this year, it's a bittersweet moment for us all. His contribution to the industry and the way he became part of the fabric of British culture is simply remarkable. I'm eagerly anticipating your future explorations of his discography,
Some other AO classics
"Criticize"
"If You Were Here Tonight"
"Saturday Love" (with Cherrelle)
"Never Knew Love Like This"
"What's Missing"
"Sunshine"
"The Lovers"
"All True Man"
"A Broken Heart Can Mend"
“Innocent”
The Legendary Alexander is known as the Ladies Man ! 😘 Have seen Alex live in the UK a fair few times, really great live .... He was probably bigger in the UK than the U.S. and he has a great following. His other Masterpieces include "What's Missing" .... "Criticize" .... The absolute epic "If You Were Here Tonight" (That one is a cert for you to review, please ! ... What a Ballad) .... "All True Man" and his brilliant duets with Cherrelle "Saturday Love" and "Never Knew Love Like This" .... A great artist indeed and he was originally one of Prince's backing singers 👏😉
“Saturday Love” with Cherelle is an 80s pop/R&B classic. Also his other duets with her: “Never Knew Love Like This” and “Everything I Miss At Home”
Love his song Sunshine ❤
I can't believe that in all this time you guys haven't played Alexander O'Neal before. You will definitely like his music. He was the original lead singer of The Time (when they were called Flyte Tyme), but he said he was too hung up on money for Prince's liking, so he was replaced by Morris Day. Check out "Innocent" (the album version if you can), "You Were Meant to Be My Lady (Not My Girl)," "Sunshine," "Criticize," "Used," "Somebody (Changed Your Mind)," and lots more. You will also like "The Rain," by Oran "Juice" Jones, especially when he tells his new ex about herself and sends her packing
True, but Prince was famous for under paying. Morris and others had problems with the money issues.
If you were here tonight is a gem also.
I got his greatest hits..
He was amazing in the 80s and my most favourite is Saturday Love featuring Charelle. I so love playing these tunes in my car and people start to dance to Alexander Oneal
Did you know Alexander O'Neal was the original lead singer of The Time before Morris Day was lead singer and they were The Time that we know now?
He was being considered by Prince but it wasn't a good fit so it didn't happen.
@@lesal.1373actually, that’s not how Morris tells it. “Prince had Alex as the singer and I was cool being the drummer. I had always just been a drummer. But when it came down to it, Alex wanted too much money and he ended up leaving. So Prince asked me ‘why don’t you do it?’ “
@Stevenc1970 I wonder what Alex says.
We know that wasn’t the issue Alexander will explained that
“WHAT’s MISSING” is a MUST Alexander O’Neal song!!! 🔥🔥🔥. Jay, you are right; we had so much going on musically in the 80’s. But the “fake” out there today is off the charts; insane.
Another good tune by Alexander O'Neal - What's Missing
I rediscovered this song maybe about 5 years ago after not hearing it since it was out way back then. I still knew all the words.
That whole album “Hearsay” is straight fire!! Every song on this album you should review!
He has so many good songs. For female Friday, his duet with Cherrlle, Saturday Love, was the jam back in the day.😊
Great song! Thanks for the reaction! Notice how the lyrics are appropriate for today, too? Fake hair, fake lashes, fake nails, fake personalities. Got to love the Prince and The Time influence. He was part of their first band, Flyte Time. Even Morris Day does a cameo at the beginning.
Alexander O'Neal, part of that Minneapolis sound in the 80's. "If You Were Here Tonight" and "A Broken Heart Can Mend" are two good ones.
Alexander O'Neal was huge back when I was in H.S. He and singer Cherrelle used to do duets a lot back then too; one of which was a very popular song called, "Saturday Love". Cherrelle herself was popular too in those days; one of her monster hits was, "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On".
Alexander O'Neil is a part of the Minneapolis sound as well Prince, the group The Time which included , Morris Day, Jesse Johnson , Jimmy Jam And Terry Lewis who were all friends.
"What is this thing called love" GREAT jam!!! "Sunshine" a great slow jam.
Check out his song Criticize
Have they ever done one of your song request?
Yes! I was just going to recommend that as well! Still have this whole album in cassette format...lol!
@@loritajohnson5664 Do you know how to go by sending you a music video request?

I still have "Criticize" on a 45 single...
His song Criticize was my jam.
Another great 80's song is D-Train, "You're The One For Me" has that synth bass thumping!
Saturday love with cherelle is an absolute must
and never knew love like this with cherelle
and criticise of course
Alex O'Neal is one of the 80s greats, no doubt about it!
Oh y’all are 🔥 🔥🔥🔥🔥🎶🎶🎶❤️❤️❤️❤️💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽 been loving him since his career ❤❤❤ him and Cherrelle sang together
My favorite is "If You Were Here Tonight." Such an awesome song!
Thanks for showing the video from my Channel
This whole album was EPIC! When he did duets with Cherelle they were unstoppable.
