This is an intriguing lens...I might give it another look if my first foray into "wide" angle (20mm FF) turns out to be something I want to continue further on.
I bought the 9mm Laowa e-mount lens after seeing your video a few years ago. Only problem is that it IS manual focus. Maybe I will upgrade! FYI I only buy FE lenses for my a6400/a6700, so this is great! Even though there is a some fuzziness in the corners, on an APS-C a6xxx, that is OK since probably much will be out of the frame. Sure wish you had tried it on an a6700. Lens and grip clearance? About the Laowa 9mm. After I bought it and used it, the perspective distortion was too much. I found a mint Canon 24mm TS II (not the lesser grade TS I version) and a Metabones FD to e-mount adapter on eBay. Total cost was about $2000, but there is NO perspective distortion. However, it is NOT autofocus. This new 10mm autofocus from Laowa is just not quite there yet...I'll wait for Laowa to make a shift version of this! I know there is the 15mm Laowa shift MANUAL focus macro. Using this on a tall building is a no-no. One note is that on the a6xxx cameras the e-mount flange diameter is about 1mm TOO SMALL to engage gaskets on FE e-mount lenses! Not the same size OD as on the FE cameras which have about a 1 to 2mm larger diameter! Minor Sony design blunder.
Nice short review. I love these UWLses. But in one part of your video I saw that the extreme corner are very soft, not to say unsharp. Therefore I will stay with my beloved Sigma 14-24mm 2,8, which is a great lens.
Not a waste with FE on APS-c. Lets you use the camera on a Sony AR7V FE AND a APS-C like the a6700. ALL my lenses I use with my APS-C are Sony GM FE except for the kit lens that came with the camera. makes for easy transition to FE camera.
I wonder if this would be a great holiday/family event lens... not too much need to aim so you can capture the experience without being taken out of it, a bit like 360 cameras do.
What an achievement from Laowa ! You were right to put it to the test, because this is a very serious proposition. I'd gladly go for it if I were to own a 24×36 mm sensor camera. But even owners of 16×24 sensor ones can consider it, after all a 15 mm focal equivalent with such quality and AF system... rare enough to be mentioned. Have you already have a look at new offerings from Yongnuo ? They have a new 11 mm for 16×24 sensors, and it comes with a remote control (for focus and/or aperture, but I would not affirm) and is supposed to be way better than anything this brand has offered so far. Probably other lenses with that same remote system will be released soon, but I have yet to see serious information about it. Thank you, once again. ✋️🙂
Well screenshot the sample images in the video and crop in 2/3 the length of each side, then you have the APS-C crop. Other than the crop there's nothing really special about putting an APS-C sensor behind the lens.
Astrophotography on A7R could use this lens greatly. Wide field of view, and if you need to crop, you have a lot of megapixels to play with. Yes, very wide for large milkyway shots, all of Bernard's Loop and the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, entire constellations, etc. Time-lapse video of the Milkyway traveling across the sky would be fun. Also, the great thing about the 10mm is the increased duration of a single exposure. Now, it won't be great for smaller objects and deepsky observations.
btw: Autofocus just supported on Nikon / Sony mount. Canon mount is manual focus (Canon is said to be very protective towards 3rd party usage of their mount)
Sony mirrorless cameras has built-in Sharpen. It can't be switched off. You must put this into account when making any reviews with Sony. BTW, I've found almost the same behavior in my Fuji X-T3 but it's only for photographs in JPEG. Sony does the trick for RAW(!)
You have any source for that? Personally I've never seen any hint of sharpening on neither my A7 or A7III, and I can't find anything online about this.
@@gurratell7326 hmmm... I've heard (and seen most probably) mentioning this in videos from Olegasphoto channel. He tells in Russian tough. It's clear when you compare with photographs from Fujifilm for example. Their kit lenses are well known for the very good quality. But these lenses doesn't give you a very sharp picture if you'll process RAFs in LightRoom (with Sharpen set to 0) or in Darktable. They looks naturally "soft" in a lot of conditions. Of course it depends highly on the sun (or lights) direction and daytime! P.S. I'm not telling that Sony cameras gives you bad photographs. But it's the important detail!
"Never need AF with this length" first of all that's something you say because you haven't tried using wide-angle very close to subjects where you don't have infinite DoF. Secondly you can technically say "never need AF" for any lens, if you have time to manually focus all the time. But guess what, sometimes focusing manually is too slow.
Looks crazy enough to want it, but the $799 price is not something I'm willing to pay for a little bit ultrawide fun. The manufacturer should understand that's it's a fun lens, not an essential one, they should have priced it at $400-500 max, and perhaps they will if the sales turn out to be dismal.
The fact that this can even take a front filter is wild.
I did not know Hoovi's garage does lens reviews too.
This is a cause for celebration 🎉. Go Laowa!!! What a big win.
very glad to see your videos!

