  • Part 1 of 2 videos detailing my experiences over several months living with the Philips Hue Lighting system in my condo.

    Candalabra socket adapter: geni.us/socketa...
    Similar spot light lamp (can't find original): amzn.to/1P5EZKf
    Outfitting your entire house or apartment with Hue lights is not cheap, but I think its worth it in the end.
    You can cut your lighting bill to less than half, so the payback (depending on how many bulbs you need) can occur within a year or two, and the lights are rated to last between 14-18 years, depending on the type of bulb.
    In part 2 ( • Living With an Entire ... ) I review a few of the better apps available to control the lights, and show a few of the cool things you can do with them.
    Hope this answers some people's questions, but please leave a comment if not.

    *I like the old style Echo Dot because it's small also **Newest.Technology**, gives out decent sound and doesn't take up a lot of shelf space if you want to put it on beam in the workshop or shed.*

    like the features, setup was difficult for some of my devices (August Door lock, ruclips.net/user/postUgkxhB5YOMNj04GuoAosExygP4cH-dKeb4aB Bose speaker)... but all switches and outlets (5), thermostat, tankless water heater. Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....

    For anybody wondering. The reason those dimmer switches do not work with those bulbs is because incandescent dimmer switches work by changing the voltage sent to the bulb while LED's are the same brightness no matter what. LED's can be dimmed in two (I think theres only two) ways. One being Pulse-width-modulation and the other is by changing the current. Changing the current is sorta like changing the voltage but different. If you want to know more about that, you can google it. That would be the analog way. The digital way is programmed in and relies on tricking the human eye.

      +flagpoleeip all i have to say is you can get a slightly dumbed down version of these bulbs made by another company on amazon and ebay for about 20-40 dollars a piece and use one remote to control them all. works way better than the crappy apps honestly. and each bulb comes with a remote so you can put remotes all over instead of having to find your phone or whatever each time you want to use it.

    • @Autunite

      The HUE LED strips are different though, they include a RGB 5050 LED chip with two smaller warm white and cold white LED chips. This is perfect for daily natural light and RGB moodlight. A 5050 LED chip will struggle to create a natural warm or cold white light by itself.
      Been using eBay LED strips for a long time, but been thinking of upgrading to a genuine HUE system because of the light quality.
      EDIT: Light quality approved, bought several Hue LED strips and bulbs for the house, will never return to eBay LEDs anymore. I'm addicted to this. Help.

    For your dimmer switch you can mark on the slider and the dimmer at the no buzzing and no flicker point i.e the ideal spot. and you can always line it up and you know not to go past it downwards to prevent flicker.

    For a cheaper strips alternative use the FLS-PP lp balast along with whatever RGB(W) strips you want. Also for lights that you don't care about color but just want control consider the lux bulbs or GE Link bulbs which are way cheaper!

  • @jake17124
    @jake17124 7 лет назад +19

    I literally built my entire house with normal bulbs retrofitted with my own circuit board that connects to my phone with wifi, plus I added PWM control on the circuit board so that I can dim LED's, the reason why yours doesn't dim is, just like you said, less voltage. That dimmer is meant for incandescent bulbs at it increases/lowers the voltage to increase/decrease glow, if you unscrew your dimmer switch you can actually make a tiny board in which you can allow your regular dimmers to control the LEDs with PWM. My entire system costed me about 150 - 200 bucks, no color control though, you can add that if you buy RGB LED's. It's been running smooth for a year straight, no prob.s I'm 17 but I know a lot in electronics xD.

    Reason the bulbs flicker on low dimmer setting is that you need an led driver and a trailing edge dimmer switch. With these in place you would get more brightness and a safer dim with no flickering,also trailing edge dimmer switches feature safe start,this means they will dim up when first switched on to protect the led.
    Anyone spending the cash on changing there home lighting should also invest in the right drivers for the lights and the right switches.

    • @techfreshness
      @techfreshness  8 лет назад +1

      +Jonny R oh man thanks for the info jonny, i had no idea. the drivers are built into the bulbs though right, so no choice there?

    • @JonnyR8Ball
      @JonnyR8Ball 8 лет назад

      +techfreshness No worries man. No buddy the driver is in line on the power and earth cables running to the light fixture. This allocates how much power is sent to the bulb.
      The trailing edge switches regulate this for the bulbs to dim properly and ramp up when switched on

    • @techfreshness
      @techfreshness  8 лет назад

      ah ok so that driver is soemthing that needs to be replaced? or just getting a trailing edge dimmer is enough?

