Good effort, I’ve got this in the sash and it’s good to see someone else having a go at it. Always good to see Commonwealth P40s being built as opposed to the plethora of US ones.
I’d suggest wiping down the model with ipa and then use Tamiya primer. This would stop paint lifting when unmasking. Also blutac can leave oily marks behind but white tax doesn’t👍 Dropper bottle paints especially acrylic needs a vigorous shake, then another and another😂 Nice job 👍👍
I'm confused - not a challenge, OK more confused than usual :) The brown on the model looks like dark green to me? Ref decal alignment, they're usually shown on the plans relative to panel lines, so I'd just go by that :) [Edit: Having posted that now it does look light brown and dark green.. lighting/ camera issue? In the third chapter onward the brown looks like brown. No I was right the first time. At 08:30 you said the brown had chipped but it looks like light green has chipped?]
As for hataka paint i got some serious issues witg B029 german blue and B072 soviet blue. I was unable to mix like you've said. As for B029 shop replacesd with paint from another batch and all went ok. For B072 first shop offered refund for 17ml bottle so i got 10ml from another shop with same result...and I've ended up with Vallejo Air replacement. There must have been some incident in manufacturing some time ago....
I just built one in 1/48. The paint and marking options are for USAAF Pearl Harbour and AVG Flying Tigers. I took the latter and must say, it is a great kit. Apart from the minor flaw that the chinese markings are wrong 😂. I built the 1/72 directly afterwards and it was a fun little kit, too, especially for the price.
A really nice little kit. I am finishing up my third one right now. Just need the stand alone US version to complete the set. I have completed the US version as part of the dogfight doubles set. I hope Airfix comes out with a Warhawk/P40E version in the near future.
Feel your pain with the paint. In fairness to Hataka, that is the Blue range, which is meant for brush painting - the Red line is for airbrush but brush paints fine. If you like P-40s try the Special Hobby one as it's got a lot more finesse in the detailing and is also really straightforward to build.
I absolutely get that this is the Blue line. I bought them before I had an airbrush so they will have to do. This however, is not relevant to the green failing as it is an issue with the paint itself, regardless of how it is applied. I will be getting more P-40s at some point, in the past I made a few academy ones but will happily take your recommendation for Special Hobby, thanks.
Hataka blue are meant for paintbrush, you can airbrush with them quite ok, best to thin with hataka thinner and bit of Vallejo flow improver. Still your results will vary depending on colour of paint. Some colours spray ok, and other clog your airbrush. Hataka red are considered bit pointles as the are nogood for brush and offer similar sensations when airbrushing. Hataka orange is proper airbrush paint :-)
Hey mate, just had a question, seeing as you mention you have several P40 kits in inventory; I'm eyeing off one of the Italeri 1/48 P40 kits, and I was wondering if you had any experience/opinions on them?
@matthewn4896 Hi. I've not got an Italeri P-40 as my opinion of Italeri is a bit mixed. They are usually mediocre - fine to build but just a bit underwhelming. Every now and again they'll really surprise me with a decent kit but mostly I just avoid them and go for another brand. (I have recently finished an Italeri Jaguar that reconfirmed my feelings about them)
Off topic, but do you have a Puss Moth in your collection? LF Models just re-released a DH.80 boxing from AVI Models. I have float plane version in my stash.
Yes, I have the AVI Puss Moth in my collection. I bought and built it when first released in 2020. I'm sure I will show off my De Havilland collection at some point in the channel

Nicely recovered.I like it.
Great little kit...done 2 of them myself
It really is. Built 2 myself and have a 3rd I intend to do in AVG colours.
It looks absolutely fine brush painted to me!
nice build thanks lee

I do usually spray my kits with a primer. I don't know why I didn't this time!
nicely done VFC, built the 1/48th version - fantastic fitting kit

So, I'm not the only one having a fight with some of those Hataka paints.

One of my fav planes! Yours looks awesome :)
Thank you! I'm sure there will be more P-40s on the channel in due course
🛩👍
Dont worrry about the chipped paint.. its a combat aircraft after all so its not going to be clean and tidy if it has been in battle
