    After installing an after market head unit in my BMW Z4, I decided to add an aftermarket camera so that I could have automatic reverse camera functionality on a car that didn't come with a screen. Since this car didn't have a factory screen, I had to install the android head unit and then run a wire to the rear bumper through a relay in order to get this functionality. Cameras that are compatible with this are analog and usually not HD, but the quality is good enough to see where you are backing up to. There are a few ways you can install a backup camera, you can do a wireless reverse camera, but those come with their own issues. You can also get an MMI controller that will connect to your factory system, but those can get pricey and of course you can do what I did and run a wire from the trunk to the front and connect it using a physical connection. It's a little bit of work, but I show you each step of the way.

    I really like the way you're turning your z4 into a more modern car. The e89 z4 still looks extremely good by today's standards so adding these updated technologies really makes this car look new

    Andriy, another great video. I love how you always minimize the amount of "dismounting" of panels needed in order to run the wiring! One recommendation for those like me who have an automatic transmission and are installing a rear camera and connecting it to that Android head unit: My understanding is that you do NOT need to connect the two wires to the rear reverse lights, and therefore you do NOT need to buy/install a relay; simply tape up the two wires without connecting. Somewhere in that bundle that is connected to/from the Android head unit, the signal for reverse is sent and the rear camera will be activated. Simply run the pair of wires that you ran from trunk to the head unit; that's it.

      Hi Mil! Thanks for letting me and everyone know! I hope someone that has an auto can test it out and let us know. I would think that both haver the same signal sent via CANBUS when the car is in reverse (like it knows to lower the passenger side mirror), but who know!

      @@SimpleCarGuy Andriy, One additional suggestion is to silicon seal your new license plate light and then insert it into the bumper slot. On my Kia Optima SX, a common problem was rear camera failure. Even though the camera was incredibly sealed, when I took it apart you could see the white salt dust absolutely coating the electronics! Kia upgraded the camera subsequently, and I added a black silicone (my car is black) when placing the new camera into its slot.

    A great vid. as always, thank you. Just one question, does the original Z4 wiring include a cable for the reverse camera? if I am not mistaken you have installed the Apple retrofit before carrying out this job, so I am not sure how the original wiring system is. Thanks for your response.

      Not sure easy, but can be done if you think about it one step at a time! Realistically, it's not easy on any semi modern car unless it already has the wires there.

    Andriy, this is a great video as always. I've been recently thinking about doing an android update and reverse camera install and this video was a great help in understanding how much work it might involve. This content will come in handy for sure when I do it but at the moment I need to resolve an issue that's been a PITA for a while.
    My car (2011 Z4 SDrive 30i with N52 Auto) has a battery drain which is not consistent, as in sometimes car can be parked for 2 weeks and everything's fine but other times within a couple days parked, battery will die (almost down to 4 volts or even lower sometimes). Have you ever heard of anyone experiencing such issue? I've ruled out a short in the wiring since the drain is not consistent, so I have a suspicion that may be any circuit or any module when triggered after power down, isn't able to go to sleep sometimes and other times everything works as expected. I have replaced alternator (the original had a bad rectifier circuit although it was charging fine) and I have a 1.5yr old battery so they aren't the culprit. Just trying to gather suggestions for when I start diagnosing it in spring.

    Do you really need the reverse camera? E89 is the simplest of my cars to back park. In my opinion it needs front camera :)) because all what I still feel a little uneasy to do is park in front with out to hurt my bumper :) I have another engine (n54) but do you ever have problem with unstable engine operation at cold (at idle)? I had change sparks, injectors, ignition coils, air recirculation tubes in idle. There are no one erros. There are 2-8 missfire in few cylinders for about one houer of work. How do you think what I have to check next?

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy  2 года назад +1

      You are definitely right about the Z4 not needing a camera. I did it just to do it and to have it a little more modern. Front camera is also a good idea and I think this unit supports it. Would have to double check.
      As far as your N54, I had that engine in my 335i back in the day and I've never had those issues. Looks like you've already done the main items that could be causing this. It could also be HPFP starting to go bad, especially if you have any kind of hesitation on hard acceleration.

    • @666deagle50
      @666deagle50 2 года назад +1

      Sergey, I can't say specifically for N54 since my car has the N52, but I have another car which has a 4 cyl DI Turbo engine (78 k miles) and I have rough idle at cold starts and slight rough idle after engine warms up fully. No codes whatsoever, fuel trims are fine and I've taken care of all engine related services myself at regular intervals. The engine does well under acceleration, and the roughness is only felt during idle or when I am coming to a sudden stop during the transition from rolling to completely stationary idle. My problem is most likely due to carbon buildup on the back of intake valves which is a very common problem for DI engines as the fuel goes directly inside the cylinder and never gets a chance to wash the back of intake valves like PFI engines. Due to this, the valves aren't able to seat properly and there is some leakage which can cause poor combustion and also changes the constituents of the mixture that goes into the cylinders so the factory calibration isn't able to account for that as it doesn't know what happening. Again, I can't say if you are experiencing same problem since I don't know how many miles you have on the engine or whether N54 has other nuances that could cause your problem as miles accumulate.

      @SergeySemenovS 2 года назад

      @@666deagle50 My problem is very similar to the one you described! How do you think ignoring of this problem with carbon buildup on the back of intake valves can lead to serious damage?

    • @SergeySemenovS
      @SergeySemenovS 2 года назад

      @@SimpleCarGuy Yes, I already thought about HPFP. Looks like it's next for diagnosis and replacement :)

    • @666deagle50
      @666deagle50 2 года назад

      @@SergeySemenovS Sorry for late reply. It won't cause any serious damage but if that's something your engine might be struggling with, then the problem generally grows with mileage and eventually you'll need to get it cleaned. Unfortunately there is no easy or permanent solution for this. There are only two options really, either you pay a shop to do Walnut blasting or you remove everything to reach the intake valves yourself in the runners and clean them using cleaners that you can buy off the shelf. It sucks that DI engines have this flaw and you can't really do much about it with preventive maintenance. But if you also have any hesitation in power at high loads/speeds, then your problem might be something else. Before you do any more expensive replacements, I would say get a good OBD reader that will show you real time data or let you record data and have someone sit with you in the car or drive the car while you look at the data. You wanna pay attention to your Fuel trims and make sure they aren't too high and also look at your O2 sensor voltages to see they aren't going too lean or too rich when you feel the hesitation. At the simplest level, a hesitation is either due to over lean or over rich mixture or inadequate spark and atleast looking at the fuel trims/O2 sensor stuff might give you some idea on how's your fuel system behaving.

    as per the manual from the camera you dont need the relay 12v and ground if you have a 12 volt from your head unit. the cable that carries the video feed and the red pig tail include the ground. when your car goes into reverse it send 12v down the line and down steps to 3.5 volts which turns the camera on.