"Sunshine" is the next to react to by Alexander O'Neal. Beautiful love song.
I loved Alexander O'Neal so much. I named my son Alexander!! ❤❤. About the song, it's about pretending you are something you are not whether it's outside or inside.
Thanks for playing this. I had forgotten about Alexander O'Neal even though I used to have his album.
"Sunshine" by Alexander O'Neal is a GREAT song by him.
I love that song ❤
I come from across the pond and from the 80s. This brilliant artist was played throughout all the clubs and pubs in Birmingham during his peak. Fantastic tunes and what a guy
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis jam. Massive in the UK. The 12 inch version is a banger with extra beats on the b side. His first album is still one of the best debuts I've ever heard.
Such an awesome reaction J&A! Takes me back to my senior year in HS. Heard it nonstop that summer. Big time banger in the clubs too. As others have mentioned, his" Saturday Love" duet with Cherrelle was a banger. I'd also suggest his first big hit" Innocent" ... and a lesser known slow jam "Sunshine".
If you were here tonight is my fave by Alexander
You'll be surprised at "If you were here tonight." Baby makin' music!
Absolutely!
Alexander O'Neal was huge back in the day! I love this song!! I loved the eighties because there was a wide variety of music to choose from and I listened to everything from New Wave to Funk to Metal to Punk!💖💖
❤❤❤❤ me some Al O'Neal!
He is one of Prince's many musical offspring 😂😂
I had the pleasure of going to the Brixton Academy in South East London back in the 80s, great performance, it flew by so quickly, last song he had a bed on the stage with one red rose on the pillow, and a spotlight shiningon it, he pulled a girl from the audience, sat her on the bed and sung to her "if you was here tonight " awesome singer!
This was my song this and Saturday Love
Love Alexander o Neal,Jimmy jam & Terry Lewis produced some big hits in the 80s & 90s,great reaction to a great song ❤❤
A Jam and Lewis production classic!! Alexander O'neal was the original lead singer of the Time, whom you have played before. They were known as Flyte Tyme back then and when Prince got involved with getting them a recording contract, there was a falling out regarding money and Alexander was removed as lead singer and Morris Day was put in his place! Alexander became a great soul singer in the eighties and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis from the Time, produced the bulk of his hits with Fake being one of them!
Alexander O Neal’s “All True Man” another great song!
This was thunder on the dancefloor 👌⚡ especially when the bass was cranking
I’m looking forward to seeing Alexander O’Neal performing live at a local theatre in May, loved all his hits during the 80s and 90s
The entire album this cut is from is banger! The moment I got the alerr this was up I was on it!
He's one of my favourite R&B Singers (80's 90's) .. "If You Were Here Tonight" & "Saturday Love" duet with Cherrelle is a must reaction ... I could name over 20 songs I love by him!!
When I met my wife in The late 80s I was into punk and new wave and she was into Stevie Wonders, Luther Vandross and Alexander O’Neil and we went to see him live a number of times at Wembley, London. His thing was to invite an audience member up on stage and serenade her (of course) and then jump off the stage and run down the aisles and around the audience. My wife was so excited that she actually got to touch him on one of these audience laps. Do ‘Criticize’ next.
It's been a long time since I heard this one!! Late 80's and filled up the dance floor to the max! Great pick!!!!
"Can I get some NASTY bass! It's gonna be kind of right tonight!" Those lines lead into "Fake" the song the shook up the nightclub scene! That's the Minneapolis sound at its finest! I had the pleasure of seeing Alexander (Oh So Good) O'Neal perform this and other songs in venues around the Twin Cities including If you were here tonight, Criticize, What's missing, Innocent and Never Knew Love Like This (Both of these songs with Cherrelle)! Alexander was in the group Flyte Time with Jam and Lewis back in the day...but he was replaced by Morris Day...later becoming "The Time." Another cool fact, Cynthia Johnson was also in Flyte Time. She left the group, went solo and had a Mega Hit "FunkyTown" which was recorded here in Minneapolis! Alexander and Cherrelle are Golden on "Saturday Love" an amazing, up-tempo duet, reaching #2 on the R&B chart and #26 on the Hot-100!! Great memories! 😊👏🏾🎤🎶🎸🥁🎹💯
That was real banger in the clubs those days. But what you also have to do is "Criticize".
Total banger
A few more 80s r&b songs you'd probably like (some acts you've heard before and some you haven't) - The Gap Band - Beep a Freak; Oops Upside Your Head, Humpin; The fatback band - backstrokin’; The S.O.S. Band - Just Be Good To Me, Take Your TIme (Do It Right); Midnight Star - Freak-A-Zoid; Skyy - Call Me
I always love this song! How can anyone sit still listening to this one? I can’t and I didn’t. 😂
Such a great song. Now, you KNOW you have to react to "Saturday Love" ... CHERELLE featuring ALEXANFER O'NEAL. They teamed up on a few great songs.