    • @JonnyR8Ball
      @JonnyR8Ball 8 лет назад

      +techfreshness trailing edge dimmer might be enough I'd try it and see but If it still pulses then you'll need a driver.

    • @techfreshness
      @techfreshness  6 лет назад

      ha fair enough. although to me the comparison is vs incandescant, since i don't like regular led bulbs. so if i cna't do color changing and remote control then i'd just rather have incandescent

    • @aaul7632
      @aaul7632 6 лет назад +1

      My comment below can be read as offensive if you don't actually care about saving money or being correct in your videos. Please ignore if you'd rather not have commenters check your math.
      You shouldn't be comparing to incandescent bulbs because you wouldn't ever want to get incandescent bulbs over regular LEDs:
      1. LEDs have lower electricity usage: ~10W vs ~60W (lower is better)
      2. LED has way more bulb life: 25000 hrs vs 1200 hrs
      3. LED lights have more choices of color temperature + brightness
      4. cost per bulb is basically even nowadays. LED light bulbs are

    • @techfreshness
      @techfreshness  6 лет назад

      no i get whate you are saying totally. however, for me specifically i used all incandescent so the savings to me is actually that delta.but yeah if someone was really trying to look to save money then they would be comparing vs some other led's so thats real comparison in that scenario

  • @trlalli92
    @trlalli92 8 лет назад

    If you leave the light switches on all the time, power is still going to them because the circuit is complete. So I wonder if it still uses power even though you have the bulbs turned off from the app, or if power is only consumed when the bulbs are on. Hmmm. Probably a question for Phillips. Thanks for the vid

    So basically you spent $1060 on light bulbs which save your landlord money and hum loudly if you don't have your dimmer switch set just right? I'm sold on LED lighting in general esp if you pay for electricity, but I don't see the value in a whole home HUE set. Maybe a couple in particular places, then some cheaper smart bulb alternatives throughout.

    • @techfreshness
      @techfreshness  8 лет назад

      +Greg Oughton yeh i mean i can't argue with you really cuz you right, but i plan on taking them with me as i'm moving soon. and i've switched out the dimmers with rockers, they weren't supposed to work with them. i guess the value for me is the convenience of controlling it with echo and being able to change colors and stuff

There are some that are closed but they do not compare to these! I only recommend these if you have the money and watch her house to look nice and they are super cool especially with all the apps

      Its not like you think it is. You have a different packages with the electric company and you select one that will suit you the most and you pay a fix monthly bill. When you rent usually the owners have already selected electricity package and they will include it into your rent. But if you spend more electricity then your you're paying for, they you will have to pay really a lot.
      It usually happens when owners what to make the rent "cheap" and will select a crappy electricity package that you will probably cross and end up paying more.

    First of all I LOVE your ceiling, rustic concrete looks amazing . About the problem with your dim switches, I got some LED light bulbs and some didn't work with my dim switches, some of them the cheaper ones said they were dim-able but they caused the problem you have, they would blink when the dim was at the low position or they would make some noise, I found out that the problem was the light bulbs they were not dim-able, so if you can control the amount of light from an app I would suggest you use the app to do that. I will try the lights in one room and see how it goes.

      yep, after you pay for a whole new set to replace them so your land Lord doesnt charge you, accept you've lost possibly several years of energy savings and hope that your new place also has for example four kitchen bulbs etc.
      if you find yourself failing to use one bulb your out 70 bucks.
      i mean if he decides that three bulb lamp in his living room is not in fact a lamp he wants twelve years from now he has to figure out where to put an extra bulb or two or limit his purchases to three bulb fixtures or spend more money getting two or three fixtures just to justify his bulb purchase.
      look maybe he really likes light bulbs. maybe he one thousand dollars likes light bulbs and that's fine but let's not pretend this is a rational purchase.
      you use ten year bulbs in a ten year fixture.
      you got a chandelier high up in your house, sure, put a ten year bulb in.
      you got a lamp in your apartment. I mean he has two hundred dollars worth of bulb in a fifty dollar fixture

      +dinorail123 The upfront cost is scary, I agree. But over time these bulbs are of great value. They are easily amortized over a decade and reduce your electricity consumption overall. In addition, although subjective, the ambiance created in your home has positive effects on your mood.

    Smart choice man just in terms of cost they are about the same as normal bulbs (colored hues compared to white light bulbs otherwise 4x cheaper over time for white hues) because the normal ones have about 70 times less lifetime. plus they cost from 5 to 15 times less in electricity wich helps a lot in the summer when you have to put draw out all that heat with a/c.
