The steep downhill can be a bit problematic in the SG5's. That soft material tends to stretch and you feel your foot move while you're going down steep hills/mountains. I also noticed that short tongue on the speedgoat's pushes down and you can tend to start to feel the laces on your foot. The tongue is probably my biggest gripe with that shoe.

My impressions, so far. I think the Tecton is has a softer step in feel, but "slaps" more in stride so feels a bit more firm then, although it is only slightly more rigid than the speedgoat and maybe even less rigid laterally. The Tecton seems to fit my foot better, I can get a good lock down and have decent room in the toebox. I have the wides for speedgoat and can't get as secure a fit, and it still seems to pinch my toes more. The Speedgoat does however have a softer upper, the Tecton is similar to upper from the EVO Speedgoat. Grip seems about the same, although with 100 miles on the Speedgoat they are already worn down enough to make the Tecton's at least look more grippy. As of now, I am starting with the Tecton for my upcoming 100 miler this weekend.

Appreciate the comparison with the Evo for the upper. Evo upper is awesome (imho)

Having done a trail race with lots of incline/decline in the SG5, I can safely say it’s a terrific trail shoe, and can even do light duty on roads. Everything you said about the easy plodding is what I experienced going uphill, and the pointed heel didn’t bother my Achilles at all when careening downhill. It wasn’t unusually technical, but some of it was fast narrow heavily cambered mountain bike paths and I had no stability issues at all. I will say it doesn’t feel “special”, but late into a race when you’re exhausted, I’d rather a shoe disappear than stand out and be distracting. No blisters or hot spots, and the only thing I didn’t love was the amount of dirt and dust that I got in the shoe, but I have very narrow ankles so even the narrow collar shape couldn’t save me completely.

Spot on Kiran. I have both and agree with your analysis. Tecton X is a 1/2 marathon or less faster effort shoe. The SG5 is a very comfortable longer/easier effort option. Both might not be the best option for technical terrain.

Loving the feel of the Tecton X, light and fast for a trail shoe. I've only raced a half but I did get a park run PB in these too! (I'm sure they were designed for more than that!). I will try to take them on a 50k at some point, I think they will be ok ...but for day after day like you're planning comfort and durability have got to be king!

I have them both in my large rotation. Agree with you on all points. My only issue so far is the lugs are wearing quickly on the 5’s I haven’t ran much in the Tecton but presume they will be the same. The trails are bone dry which will add to the wear.

Surely looks good to both, but I just recently got the SG5's and don't have a need for the Tecton X. Great Review as well

Hoka should make a road version of the Tecton X as its much better on the road than the carbon x. The Tecton is a great shoe. Really comfortable, fast and a joy to run in.

    Good review - thanx!
What I am (still) curious about is how you experienced the different rocker location (early for the 5, later for the Tecton). Did it make a difference in the running, or was it just something you noted?.

Did the 45 mile south west traverse in the tecton x, brilliant shoe and did well but towards the end I did feel that perhaps the speedgoat would have been the better choice for that extra comfort.
The tongue however is coming away from the top rubber bit, so I've had to glue it back in place.
I have the 65 mile rat run in 4 weeks time, I'm still tied between sg4 or tecton x.

Do give an update then Darren! Currently have the SG4, am cons=sidering the Tecton as a purchase. Running trails between HM and 80k distance.

I am running a SG4 and I love this shoe. My girlfriend also but she bought a SG5 and she told me it’s not a couch anymore like the SG4. Can someone explain the feeling of the new Tectron X in comparison with the SG4? I love the softness and the good responsiveness with the SG4. On a slight incline it is like being on rails and i love it.

How about between the Speedgoat 5 or the Torrent 2? Which do you prefer?

Quick question for you. I am running UTMB next month and still (still!) haven't chosen my shoes. I have a lot going on in my shoe rotation and am looking for comfort overall given the trail isn't technical but very long.
Would you go for SG5 or Tekton or something completely different?
I was considering the NB more foam v2 which I love but the damn heel counter destroys the achilles to the point I acrually chopped it out with a scalpel!!
All views appreciated as there is precious little out there on RUclips for 100+ mile runs.

How would the Saucony Endorphin Edge compare with these Hoka offerings?

    thank you.
For an old man running on trails for about 7hours, tecton x will stress more the knees than speedgoat?
I would love the tecton x advantage ...
    Thank you.

So where does the torrent 2 sit in comparison >

Good question. Much, much firmer than either of these.

It’s like a lightweight version of the speedgoat. I have some and tend to use them as ‘race’ trail shoes whereas I use my speedgoats (4 not 5 mind) for training. Both great shoes in my opinion.

If it is your first trail shoe - don't spend €200 quit on them. Go with the SG5.