I mean ... it HAD to be said. This one is just a given 😁
wow the voice is here, saw him a few years back and the after show was amazing, does a great ballad too
HEATWAVE - " Party Suite " you guys heard their 70s Funk and R&B Soul now they've just entered the new decade of ' 1980 ' and the Music just got ever Better and More creative with the vocals and instruments. This is a definite Party song just like the title 🎸 🎺 you guys gonna love this Amazing song and sound
The Force M.D.'s "Tender Love" is another gem written & produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Those two are music production ROYALTY!!
Never heard of him or this song, really cool. RIP Alex. Finally a true song about a woman being fake lol. It needs to be on the radio.
Thank you guys for reacting to Mr Cool Alexander O'neal. Here's some more suggestions
Innocent (1985)
If You Were Here Tonight (1985)
Cherelle (ft Alevander O'neal Saturday Love (1985)
Criticize (1988)
Sunshine (1987)
Thanks again Jay and Amber 😊
This was my JAM!!! Another Jam and Lewis produced joint.
Check out "If You Were Here Tonight". Nice slow song. And the fade at the end is so beautiful.
This was a GREAT CD!
My favorite song by Alexander O'Neal!! I loved how he didn't pull any punches and just flat called her out for being a liar and a fake!!!!! Loved it!! LMAO
Love Jay's reaction to him being called Clyde! 🤣🤣
LMAO!!! L9VE THIIS SONG!! One hit wonder...too funny. Love that "Nasty Bass". Lol
Alexander O'Neal was absolutely huge in the UK. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis produced this R&B classic!
If you were here tonight is another one of his
This was a club song. Back then, on Sunday nights, a lot of clubs had 18 and under night to stay busy on the slowest nights. This song was played a lot in the clubs.
He has a few more hits that i think you would like also, Saturday Love amd Criticise.😊❤️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Alexander O'Neal - Hearsay is another great one.
i love this song.
thank you so much for reacting to this song.
good times to you.
Yesss Alex brings that fire and that funk
A couple of his great ballads were "A Broken Heart Can Mend" and "if You Were Here Tonight". My favorite two club hits of his were "Innocent" and "All True Man"
Alex was a huge part of my 80s soundtrack and I had his debut album on repeat, loving all the “in between” voice intros too! If you want to hear how fantastic his voice is please do “”If you were here tonight”! It’s so amazing and soulful.
And if you want upbeat 80s R&B, you've missed out so far on a band from the mid-80s that channeled Prince as well as anyone called Ready for the World. Start with their 1986 #1 hit Oh Sheila.
Great video as always, thank you
Still relevant. This is my jam! Fake eyelashes, at one time women wore colored contacts, weaves and wigs. Still doing it.
Sentimental from Alexander O'Neil is a great song.
You need to listen to Cherrille and Alexander O'Neal's duet on Saturday Love the 12" version if you can find it. That was one of the hottest singles back then and it is still hot until this day. Once you hear it, you will know what we mean. Great reaction as always.
Checkout his duet, with Cherrelle! ‘Saturday Love’!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Yes criticise and ifyou werehear tonight soooooo soulful and his best sings
The Minneapolis sound in the 80s was everything. Producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis were members of The Time that was formed by Prince. Prince wrote a number of the group's hits. Jam and Lewis wrote many of Janet Jackson's hits as well as other artists like Alexander O'Neal, Cherelle, and The SOS Band. Prince fired Jam and Lewis from The Time when they were working on The SOS Band's album because they missed a concert date due to a rare snowstorm in Atlanta. That departure led to them being one of the biggest hit making duos of that time.
phantastic song, phantastic album. major highlight r/b record.
When i was a young man I was at a night club and this big guy in a suit turned up and performed this and another couple of songs ... had no idea who it was at the time but the guy could sure sing ... Take a bow Mr O'Neal :)
Jay and Amber , u alls dirty cool 😎 tonight indeed you all know how to groove, funky funky love it😀😀✌️
You can try "If You Were Here Tonight" or "Never Knew Love Like This" which is another duet with Cherelle. He also did a great version of 'The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire)".
So glad someone mentioned that Alex was the original lead singer for The Time. And guess who The Time was associated with??? PRINCE!!! So much Prince influence with this track. Just listen to the music on this song. So funky and so Prince/The Time.
I grew up in 70's and 80's, never heard of him. And I'm really into music.
Alexander's whole CD called Hearsay is incredible
IF You Were Here Tonight is a Beautiful Song by Alexander O Neal and my other Favorite Song The Lovers
I forgot about this jam. This is still so baaadddd!!! ❤ love it!
Alex's BEST tune is "What's Missing?" Period
Sunshine by Alexander O'Neal
The majority of Alexander O'Neal music catalog was written by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Who are two artists that were formerly in the group The Time. Long story short, Prince fired them, and this allowed them to become two of the most successful writers/ producers of any genres of any time.
This banger always drove me STRAIGHT to the dancefloor back in the day!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