I'm not into the wide angle lens field but this looks like a really good one!
That's a great, efficient video as well, you alwayd deliver!
With cropping this could be interesting as an alternative for a shift lens. Especially on an 60mp R body.
Can you try this lens on the Sony zv-e1
10mm AF FF is NUTS.
Impressive model
Excellent! Can you please do a review on Viltrox 27mm F1.2 for Sony?
Nice short review. I love these UWLses. But in one part of your video I saw that the extreme corner are very soft, not to say unsharp. Therefore I will stay with my beloved Sigma 14-24mm 2,8, which is a great lens.
I have the 9mm f5.6 and hate the lack of electronic contacts and wonky field curvature. This looks like an attractive upgrade
I assume you use APS-C. This lens would be a total waste then, better get Sigma 10-18 2.8.
No he doesn't, He said f/5.6. That's the full frame one. APS-C one is f/2.8. Do your research@@fotografalexandernikolis

Nice video as always, though you went a bit ham on the colored lights no?
Very Cool . . . . thanks for the review.
I love this lens. amazing lens. i wish i had this one :)
can you review the zeiss touit line? the 32mm is very nice with the new firmware
Man i wish there was a similar lens for apsc.

Hi Arthur - would love to see how it does with an APS-C body and some star fields !?
Well screenshot the sample images in the video and crop in 2/3 the length of each side, then you have the APS-C crop. Other than the crop there's nothing really special about putting an APS-C sensor behind the lens.
very tempting
I wish you could copare this to a gopro. I wanna use one of these lenses whiele on my trampoline.
Witch si the best Ultra wide angle FF lens for real estate Photography? I have the a7c + 20mm f1.8
looks good 🙂
Hi Arthur, does this lens have a smooth aperture change when shooting video in shutter priority mode?
I wonder if they make that for the nikon fx.
Only 799$ 😢
It’s GOLD!

I prefer their 15mm f/2, but this lens seems like it would do just as well
Wonder if it would work for nights ape astros.
I think it’s nuts. I don’t know what I’d use it for.
Did you try the lens for vertical video? I am curious if it could be used to crop to 5x4 vertical and show a semi wide view for reels.
OT, but I shoot anamorphic for multi use videos
Maybe tm might post laowa 10mm vs sony 11mm on a6700. Hehe
Anyone have the AF version of this lens for Nikon Z? Are you able remove the hood? If it's removable I can't figure it out.. thanks!
oops i got it, it was on there tight !
Are you related to Hoovies Garage?
My thought: if they can make this lens, I’d love to see a compact 20mm.
check Viltrox 20mm f2.8
I would love to see this against the 9mm Brightin-Star which only has MF but as cheap as it gets and suberb image quality for the money.
And hard to find, because of a very limited distribution network.
Major reason why I chose another lens.
ND, CPL, GR N.D 필터는 어떻게 장착할까요?.🤔
Laowa = old frog in Chinese :-D Pretty impressive lens.
btw: Autofocus just supported on Nikon / Sony mount. Canon mount is manual focus (Canon is said to be very protective towards 3rd party usage of their mount)
they are "not said" but they are incredibly restrictive in opening the mount because people would stop buying overpriced canon RG glass
You use APSC lenses, how do you figure this would do on a full frame like A7IV?
He is using it on FF in this video. You have the results here already.
This is a FF lens tho
full frame gopro

The 9mm has a ton of chromatic aberration, not super sharp either... it seems to have improved on this one.
I didn't know hoovies garage was doing camera reviews
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
wonder why gopro isnt using zero-d lenses, cant be that expensive
New idea new fun 😔
I'll keep my Laowa 12 and Laowa 10-18. Never need AF with this length.

the lens looks cool ,but its waaaay too wide!!
... for you.
And perfect for others, with other needs and points of interest. The ones who shall buy it.
Bokeh doesn't rhyme with okay
bo like in Bose, keh like in Kevlar
Good lens but too wide for 98% of normal videos
"This tool is nice but not useful for everything" ok who cares? Niche tools exist for various reasons.
If you think this lens is for normal video you would be wrong. This is for real estate photography and video. That's the point.
How did vertical stripe in RUclips sets become a thing??? They really don't work.... Just saying...
The close focus ones looks horrible...

tbf it is pretty much the first of its kind
