    Super build and great clear commentary. The Airfix P40 is a little gem in this scale.

    Very nice build Gary. Have almost finished building this kit myself and will be following it up with the 1:72 scale Zero. Keep up the good work on the channel 👍

    I am glad you had the same wing-root gap issue I had with this kit, with your gap distance appearing to be identical to mine
    I watched 3 build vids, where it is not reported. So I thought It was me doing something wrong.

      Glad to be of service...? To be honest, I did wonder if I had messed something up somewhere, given such a wide gap when everything else seemed to go together pretty well.

      It is, a bit under-valued against the usual run of European single-seaters but a very good model indeed.

    First kit getting back into the hobby after almost 40 years. Found this one reduced to $2.50 at a store, box was smashed a bit, but everything inside was just fine.

      That's a real bargain, well done! It's a great little kit to get back into the hobby with.

      @@garys_stuff thanks! Yeah I'm quite impressed with the results, perfect kit for a beginner/someone getting back into it. I have a good looking little model now. Spilled a bottle of micro sol on the decal sheet though, ugh! Still looks awesome minus a few decals.
      Upper cowling needed some sanding and filling along with the usual spots (wing roots particularly), but nothing that made me say "this is crap!". Very good kit especially at the price. Side note, first kit I've seen with flat spots on the tires, I thought that was genius and why dont they all make them like that!

    Nice Job.Really enjoyed the upload.I.will look into getting this kit as I do like the P40...The history of the plane was interesting that it was a survivor of Pearl Harbour and is still flying today and is the kit of that plane..Great Job I look forward to your next upload..

    Nice build, the Tomahawk was the last kit i made 22 years ago, i just got back into the hobby about a month ago, i didn't know there were aluminium versions of this so I'm going to get this kit and see what it looks like (not accurate i know) but i love how aluminium aircraft look, great narration by the way very clear.

      @garys_stuff  2 года назад +1

      Cheers Eddie and welcome back to model making! That aluminium on his (I think) a P-41C in that it has the bomb rack/fuel tank mounting. That photo comes form the Duxford Flying Legends Show in 2017. It does look very smart in bare metal!

    Just getting back into building kits after being away from the hobby maybe… wow… thirty years or so. I bought this kit and I’m looking forward to starting it. Great vid!
    I’m curious: how difficult was masking the cockpit and fuselage?

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  2 года назад +3

      The fuselage is not difficult at all. I use a thin (2 or 3mm wide) vinyl tape to get the line right as that is easier to make curves with. Then just bits of Frog tape. The canopy is really easy provided you have a very sharp tip to the blade in your craft knife - I always use a fresh No.11 blade, I know some others use scalpel blades. When you've used it for this, put it away safely for the next time!
      I lay down some masking tape, then press it onto the windows and use the point of a wooden cocktail stick or similar to really get into the frame lines. This makes it a lot easier to follow the edges with the knife. Don't cut with too much pressure, let the sharpness do the work. Generally takes me about 15-20 minutes for a fighter like this.
      For the Zero I'm doing right now I've used vinyl tape for the canopy as I find it cuts really cleanly, but it doesn't allow you to nudge little corners like fibre-based tape does. Maybe I should do a video about all this!
      Do also check out on YT for other people's ideas. These are just what work for me, there may be better ways out there!
      For bigger builds (I've got a B-17 coming soon) I buy a pre-cut set of masks.
      Best of luck with the P-40 and welcome back to the fine world of model making!!!

      @@garys_stuff - Thanks so much for the reply! Really handy ideas and I’ll be sure to try them. I’ve just been gathering some supplies and kits - grabbed an inexpensive airbrush after watching a review on YT - and building up glues, brushes, decal solution, etc. Some basic paints and I’ll be ready to start.

    How did you do those underside masks Gary? Did you trace over with pencil and cut them out? Thanks!!

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  2 года назад

      Which masks are those? On the P-40 it was just tape - thin flexible tape to get the curves then thicker tape to fill in. I'm doing a Wildcat next, so I'll show the masking of the lower parts.
